Istanbul, Tokyo, or Madrid!

Which city do you want to win? Or, which city do you THINK will win?

Tokyo and Madrid were both in the running last time (2016) but lost to Rio.

All 3 have current or recent concerns (Madrid has 26% unemployment, Japan had its nuclear disaster 2 years ago, Turkey shares a border with Syria) but do any of these cause a disadvantage? Considering the event is 7 years from now?

I'm hoping for the Olympics to be in Tokyo! Also the unemployment and political unrest problems could get worse in Spain and Turkey whereas Tokyo is still running okay since the nuclear disaster.

I'd completely forgotten Tokyo were in the running, for some reason I had Chicago in my head.

It looks like being the tightest race since... well, 2012 really. Each city has its attractions and drawbacks, Madrid may argue that the Spanish economy shouldn't work against them given it should be in recovery in seven years but if they're spending the money soon then that's irrelevant. Tokyo is probably the safe option and '64 was a long time ago but it's still a hindrance when you're up against two cities that have never hosted it before. Any other time Istanbul would probably be the frontrunner, but after two "risky" Games in Sochi and Rio I can't see the IOC going for it.

Announcement in 2 hours apparently! They're in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

ODDS:

Tokyo 5-6, Madrid 5-4, Istanbul 6-1

The Spanish are saying that most of the proposed venues already exist so it is a fairly low risk and the state of the Spanish economy is less of an issue.

My guess is that Istanbul will finish third with Madrid emerging as the winner.

I hope its not Tokyo, Beijing hosted in 2008, it seems fairly recent as China/Japan are neighbours.

I'm more swaying towards Istanbul

I hope it's Tokyo! I might even try to get tickets to go to Tokyo to see it if I have enough money in 2020. I've always wanted to go there and experience the olympics too. :D

Having flown both journeys Istanbul is nearer London than Tokyo is Beijing

Tokyo's to lose now I expect. Can't see them going for Istanbul based on recent events/Syria.

I was thinking it was going to be Madrid so shocked at that.

Guess with Spain economy as it is Madrid paid the lowest amount of bribes

Can't see it being anything but Tokyo now

Are you suggesting the London 2012 bid won as the result of a bribe?

Of course things could be different now than under the Samaranch era but Samaranch made Sepp Blatter seem a beacon of morality

I was really egging on Istanbul and I don't quite know why, but well done Tokyo all the same!

He retired in 2001, i.e. four years before London was awarded the 2012 games. Jacques Rogge is generally regarded as having been a very good replacement.

Back on topic, apparently Madrid and Istanbul were joint second in the first vote. They had to have a separate vote to decide which was the first to be eliminated so I was almost right about Istanbul going out first.

Oooh, well done Tokyo. I'm sure the Japanese will give us a good show and I'd definitely trust them not to screw things up so probably the best decision.
