Assuming it charts on Sunday will they play it as a new entry or skip it as a mark of respect? I can't honestly think they'll play it.

Maybe they'll do something like this...

"At #7 is a classic song from "The Wizard Of Oz" sung by Judy Garland called "Ding Dong!" but we'll play the seminal classic we all know instead... 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow'." :D

I think Radio 1 will have to play it, but I imagine, as someone said in the other thread, that there'll be a warning that the song may cause offence. If they don't play it there'll be a lot of angry texts!

Why? Do you think it should be banned in poor taste?

The most hated woman of the 20th Century dies. Unfortunately 35 years too late!

They should do, but I'm not sure how they're going to deal with this situation. Maybe they might not directly refer to it but they might say it's re-entered 'due to the highly-publicised events of last week' or something?
Maybe they'll play the first half of the song instead to keep everyone happy?

If they play it they'll be accused of poor taste, if the don't they'll be accused of censorship. Damned if they do and damned if they don't. However they aren't obliged to play anything. If there is a track with offensive lyrics and no radio edit then they won't play it. Same with this, the lyrics are offensive in the context in which the track is being bought, so I don't think they will play it.

I honestly think they SHOULD play it but personally can't see them doing so. Any complaints and they'll just use the excuse that it's "not Radio 1 type of music" If they skip it their text system will go in to meltdown though. :o

Anyone accusing Radio 1 of poor taste for playing it is a complete imbecile. The purpose of the show is to play the biggest selling singles of the week regardless of the motivation behind those sales.

They will play it but with a disclaimer about Radio 1 not endorsing the campaign.

I expect Radio 1 will play it as others have said with a disclaimer, it won't be anywhere near the most offensive thing they've played on the Top 40, that "honour" goes to the time they played "Killing In The Name" completely uncensored in 1993 by mistake!

I'd rather it was something tasteful like Costello's "Tramp The Dirt Down" charting, but alas, the British public are quite easily led it seems.

I think they'll play it and not have a chitchat about it... maybe not even announce it...

It's going to be barred from charting according to The Sun.

The Sun have reported that The Witch is Dead song which was from the Wizard of OZ soundtrack will NOT be counted in any of the official charts records come Sunday. The reasoning behind it is that they believe the sales are distasteful, and represent a political viewpoint rather than one of music, and that goes against the laws of the Official Music Chart. Also the creator of the music/song of the soundtrack will still gain all rights to money awarded from the track, and it is upto them how they spend it.

It'll be easy to avoid playing it on tomorrow's chart update because they choose the songs they play?!

Just to set everyone clear:- Channel 5 news had an interview with the showbiz editor of The Sun tonight, in relation to his views on the song. He explained that he had contacted the Official Charts Company who believed that the song didn't represent a single which was being bought in relation to musical taste but on the grounds of political views, which could cause both conflict and hurt to some listeners. The Official charts company PROHIBIT such tracks to be counted in relation to chart positions. Itunes are still allowing the song to be purchased as the song itself is not meant to cause offence in anyway, all profits of the song will go to the producer of the track. However the song will not be play listed on the Official Top 40 Chart Show on any platforms come Sunday. The public can still buy the song, and it will chart on independent charts however it will not be shown on the Official charting outlets. Radio stations are still permitted to play the song BUT not during Official Chart Countdowns.

They will play it. There will be a much bigger backlash if they don't play it than there will be if they do.

From when I listened to it, they usually play the #1 (and sometimes the #2 and #3), and all the new entries (if there's too many new entries they usually play the highest ones, if there's not enough they play re-entries, high climbers to fill up the time). Usually about 5-7 songs get played altogether in the half hour.
