This doesn't really relate to the upcoming contest but I was wondering how people give marks out of 10 to each entry. This has sparked from seeing SevenSeize's rankings in his thread and memories of Bre's rankings (which are much less generous than mine). Below is how I ranked the songs in the previous contest which I feel is a bit OTT and I'm finding it increasingly hard to separate the entries to the point where it's becoming a problem. A rough guide for my rankings right now would be:

 

10 = superb

09 = great

08 = good

07 = average

06 = poor

05 = don't want to listen again

 

and then anything less than five is absolutely awful haha.

^ Same here, a 7 is like 'listenable but not out of choice' for me and a 5 is like I don't like it :lol:

I think the highest I've ranked anyone is 8.7 and that was Aquafina with 'Glowing'.

I thought you'd made a mistake there saying I'm LESS generous than you - I'm extremely generous with my rankings I think! 10 is reserved for really fantastic songs (nothing quite got it last contest but Azier and Korallreven were very close and may have got there with one more listen) but I hand out 8s, 8.5s and 9s fairly liberally and I will often give a 7 to a song I just thought was quite good. Everything below 5.5 is reserved for awful/very dull songs and the actual number I give to those is kind of arbitrary.

10 - Life changing

9 - Amazing

8 - Really good

7 - Good

6 - Decent enough

5 - Meh.

4 - Pretty bad

3 - Shit

 

etc.

 

I'm obviously a lot harsher with marks, I rate them like this:

 

10 - There can't be one because that implies perfection, I need to listen to a song a few times before it can even come close to a 10

9 - Excellent, but again restricted to the best of the best.

8 - Very good.

7 - Pretty good.

6 - Decent

5 - Average

4 - Weak

3 - Significantly weak (usually reserved for inoffensive generic/boring tracks)

2 - Awful

1 - Insufferable.

0 - Very rare that I see nothing redeeming in a song, but it has happened before.

And as for this contest, I have turned my plans around and have my first proper 'indie' entry, male vocals and all - reminds me of The Weeknd.

10 - basically amazing/perfect

09 - brilliant, potential to grow to amazing

08 - very good

07 - really quite good, but lacking that special something

06 - better than listenable

05 - just about listenable

04 - not something I would choose to listen to but not atrocious

03 - pretty awful

02 - eek

01 - almost unlistenable

00 - Persephonian entries/aural rape

 

In BJSC I usually range from the 3-8 range with the odd 9 popping up. I've only experienced about 5 10's in my entire time in the contest (excluding my own entries of course)

IDK if this is the place to start doing this though... but I think I kinda rate entries in BJSC a lot more generous than I would do if they were just random songs to rate in the chart. It's all comparative - your way of rating is pretty much accurate though.

I rank the songs this way: 1-100 - the best song usually has 16 or less. Then I rank other songs and give them various numbers (50 doesn't mean average though).

I run on this scale too and I've given a fair few 0s out in my time.

I don't usually, I used to but now I just kind of vote in a quite straightforward way :lol: My scale was more general, but yeah.

I give them star ratings on iTunes, and when making my final decision, listen to all five star songs and rank them. That doesn't mean I think all songs are top mark-worthy, it's just an easy shorthand.

Now I just need to wait till what I assume will be Sunday for confirmations to open.

Yeah I think a star rating is better than marks out of 10 for this kind of thing. I guess in my head I give a song one of the following categories:

 

***** Amazing

**** Good

*** Average

** Awful

* I couldn't make myself listen to the whole song

 

The only songs that I would give one star to in the final of the last contest are 'The Ocean', 'Menagerie', '2025' and 'Weapon For Saturday' which proves that the general standard is very high!
