Well not quite. Cruz is a disgusting almost-theocrat, but if nothing else he wasn't running on a platform of open racism that has people fearing for their lives.

His racism may not be as open as Trump's but he's still as anti-Muslim as Trump is if not moreso. And he's literally said that the USA should 'carpet bomb' Iraq and Syria so I'd say that's causing people to fear for their lives too. He's every bit as dangerous, and his air of 'legitimacy' (what with being a Senator and not just a reality TV buffoon) would make it more likely that these dangerous policies would actually go through. Trump's rhetoric is worse but an actual Cruz presidency would be just as bad on that front. Add onto that the horrific leanings toward theocracy (he actually supports this ridiculous North Carolina trans bathroom law!) and I'd take Trump over Cruz any day. Though that's a choice between the two most repugnant candidates of this year by far. Very depressing that they were the last two standing (ignoring Kasich as he's pretty much irrelevant).

Fully expecting to see Trump pivot massively towards the centre (or even the 'left' based on some of the things he's said in the past!) now he has the nomination locked up anyway.
If I see one more Huffington Post article posted in here I might go absolutely crazy. I know there are news channels or papers that are biased towards a certain candidate, but Huffpost is BY FAR the most biased thing I've ever seen, both in America's media AND our own media.

It will be interesting to see what impact Trump's inevitable pivot, some might say 180 degree turn, will have for his supporters. I mean largely the bluster is fine, but what happens when the bluster turns out to be as hollow and stinking of BS as everyone with sense knew all along? Surely (I know that word probably implies they WON'T), but SURELY they won't accept a radical pivot towards being electable and being more of a standard politician from him THAT easily when it's essentially been all that stuff he's built his support on.

Also it's going to raise some interesting problems for the Clinton campaign going forward too, his being a sexist, misogynistic, racist fucktard isn't really something that needs to be pointed out, but a scorched earth campaign (which I fear she will go for) has just as much chance to backfire as win it for her.

Pivots are vastly overrated in the internet age. Romney's etch-a-sketch didn't work out too well, with far less offensive comments.
No real surprise there given Cruz is gone and he was much, much closer to winning (but also still destined to fail, obv)

Well done America. Real prize you've got there.

At least common sense will prevail and Clinton will saunter into the white house.

Bitch, she's already losing in head to head match ups and he can start the general NOW. She has to lose 10-14 more states to Bernie first who like a petulent child, taking after some of his supporters, will contest contest and then still not back her, splitting the Dem vote or forcing himself as candidate.

Umm, literally ONE poll had Trump beating her since OCTOBER. ONE. Singular. And even then it was only by 2 points, so within the 3 point margin of error AND it had a 20% 'don't know/undecided' rate.

That's not to say I'm not worried that they could f*** this up still, but let's not even remotely pretend at this stage she isn't massively favoured to win (around 75% odds to win, versus 23% for Trump as of yesterday). Plus Bernie can contest whatever he likes, it doesn't mean anything is going to change. As Tirren pointed out already she will have won in EVERY SINGLE way. There's literally no way to spin it into a win at all.

Bitch, she's already losing in head to head match ups and he can start the general NOW.

Every single poll conducted matching up Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump has found her in the lead, typically by around ten points - with the exception of one, conducted by Rasmussen, who are the only pollsters who find them even close. Rasmussen were also the only pollsters who consistently had Romney beating Obama in 2012. Do the maths.

Also, starting the general several months early didn't really help John McCain in 2008. Ultimately, if your message is unappealing to people, it doesn't matter how much time or money you've got to give it. Given a majority of Americans view Trump very unfavourably and two-thirds view him unfavourably, it's safe to say they don't like what he's selling.

Bernie won't run as an independent because he knows it would only let the Republican win. He has said as much every single time he's been asked. There's no reason to think he would change his mind when he is on the record saying it would be suicidal for him to campaign as an independent.

Tweet from Donald ‘Of course it’s not Wig’ Trump

Bernie Sanders has been treated terribly by the Democrats—both with delegates & otherwise. He should show them, & run as an Independent.

Donald doing what it was thought he'd do and saying the UK would be better off out of Europe.

A fabulous endorsement. The Brexit movement is backed by countless honest and inspirational figures. Undecided voters will relate to them in every possible way!

Coming from a msogynist billionaire racist who spews hate and venom in every sentence, I think we can all say we would have been utterly shocked if he didn't. Nothing to do with his property interests in the Great Britain (as he calls us) of course, and hoping for more Right-Wing rich-friendly legislation. NO, purely an unbiased assessment of all the evidence that he's been weighing up heavily over the last 6 months in his spare time, heaven knows he's had loads of down-time to investigate the issues, not as if he's been busy doing something else lately...

Oh fantastic. Hopefully a good bunch of undecided people will see that and for "Remain" for that very reason.

(Shouldn't we be discussing in the EU Referendum thread?)

Talk seems to be turning in the US press now as to who will be the two running mates. Front-runner for Hillary's pick for VP is still Julian Castro but Elizabeth Warren's been mentioned a lot. I think she'll go with a younger (50's) male. There's even been talk of Bill! According to the rules he couldn't be ELECTED president again but could he assume the Presidency from position of VP? Can't see her choosing him anyway.

As for Donald, will anyone actually want to run with him? I think he should pick a woman. Condoleeza Rice would be good but she's supposed to have left politics.

Thoughts, suggestions?

I've seen quite a few people (seriously) suggesting Caitlyn Jenner as a potential running mate for Trump. Given that she's a Republican, and is apparently a close friend of Trump, it's not beyond the pale, although it might end up getting a bit South Park-esque for many people's likings. I've also seen fellow billionaire businessman Mark Cuban being touted as a possible running mate if he decides to go for the non-politician route. If he goes for a politician, if he gets Nikki Haley to run with him he'll have the presidency wrapped up.

As for Hilary, there's no way she'll get Bill as his running mate. He's going to be her greatest liability in the run-up to the election, so don't expect to see much of him in the coming months.
