December 28, 201311 yr It wasn't that uncommon in the 70's and 80's for records to peak at 41 by being hyped into the chart. The practice was for somebody (not directly employed by the record companies involved) to go to the chart shops and purchase the records. Also if they could, pursued the shop to enter none existent sales into the BMRB diary. The hypers would get it into the chart at say 49 (days of the top 50) then put more effort in which could push to 41, then they killed the hype to see if it would take off. If it slipped back, then they would either give up or try once more. Generally I would say if it reached 41 and stayed 4 weeks in the chart, it was hyped and a flopped attempt. You could say that about any 4 week run that didn't get to close to the top 30, though during the 70's. It's one of the reasons that TOTP only used the top 30 chart. Past 30 and you could be assured of a reasonable amount of real sales. The practice was reported on in 1978 and it was shown that the practice did work, with both the Rah Band and Alessi having top ten hits by being hyped. Several records on the A&M label were reported as being hyped and in the list is a Peter Frampton record from 1977, who was on that label and fits in with the reported case from 1978. Before 1969 hyped records could get all over the charts. The practice of buying records into the chart became too expensive as the number of records stores expanded in the 90's.
December 28, 201311 yr I remember thinking that 'Run The Show' was going to be absolutely huge at the time. Such a shame it missed out on top 40! :( 'Dancing Tonight' remains her best song with 'Whine Up' in 2nd! <3
December 28, 201311 yr Runner-up, perhaps a bit too cheesy to sneak into the top 40 even for 1999: BddgVkX_e70 Loved Toy-Box. Was so surprised this flopped as it was all over The Box.
December 28, 201311 yr What a crime "A Sorta Fairytale Peak at No. 41 26/10/02 - Tori Amos" such a beautiful song. The demo version released on her 5 disc 'Piano collection' is my favourite piece of music ever. wD1AnQg-2NY

August 11, 201410 yr Very interesting list, thank you for posting! It's just come back to me how gutted I was at Tori Amos's "A Sorta Fairytale" missing out at no41 in 2002. I loved it the moment I heard it (really nice video too!) and thought it would give her another Top 40 hit for the first time after a few years. Sadly it wasn't to be. I remember being disappointed listening to the Top 40 and there being no sign of it that Sunday, and then being rather galled later on finding just how close it had come!! "Invisible" by Tilt and Zee is a real dance classic from 1998, shame it just missed out on a Top 40 place by one position! "Run This Show" by Kat deLuna was everywhere around its release date, it seemed to be on the music channels all the time and was a very catchy song. I was predicting it to be a big hit, and was really surprised that it only reached no41! Going back in time to the 80s, shame about "Hip To Be Square" just missing out at no41. Also I had forgotten about it, but this list just reminded me of how disappointed I was by Bob Dylan missing out at no41 with "Must Be Santa" in 2009. It would have been great to see Bob Dylan back in the charts with a new track after so many years, and with a brand new Christmas track, but it was a pity he missed out by just one place.
August 11, 201410 yr Run The Show Peak at No. 41 07/06/08 - Kat DeLuna featuring Busta Rhymes Forgot about this travesty. Was the only great thing Kat ever did but my god is it good. Sounds like a classic even today :(
August 13, 201410 yr A record that almost peaked at number 41 was 'Take 5' by Northside in 1991. Due to a lack of availability of studio guests for Top Of The Pops (or possibly due to a last minute pull out) that week, the band were invited to come on and play. This never happened at the time even though it happened regularly in the 70s...you had to be in the top 40 to be on TOTP. Anyway, the band played - the number 41 was displayed like some kind of statement of revolution and 'Take 5' climbed the chart the next week...to number 40! Edited August 13, 201410 yr by richie
August 13, 201410 yr Gotta be the 2nd worst chart position, after #76. No - #76 should be the worst after #101 as 101-200 are not even published. Anyone got a list of singles that peaked at #100? Edited August 13, 201410 yr by euro music

August 13, 201410 yr Kylie's Santa Baby peaked at no 76. It must have sold loads of copies for that peak, as it keeps reappearing every Christmas.
August 13, 201410 yr Kylie's Santa Baby peaked at no 76. It must have sold loads of copies for that peak, as it keeps reappearing every Christmas. 75k+ in fact! :D
August 16, 201410 yr The Choir Of Westminster Abbey - Ubi Caritas - was this to do with the royal wedding? LIKE THESE: The Overtones - Loving The Sound Same Difference - Shine On Forever (Photo Frame) Ultrabeat - Use Somebody Waldo's People - Lose Control - not bad for a last place Eurovision entry!
August 16, 201410 yr Never thought I would see a list of songs where my favourite was by a member of the Mavericks, but somehow they've managed it with those 100 peaks.
August 16, 201410 yr The Choir Of Westminster Abbey - Ubi Caritas - was this to do with the royal wedding? Yup. I was rather annoyed at it scraping into the top 100 as the artist credit was a bit of a mess. But on the upside, Gregorian chant making the UK top 100 *.*
August 16, 201410 yr Lose Control is still incredible, was my ringtone for three years so every time I hear it I still hunt around for my phone!
