Posted June 17, 201313 yr Single & Album Summary Another quiet week in the singles, Robin Thicke will probably stick around for a 4th week at #1 not going anywhere just yet his sales have been pretty good for the past few weeks, notable new single releases this week come from Jason Derulo, Dizzee Rascal/Robbie Williams, Tom Odell, London Grammar, Ke$ha/will.i.am and the Editors plus a few tracks from BBC1's reality series The Voice for Leah McFall and Mike Ward. With just a handful of album releases Kodaline are hoping to capitalise on a #1 album with their debut album "In A Perfect World". Other new albums released this week from J. June 17, 201313 yr Author Midweek Charts: Kodaline and Black Sabbath neck and neck for No 1 Source: MW by Paul Willams Kodaline are facing a close battle with Black Sabbath as they look to top the UK artist albums chart with debut In A Perfect World. The Dublin band's B-Unique/RCA release currently has a sales lead of around 14% over Vertigo/Virgin EMI act Black Sabbath'sn 13, which debuted at No 1 last Sunday. However, that lead compares to one of 30% a day ago, according to Official Charts Company data. Below them, Rod Stewart is looking to spend a fifth consecutive week in the top five with the Capitol/Decca-issued Time, which holds at 3 in the latest midweeks, while Sigur Ros's seventh album and first for XL - Kveikur - is currently showing up as a new entry at 4. It looks destined to become the Icelandic band's third Top 10 album in the UK. US hip hop star J Cole should turn up in the albums Top 10 for he first time this weekend with the Columbia/Roc Nation set Born Sinner new at 5 in the latest midweeks. His first album Cole World: The Sideline Story reached No 25 in the UK, while topping the Billboard 200 chart in the US. A fourth brand new album in the Top 10 positions comes courtesy of Hans Zimmer's Sony Classical-issued soundtrack to the new Superman movie Man Of Steel. This is new at 8 in the midweeks. Nettwerk act Passenger's All The Little Lights lifts 8-6, while Daft Punk's Columbia album Random Access Memories drops 4-7 in the week so far. Disclosure's former PMR/Island album Settle falls 5-9, while Beady Eye's Columbia-issued Be suffers a 78% week-on-week drop in sales as it drops from 2 where it debuted last Sunday to 10 and is coming under pressure from Epic act Olly Murs' Right Place Right Time for a Top 10 place. The chart lower down will welcome this Sunday new entries from Decca's Hayley Westenra, The View with their first Cooking Vinyl album and Island's Mac Miller with his second studio set Watching Movies With The Sound Off. Interscope/Polydor's Robin Thicke faces his first real competition for the No 1 spot on singles this week with only around 7,000 sales currently separating his track Blurred Lines with TI and Pharrell Williams, and Jason Derulo's new Warner Bros single The Other Side at No 2. The Derulo cut is the lead-off single from his upcoming third album. Dizzee Rascal's fifth studio album, appropriately called The Fifth, is due out in a fortnight's time and will be ushered in by another Top 10 single by the UK rapper. The Dirtee Skank/Island track Goin' Crazy, which prominently features Robbie Williams, is new at 4 in the midweks, placing it between Virgin act Naughty Boy's La La La featuring Sam Smith (dropping 2-3) and Nettwerk's Passenger with Let Her Go (down 3-5). Daft Punk's Columbia single Get Lucky with Pharrell Williams continues its slow descent, dropping 4-6 in the latest Sales Flashes, while Olly Murs' Epic-issued Dear Darlin' is down 5-7. Two other singles suffer two-position drops with Lava/Republic act Jessie J's Wild featuring Big Sean and Dizzee Rascal down 6-8 and the Mercury/Virgin EMI pairing of Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran on Everything Has Changed slipping 7-9. The Voice contestant rounds off the Top 10 in the week so far with the UMTV-issued The Voice dropping 8-10, while McFall's version of Killing Me Softly leaps 105-30. Ahead of the release of his debut album Long Way Down, Columbia's Tom Odell is heading for his highest-charting single to date with Another Love returning at 11 in the midweeks. It previously peaked at 56. Trio London Grammar, who have been compared to The xx, are new at 19 with the Metal & Dust/Ministry of Sound track Wasting My Young Years, while a soundalike version of the Icona Pop track I Don't Care I Love It races 119-20 ahead of the June 30 release of the Warner Bros original. The remake of the Swedish pop act track is billed to Remix Junkies on a label of the same name. The Def Jam/Virgin EMI set was only issued in the UK on Wednesday, but has now taken control of the week's artist albums market with a lead of around 3,000 sales over its nearest rival, according to the Official Charts Company. If it does debut at the top it will become the artist's second No 1 in the UK following Graduation in 2007. Kodaline's B-Unique/RCA debut In A Perfect World is showing up as a new entry at 2 in the midweeks with the Vertigo/Virgin EMI set 13 by Black Sabbath down to 3, having debuted at No 1 last Sunday. June 17, 201313 yr Kodaline #1 and Sigur Rós top 10 would be fabulous. Would be appropriate for Kodaline to start off with a #1 debut, as they are possible nu Coldplay and all (don't think this album will quite do as well as 'Parachutes' though). I would be confident Sigur Rós will get top 10 but seeing it stall at #11 on iTunes I think I should lower my expectations sadly...
June 18, 201313 yr Author Hold the page... Kanye West's album is out on digital, as for the album chart, I should imagine Kodaline might end up at #2 tomorrow. I can't recall any album reaching #1 on digital sales though.

I have said before that albums need to change like the singles chart has in terms of release dates - downloads should be available asap and the cd soon after so that sales arent lost to illegal downloads. Its the way forward!

Obviously, Kanye selling 40k (which I guess would be what is needed to overhaul Kodaline) on downloads alone would be a big step up from his last few albums, which opened with less even on combined sales, but I can't help but wonder if this strategy of releasing without any promotion whatsoever might counter-intuitively whip up more hype.

It will probably miss out on it now, but if it could somehow achieve it on downloads alone it would be something quite special. Will be an exciting chart either way though.
