Considering how fantastic the EP pre-orders were for Duke Dumont, 39k is quite disappointing. An end of week total of 100k (+/- 5k) is still nothing to scoff at, of course, but it should be so much better.

The Saturdays sold 52k in the first midweek update. They sold 114k in the week in total, divide 114 by 52 and it gives you a multiplier of around 2.2.

 

Duke Dumont has sold 39k. Multiply that by 2.2 and you get 85.8k for the whole week. Of course, Duke is probably not as frontloaded as the Sats, so he could sell up to 90k, but I don't think 100k is possible for him.

 

Based on that, my prediction is 85-90k for Need U. Feel free to quote me if I'm right :D

Duke Dumont won't sell 100k. I'm guessing 97k-103k by the end of the week.

I did the exact thing with PJ and Duncan's sales, which was multiplied by around 2.5 and therefore gave the the higher number of sales. :P

... right.

A pretty decent start for Duke Dumont, I must say. Not bothered about what it sells this week, just so long as it debuts at #1 - it's been a long time coming; just a shame Disclosure's "White Noise" narrowly missed out on what's become 2013: the year dance music dominated the charts.

I always find it funny how people keep saying that popular music is changing from dance music to ballad/midtempo stuff when it's obvious dance music is still more popular.

Erm, the change to ballad/midtempo stuff definitely did happen. It's just now starting to go back towards a more dancey direction (except this time it's actually PROPER dance music a la Disclosure and Duke Dumont rather than crappy club dance-pop like it was before).

2013 is the year of House. Whereas pre-Adele it was all about watered down dance-pop.

 

Btw, people need to bear in mind that Duke Dumont will not tail off anywhere near as quickly as PJ&D and The Sats. I believe there's no reason for him to lose any steam whatsoever so I still think he's going to do over 100k.

It will be interesting to see if Morrissey shows up in the singles sales flashes. He's re-released "Last of the International Playboys" on CD & vinyl, and he tends to be quite a big physical seller. Although even if he does, he'll almost definitely fall out by Sunday.

I should imagine he will get at least top 100 - 'Everyday Is Like Sunday' got to #42 on a re-release in 2010 and 'Glamorous Glue' #69 in 2011 (that one wasn't a re-release though IIRC as I don't think it was released here to begin with).

Last year's #1's consisted of Turn Up The Music, Feel The Love, Call My Name, Hot Right Now, Spectrum, Let Me Love You, Gangnam Style, Good Feeling, Domino, Sweet Nothing, Don't You Worry Child, R.I.P, How We Do, Titanium etc and there were other big dancey hits like Don't Wake Me Up, We'll Be Coming Back, Let's Go, Turn Me On, Wild Ones, I Cry, Earthquake, Last Time, Good Time, Scream, Bangarang etc

 

People like to say that the ballad/midtempo thing became popular after Adele and use a few examples to back it up (mostly Emeli Sande, Ed Sheeran, Gotye being the biggest song of the year, a few ballad hits and the fact Rihanna has released two slow songs from her album so far) but the fact is that electro/dance/house music whatever has always been more popular. David Guetta and Calvin Harris have had more hits in the last year than they did before Adele.

The re-release is not due until next Monday though.

Regardless of whether Adele was responsible for the outbreak of ballads/mid-tempos in the charts, she definitely returned at the right time. Dance-pop was dominating to the point that it was getting tedious. David Guetta is huge now but he was just as huge in 2009 and 2010. Lady GaGa was also at her biggest in those two years before Adele broke out. Then you had a ridiculous amount of pop artists releasing dance-pop (Rihanna, Alexandra Burke, Kesha, Usher to name a few). Name the last ballad that was massive (without the help of XF, the winner singles or any other TV show/advert) before Adele? It must've been a long time ago. Actually bar 'Grenade' (which came out at the same time) I can't think of any from the two years previously.

 

But once Adele broke out, there was a new found love for ballads and the public started buying into them again as well as radio was. You can dismiss the point as much as you like but Emeli, Ed and Gotye are extremely valid examples. Yes they are only a few artists and there were probably still more dance-pop artists around in 2011/2012 but no matter how few ballads there were dominating, they were always bigger than the 400k-selling dance-pop singles. Look at the last two Year-End biggest-selling singles - 'Someone Like You' and 'Somebody That I Used To Know'.

 

You've named a lot of dance-pop but you've seemed to miss out the numerous ballads/mid-tempos that have been huge over the past two years - 'Read All About It P.III', 'Wherever You Will Go', 'The Power Of Love', 'Lego House', 'The A Team', 'Someone Like You', 'Somebody That I Used To Know', 'Stay', 'Video Games', 'Best Thing I Never Had' etc.

 

Sure dance-pop is still selling but it DOMINATED from 2009-2011 and then different styles of music (fun., Gotye etc) and more balladry dominated. Now it's House's turn it seems.

 

EDIT: And to add, at what point in the past few years has House music been more popular than ballads/midtempos bar now?

Why is Morrissey promoting a re-issue of Kill Uncle be reissuing a song that isn't on it?

I don't even know what the definition of "house" is. I couldn't listen to a track and say "yes, that's a house song".

I think Duke will do between 85-95k too. Maybe even 95-100k if they got some sort of boost during the end of the week. :) It's great to see another number one with big sales again.

 

That being said, The Saturdays'record is safe and it's only fair as it's the better track from the two.
