Scream & Shout keeps getting used on Big Brother so that must be helping it a bit as well. Im sure it will get another boost on Friday's final to start the weekend effect.

I wouldn't say it's "number 1 by default", really. It wasn't number 1 in the mid weeks at all last week, so fought back and managed to grab it officially, despite strong competition from 50 Cent and Justin Timberlake. That's not by "default". Default would have been, where they had no competition and easily scored the number 1 on relatively low sales (40k or something), imo.

It's been losing sales every week since the end of December and the momentum seems to be slowing down. Scream And Shout only went to #1 in the first place because of a lack of new releases and the weekend effect has helped the song out a lot as well. Maybe it wasn't default in the second week because of the new releases but I believe that more competition would have prevented the song going to #1 in the first place.

I'd have given "Scream & Shout" a couple more weeks... but hey! Look at "Gangnam Style" and i suppose S&S can't do anymore.

 

It'll still get a high number of plays as a recurrent, so it's not as if you'll never hear Radio 1 play it again, plus commercial radio are hammering it at the moment. Radio 1 have to move on at some point to start promoting the songs that should be big in Feb i.e Avicci, Bastille, etc......

I don't mind S&S being axed BUT obviously not "everyone" got bored of it if it's still the biggest selling song at the moment... "#1 by default" doesn't make sense, it's still the one song that most people in the country wanted to buy this week.

I am not even sure that people who bought it 4 or 3 weeks ago are already bored of it. It takes more than a month to get bored of a song you love.

Depends on what basis Radio 1 are deciding to add records to the playlist. These days they pay no regard to actual popularity of a record (compare the Top 40 best sellers - and that means most popular - with Radio One's playlist week after week). If they were actually in touch with their target audience of 15 to 30 year-olds, who buy most of the tracks in the singles chart, then presumably the records they plug (and no-one else plugs) week-in-week-out would sell and chart. I havent seen the stats but I'd be interested to see the hit rate of non-fanbase-playlisted tracks....

 

This policy is completely political, imposed on radio One by the governors, who are still insultingly trying to stop people like me (over 30) listening to Radio One by removing all trace of music and dj's that are much over 30 (which by the way isn't working, the average listener age has gone UP, and I will never stop listening to radio One unless they start targeting foetuses to 10-year-olds as its new policy). Radio One has always been youth-oriented from day one, but it's never taken this extreme "Logan's Run" stance before.

If the #1 were something less "relevant" everyone would be relieved when it got taken off.

 

And if anything the fact that it "fought back" to make #1 makes it there by default moreso than otherwise - the new releases tailed off so it was all that was left.

I should just point out that just because a song is no longer playlisted on Radio 1, that doesn't mean that IT WILL NO LONGER BY PLAYED AT ALL. I fully expect Scream and Shout to still be played extensively on the station regardless, even more than some of the tracks that are on the playlist.

Because that's what Radio 1 should mainly be for, playing the currently successful pop songs. And yes, they should have playlisted "Candy" under the same principles.

 

If they want to drop it from the playlist when it drops down the chart, fair enough, but I stand by my earlier statement that the playlist should always include the number one single.

Not *is*, *Should be". It's the primary national pop station, and the only one where we don't have to suffer tons of adverts.

Radio 1 continually advertise as being 'In new music we trust' thats what makes it different to capital. They introduce new pop stars that other stations wouldnt take a risk on.

 

They also have a mix of established artists and sucessful songs too thats why they get 10 million listeners a week!

I get that they are there to promote new music and need to drop songs so that new songs can come through etc, I just think it's odd that they droppped the Britney song in the week it is no. 1. It doesn't happen very often (if ever) that they drop the no 1 song from the A-List
