July 24, 201312 yr Alexandra Burke - Let It Go! A pre-album single that followed a top 3 hit, but only peaked at #33.
July 24, 201312 yr Author Natalie Imbruglia's "Shiver" is one. It was #1 on the airplay chart for weeks before the single was released, and I was sure it would hit #1 on the singles chart, especially seeing how low sales were in 2005. Yeah I remember thinking the same thing when Shiver entered at #8! Tinchy Stryder/Taio Cruz 'Second Chance' (#22 - does anyone even remember how this goes?) Not only do I remember how it goes but I was listening to it this morning and still really like it... definitely a guilty pleasure for me
July 24, 201312 yr Author Actually I think No Doubt's 'Looking Hot' should be on the list, yes I know it wasn't the best X Factor performance ever, but it still went out to about 10m people... and how did it do, Number 400 or so? If that's not an under-performance I don't know what is!! Alexandra Burke - Let It Go! A pre-album single that followed a top 3 hit, but only peaked at #33. Yeah but if there was hardly any airplay for it (which I don't think there was), you can't really have expected it to do much better!
July 24, 201312 yr Alexandra Burke - Let It Go! A pre-album single that followed a top 3 hit, but only peaked at #33. It's so not right that we live in a world where 'Start Without You' goes to #1, 'Elephant' goes top 3 and this happens. :(
July 24, 201312 yr DJ Fresh feat Dizzee Rascal - The Power Both artists coming off the back of Number Ones. DJ Fresh's previous two were massive sellers and this was Dizzee's first release in a long time. That is a REALLY good example. Some of the songs in this thread are quite literally taking the piss.
July 24, 201312 yr Yup, that week loads of big artists underperformed while Alexis Jordan's 'Happiness' massively outperformed most expectations to make #3. The other underperformances were will.i.am/Nicki Minaj 'Check It Out' (#11), Ne-Yo 'One In A Million' (#20), Tinchy Stryder/Taio Cruz 'Second Chance' (#22 - does anyone even remember how this goes?) and Nadine 'Insatiable' (#26). Roll Deep entered at #29. There was also a new entry at #39 for Jamiroquai with 'White Knuckle Ride' after X Factor, I don't remember if that was also considered an underperformance at the time, Jamiroquai were a bit irrelevant by that point :P Ah yes, I remember that week. It was the week that The Best Of Suede was released and I tried to get as many titles from the album into my commentary as I could. Thanks to Nadine, I even managed to get My Insatiable One in :D
July 24, 201312 yr That is a REALLY good example. Some of the songs in this thread are quite literally taking the piss. 'Alexandra Imelda Cecila Ewan Burke, you put that cup of urine right back in the toilet, naughty girl that's very unhygienic!'

July 24, 201312 yr Some of these songs mentioned were never going to do well because they didn't have airplay/were bad songs. When I think of songs that massively underperform I think of songs that have decent airplay, a decent song, promotion and yet still free fall out of the charts such as Something New (Children In Need, comeback single, decent aiprlay, Strictly performance, gone from the charts in a matter of weeks).

Yeah that's the kind of songs I was looking for with this thread really, but a lot of songs mentioned don't really fit that criteria at all (or as Griff put it, are "quite literally taking the piss"!)
July 24, 201312 yr Britney with Till the world ends. I thought that would be huge yet charted very low. Also for me Scissor Sisters - Fire with Fire. Maroon 5 - Misery Marina and The Diamonds - Primadonna. Girls Aloud - Something New The Script - We Cry. I swear this was tipped to do big things but only reached 14.

We Cry and Fire With Fire are great examples, I remember them both being all over the radio before release. Not sure about Misery but I think Harder To Breathe was played a lot and then only went in at #13. Edited July 24, 201312 yr by mango

Maroon 5 - Misery Marina and The Diamonds - Primadonna. Girls Aloud - Something New The Script - We Cry. I swear this was tipped to do big things but only reached 14. Primadonna did quite well I think. Agree about most of the others; wasn't expecting big things from Fire With Fire, but I was kinda disappointed to see it reach 'only' #11. And it was quite odd seeing Something New drop off so quickly!
July 24, 201312 yr Ellie Goulding - Figure 8 - peaked at #33 where as Explosions peaked at #13. On the strength of the two songs, definitely should of been the other way round. Amazing what an advert can do!
July 24, 201312 yr Usher - Climax is probably another one. Peaked at 4 and lasted a few weeks in the top 40.

And it was quite odd seeing Something New drop off so quickly! I think Primadonna was something painful like 200 copies away from #10 one week :( It was good for her I agree to nearly get a top 10 single and it hung around at ~#11 for a few weeks.
July 24, 201312 yr Why are Top 5 hits being included? It's not as if most of these songs were going to go to #1.
July 24, 201312 yr Laura Palmer is so much better than Pompeii, in my opinion so it's a real shame that it wasn't the one to sell so well. Edited July 24, 201312 yr by AnthonyT
July 24, 201312 yr #5 and falling out of the chart very quickly would definitely be an underperformance for some artists. If 'Skyfall' had done that for example it would absolutely have been an underperformance. There isn't a single threshold where a song suddenly stops being an 'underperformance', the word literally means performing 'under' what was expected. Some artists are expected to do better than others. Edited July 24, 201312 yr by Bré
