Single & Album Summary

Its all wide open next week in the singles chart, will Calvin Harris get a second week, or will One Direction take a step closer to the #1 position, Lily Allen could also have a chance returning back to #1. New single releases come from all about she, Rebecca Ferguson, James Arthur, Leona Lewis, and another track from Justin Bieber. And we could be seeing Mariah Carey and The Pogues with their respectable yearly appearances in the top 40 Singles chart.

Will One Direction hold out for a second week at #1, big competition this week comes from Richard & Adam with their Christmas album titled "The Christmas Album" also Christmas albums from Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson, other key album releases from Rebecca Ferguson, Britney Spears, Chris Brown, Il Divo, Jack Topping, Less Than Jake, and Nightwish.

Just a reminder with Xmas just round the corner don't expect any mids for week beginning 23rd and the 30th December, normal services should resume after 6th January 2014. Please refer to the iTunes thread topic for those particular weeks.

Midweek Charts: One Direction lead Sony domination

by Paul Williams, Music Week http://www.musicweek.com/news/read/midweek...mination/056946

One Direction's Midnight Memories is leading a Sony domination of the UK artist albums chart as it heads for a second week at No 1.

The Syco release is one of seven albums from the major among the Top 10 artist sellers at this stage of the week, according to Official Charts Company data, leaving its arch rival Universal with only three titles in the 10.

Midnight Memories, which debuted at No 1 last Sunday with the highest first-week sales for an artist album of 2013, is around 20,000 sales in front in the new chart week with Universal acts Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow in second and third spots. However, most of the rest of the Top 10 comes from Sony.

Besides One Direction, Sony is boosted by having the only two brand new entries in the Top 10 at this stage of the week from respectively Il Divo and Rebecca Ferguson. Il Divo's Syco album A Musical Affair is new at 4 and Ferguson's second RCA set Freedom is new at 6 and follows her performing on The X Factor last weekend. Her first album Heaven debuted and peaked at No 3 in 2011.

The major's hand also takes in Epic acts Olly Murs' Right Place Right Time down 4-5, Celine Dion's Columbia album Loved Me Back To Life, which holds at No 8, RCA's Elvis Presley retrospective The Nation's Favourite Elvis Songs, which falls 7-9, and Syco act Susan Boyle's Home For Christmas, down a place to No 10.

Outside the 10, Sony highlights include James Arthur's self-titled Syco debut up 18-13 with sales rising 116% following an X Factor performance, although two of its acts - Leona Lewis and Britney Spears - are facing their lowest-charting albums yet in the UK. Lewis's Syco set Christmas With Love is new at 18 in the midweeks, following her previous albums charting at 1, 1 and 3, and RCA's Britney Spears is new at 19 with Britney Jam. Her lowest-ranked album in the UK to date is In The Zone, which made it to No 13 in 2003. Also out this week are Syco duo whose The Christmas Album is new at 25 at this stage.

Robbie Williams is narrowly back in front in the battle of the Take That stars with his Island album Swings Both Ways up 3-2 to swap places with Polydor act Gary Barlow's Since I Saw You Last. Universal's other Top 10 album is Interscope/Polydor act Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2, which drops 5-7.

Sales of Rod Stewart's Capitol/Decca album Time almost quadruple on the week to lift it 38-11 after he appeared on ITV's Surprise Surprise last Sunday, while other big sales gainers include Reprise/Warner Bros's Michael Buble with Christmas whose sales are up 85%, although it slips a place to 13 in the midweeks. Meanwhile, Muse are new at 30 with the Helium 3/Warner Bros-issued Live At Rome Olympic Stadium.

The singles market is very quiet at the moment with no brand new entries in the Top 10, while there are several tracks that could be No 1 this coming weekend. At present Parlphone's Lily Allen leads with Somewhere Only We Know looking to return to the top with a 4-1 climb, but it is little more than 1,000 sales ahead of One Direction's Syco track Story Of My Life progerssing 3-2, while around 2,500 sales behind No 1 at present is Columbia act Calvin Harris's Under Control with Alesso and Hurts. This falls 1-3.

Also just a few thousand sales off the top spot, Virgin act Bastille's Of The Night climbs 5-4 and Polydor-signed Gary Barlow falls 2-5 with Let Me Go. Interscope/Polydor's Eminem is back up 7-6 with The Monster featuring Rihanna as Polydor's Ellie Goulding regains a place to 7 with How Long Will I Love You. Avicii moves into the Top 10 with the Positiva/PRMD-issued Hey Brother up 14-8 as Positiva/Virgin act Martin Garrix's former No 1 Animals reclimbs 10-9 and Interscope/Polydor act Lady Gaga's Do What I Want with R Kelly is up 11-10.

Atlantic-signed trio All About She are new at 11 in the midweeks with Higher (Free), while Syco's James Arthur is new at 12 with Recovery and RCA's Rebecca Ferguson new at 14 with I Hope after X Factor performances last Sunday.

The X Factor is also responsible for a revival of Mumford & Sons' Gentlemen Of The Road/Island single I Will Wait after it was covered by contestant Luke Friend. It climbs 82-25, while the show's former winner Leona Lewis is new at 32 with her Syco single One More Sleep. Also with a brand new entry is Justin Bieber with the Def Jam/Virgin EMI-issued Change Me new at 21 in the week to date.

Midweek charts update: One Direction heading for another 100,000 plus sales

Source: MW

by Paul Williams

One Direction's Midnight Memories will become the first artist album this year to sell 100,000 copies for two consecutive weeks.

The Syco album, which achieved the highest weekly sales of 2013 for an artist release last week after shifting 237,338 copies, has in this current week already sold another 87,692 units, according to the Official Charts Company. It still has Friday and Saturday to add to this tally.

One Direction's main rivals are erstwhile Take That colleagues Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow with Williams now moving ahead in the race. Sales of the Island-issued Swings Both Ways are up 3.5% on the week to lift it 3-2 as Barlow's Polydor album Since I Saw You Last falls 2-3 in the latest Sales Flashes.

There are brand new Top 10 entries at this point in the week from Syco's Il Divo and RCA's Rebecca Ferguson at Nos 4 and 6 respectively, while Rod Stewart's Capitol/Decca album Time has climbed back into the Top 10 with sales rising 362% after he appeared on ITV's Surprise Surprise last Sunday. It moves 38-10.

The singles market is having one of its quietest weeks of the year with no brand new entries in the Top 10 and no title yet shifting more than 40,000 copies. At present Parlophone's Lily Allen, who fell from No 1 last Sunday, is leading with Somewhere Only We Know making a three-place climb back to the top, but she is only a few thousand sales ahead of several singles. These are led by One Direction's Syco release Story Of My Life and also include Virgin act Bastille's Of The Night and Columbia-signed Calvin Harris' Under Control - with Alesso and Hurts - which debuted at No 1 last weekend.

NO SALES INFO

Lily or Calvin for number 1 this week please though I know it won't happen :(

Bit of a quiet week this week, hopefully Rebecca can get into the top 20 on Sunday and all about she could get a huge hit never saw that coming but I'm looking forward to seeing how big a fall McFly are going to have next week :)

I'd prefer Calvin Harris but surprised his first week's sales weren't higher....
If Lily Allen gets number one again where would that put her on UK Female soloists with most weeks at #1, I don't know if Geri Halliwell has that record too?, my guess would be Leona had the most.

Edited by Leonardo

13 - Leona Lewis

9 - Sandie Shaw

7 - Cilla Black & Lily Allen

6 - Helen Shapiro, Alexandra Burke, Kiki Dee & Mary Hopkin

5 - Shirley Bassey, Adele, Gabrielle, Lisa Stansfield, Duffy, Geri Halliwell, Yazz

Edited by fchd

To complete (I think) the list

4 - Jessie J, Florence & The Machine, Kate Bush, Cheryl Cole, Rita Ora, Estelle, Barbara Dickson, Elaine Paige, Anne Shelton, Lindy Layton, Barbara Gaskin

3 - Petula Clark, Emeli Sandé, Pixie Lott, Ruby Murray, Billie Piper, Tina Charles, Sonique, Lena Martell, Michelle McManus

2 - Lulu, Alma Cogan, Melanie C, Bonnie Tyler, Sonia, Emma Bunton, Natasha Bedingfield, Martine McCutcheon, Vera Lynn, Tasmin Archer, Kelly Marie, Ms D, Wendy Richard

1 - Dusty Springfield, Katie Melua, Kelly Osbourne, Melanie B, Julie Covington, Sandi Thom, Cher Lloyd, Gabrielle Aplin, Cass Fox, Tulisa, Diana Vickers, Jackie Trent, Aneka

List includes where the female is named in the artist on chart. if solo, in a duet, a featured artist or whatever. It excludes membership of a group where the individual is not named individually.

I'm looking forward to seeing how big a fall McFly are going to have next week :)

I'm not looking forward to that at all :( even if they fall out of the Top 40, I'm just gonna pretend they didn't :)

A look at Twitter suggests:

All About She are the highest new entry in the singles chart at #10 with "Higher (Free)"

Britney is flying off the shelves at #14 in the albums.

That is all.

May I suggest the midweeks change their name because I am sick of reading tweets about midweek sporting events.

Britney is doing very bad! I expected her to end the week at #14 and be around #7 in the first set of midweeks! Her physical sales must be very poor considering how high she is on iTunes.

Britney's album is hardly flying been at #14

oops...didn't refresh the page... and I agree on the second part regarding midweek sporting events

I'd prefer Calvin Harris but surprised his first week's sales weren't higher....

Me too, I had hoped for 90-100k and even though 74k isn't awful it's a bit disappointing and makes it look unlikely to get a second week as he'll probably only shift another 40k this week

If OneD end up at #1, their single sales are going to be low for a #1 single, they did 60k last week, they probably end up selling the same or maybe less. I think whoever ends up at #1, going to struggle to pass 65k plus by the end of the week, Calvin managed 74k+ his sales will be down on this week.

Digital sales are proportionally much smaller against physical sales in December - so it makes sense.

I'm team 1D this week... Their last 2 updates were very good.
This is the week that the Christmas albums really take off, could see more then half the album top ten being Christmas albums by the time we get to the Christmas charts and not sure how often that happens
