Posted October 29, 201212 yr http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/...stmas-No-1.html An all-star charity single to raise funds for Hillsborough families will take on the X Factor for Christmas No 1. Robbie Williams, Mel C, Rebecca Ferguson and Paloma Faith are among the stars who have come together to cover The Hollies' 1969 hit 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother.' All money raised from the single will go towards paying the legal costs of families of the 96 Liverpool fans who died in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster. === http://tellymix.co.uk/reality-tv/the-x-fac...r-xmas-no1.html A charity single for the victims of the Hillsborough disaster will be competing against The X Factor for this year’s Christmas number one. However, like last year, this year’s dates actually mean that The X Factor won’t be going for the Christmas number one. With The X Factor final on Sunday, December 9, the winner’s single will instead by charting the week before the Christmas chart, like Little Mix last year. The Sun reports that stars including Robbie Williams, The Clash’s Mick Jones, Paloma Faith and Spice Girl Mel C are recording a cover of The Hollies’ song He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother. The track will be released on December 17, with all money raised going towards the families’ legal costs. Meanwhile, a separate facebook campaign is urging fans not to buy this year’s winners single and instead opt to to buy Fairytale of New York. Last year’s winners Little Mix soared to number one with their cover of Damien Rice’s Cannonball. === I hate that Hollies song, its already been #1 on the back of a tv ad... miller-lite.
October 29, 201212 yr Interesting that Rebecca Ferguson is going against the X Factor for a Christmas #1!
October 29, 201212 yr Oh god, it's becoming a bunfight like the old days. I give it one more year until big acts start releasing singles on Christmas week again because the #1 is actually achievable. It would be hilarious if GaGa or Adele released something that went straight to the top that week.
October 29, 201212 yr I'd rather the Fairytale of New York campaign to succeed. This Hillsborough "charity" single isn't even for charity - it's compensation basically. I don't see how money is going to make the victim's family feel better.
October 29, 201212 yr The Hollies was no.1 the day I was born, also the acts involved and the cause seem decent. XF is crap this year so I'll back this all the way. But it would be nice if other artists could make an effort like in the old days.
October 29, 201212 yr Obviously this charity single is for a good cause and the Hillsborough disaster was terrible, but they could have chose a more interesting song to cover. Obviously the campaign to get FONY won't challenge the top spot, it'll be top 20 again like it is every year I think (it's unbelievable how it keeps selling, surely by now everyone has this song in some form!) I miss the days when the Christmas battle for #1 was actually a battle instead of a predictable landslide. Since 2004, when Band Aid 20 was out, the Xmas #1 has been very predictable - except for 2009 of course, who could forget about THAT chart battle! Everyone used to complain about X Factor getting Xmas #1 year in year out, it looks like now some random charity single is going to do it. Why can't someone like Adele or Rihanna release an original Christmas song? Last year we got a Bieber Christmas album and single, but obviously I didn't like that :P Rant Over.

People who have downloaded it probably delete it off their iPods or whatever once Christmas is over, and then get it again next Christmas. I'd prefer an original Christmas song to reach number one, or at least do really well (Coldplay's Christmas Lights and Justin Bieber's Mistletoe have been the most recent one, but have only had moderate success, although I bet the latter will re-enter somewhere each year.)
October 29, 201212 yr No way will it be X-Factor, Little Mix only sold something like 114k first week last year and this series has even less viewers! They'll very probably get #1 in their release week but I think the Hillsborough song stands a very good chance of Xmas #1, haven't heard it yet so I won't judge but usually I don't like these random charity songs, but at least it's not a stupid malicious FB campaign to get any old crap to #1 just because someone doesn't like X-Factor.
October 29, 201212 yr Author We also got 2 more charity tracks yet to come, CIN, X Factor charity single, and now this, 3 charity singles in 2 months, they could have done the X Factor charity single and donated those proceeds to the Hillsborough cause. The thing is, I really hate that Hollies track, its already been #1, they could have chose a better track. Out of all the old tracks they had to choose a bloody Hollies cover, surely there are some decent old tracks to cover and give an old track a new lease of life that hasn't gone to #1 yet. Also there probably be more charity singles during the month of Dec, with that Santa telethon they had last year with the Stars of Towie, mind you that did jack shit. Rant over.
October 29, 201212 yr No way will it be X-Factor, Little Mix only sold something like 114k first week last year and this series has even less viewers! If Ella doesn't win, I wouldn't be surprised to see the X Factor winner sold less than 100k in its second week.

The thing is, I really hate that Hollies track, its already been #1, they could have chose a better track. The difference being that the CIN song (Something New by GA) is not a kareoke cover version. We don't know what the X Factor single is but I wouldn't be surprised if they covered Emeli Sande and called it Read All About It, Pt. IV

October 29, 201212 yr X-Factor is miles better, than that shit, which was # 1 on Christmas week in 2009. I lost all my fate in UK charts after it. Edited October 29, 201212 yr by AlexRange
October 29, 201212 yr I dont see how this will be a chart battle - as with last year the Charity single will top the charts I wonder if after 7 (ish) consecutive years of Charity singles going top in the future that a campaign to get Rage Against the Machine to go christmas number 1 will be in the works again... worked to stop the consectutive XMas Number 1s of the XF...

X-Factor is miles better, than that shit, which was # 1 on Christmas week in 2009. I lost all my fate in UK charts after it. I personally loved that the RATM campaign promoted '90s rap metal, it's a sorely misunderstood genre. Therefore I'm backing this for Christmas #1: ZpUYjpKg9KY
October 29, 201212 yr Author Why couldn't they just re-recorded Fairytale of New York, that I wouldn't have minded. I grab my coat now. "leaves thread"
October 29, 201212 yr 114k was its second week, it did 210k in its first week. Oh right, I do think 200k is probably a bit much to ask this year for sure though.
October 29, 201212 yr People who have downloaded it probably delete it off their iPods or whatever once Christmas is over, and then get it again next Christmas. I don't - and I'll even listen to FOTNY in mid-summer... :)
