Which UK number 1 on the official chart did surprise you when it got to Number 1, when it first came out you did not expect it to get to number 1.

I was surprised What About Us got to number one, well not when I saw it's massive lead on iTunes or in the midweeks, but it still surprised me.

The obvious answer to this is 'Let's Get Ready To Rhumble'

'What About Us', 'The Monster' and 'Under Control' going to #1 were surprising at the time too. I also didn't expect 'Counting Stars' to go all the way.

Same here

I knew a week or two beforehand that 'What About Us' would do it.

I'd agree PJ + Duncan was the big surprise, 'Counting Stars' and 'Somewhere Only We Know' were pretty nasty surprises for me too.

It was What About Us for me in 2013 - mainly because it was a Saturdays single and thought I'd never see the day they finally made it. I'm so glad it did because its definitely one of the highlights of the last 12 months.
Ellie Goulding's 'Burn' was a big surprise for me. I can remember being on holiday at the time so I hadn't been keeping track of the mids or iTunes but when I checked my phone for the official chart, I couldn't believe Ellie was #1.

I must admit I was surprised the track spend 3 weeks at #1, I really thought it would drop after a week.

Get Lucky.

I loved the track from first play but I would never have expected Daft Punk to grace the top 20 again, let alone get a million selling #1.

I think it got the other weeks by default because there was nothing else out, although it's turned into a mega hit over time so fair play to her.

Actually yes with 'Get Lucky', never would have imagined that at all.

well if i based it off the songs ALONE, 'Royals' would probably be the most unexpected for me, doesn't really have the typical 'sound' of a potential chart smash!

there really weren't any major surprises (aside from pj & duncan of course). i guess Get Lucky kinda came out of nowhere, didn't seem like the kinda thing that'd top the chart for a good few weeks

thought Counting Stars would be a long-running #2/3 hit, was surprised when it knocked off Wrecking Ball after 1 week!

I wouldn't have expected Daft Punk to get a #1 in 2013 at first, however, before Get Lucky got released, there was a little short clip of it that got released/leaked, and I was seeing people on other non-music Internet forums talking about it, and also Facebook friends, etc. So even before the song was released I was aware there was a lot of hype surrounding their comeback. So it getting to #1 was probably not the biggest surprise for me.

I'm not really sure what is. Maybe Counting Stars, since I was surprised it even went top 40 at first. Most of the other #1s I was at the very least expecting top 10 for.

PJ & Duncan, definitely out of all the No.1s.
What About Us for me. Considering their previous two singles sold nothing and their airplay/buzz was completely dead I was very surprised The Sats became the fastest selling song of the year at one point.
I'm still amazed that "Animals" made the Top 50, let alone Number 1. It still sounds like it was knocked up in about 5 minutes.

If that's the case, it's the best 5 minutes anyone ever spent.

I recall this being said in the Chart Show Thread the week 'Animals' entered at #1!

'Animals' is good but I think I prefer 'Look Right Through'. Neither are the sort of songs I'd listen to out of choice, but ones I can appreciate when I do hear them.

Oh, he's said it at least 700 times. I hope people will consider this when they decide to accuse me of being repetitive. :drama:

I suppose if you're looking at it from this point last year, the concept of Robin Thicke, T.I & Pharrell having the biggest hit of the year seems a bit hard to believe considering none of them were exactly massive artists at the time (though it obvs wasn't surprising at all at the time of release etc.)

Everything that was genuinely unexpected right up until it did has already been mentioned.
