I'll go ahead and mention Paradise and Good Feeling since they'd both been charting for so many weeks before it happened.

Also Turn Up The Music, Feel The Love, Hall Of Fame, and to a lesser extent Beneath Your Beautiful and Candy

2012 was less predictable than 2013 IMO.

Yeah, 'Spectrum' and 'Beneath Your Beautiful' are the obvious ones. 'Candy' was a surprise too considering the zero Radio 1 support and the fact that it sticks out like a sore thumb in Robbie's recent discography.

Just a thought, perhaps this thread could be altered slightly so we can discuss surprise #1s from all years across the 21st century. Just saves numerous threads like this popping up for multiple years.

I thought this was a very obvious #1 myself tbh

I was predicting Calvin Harris & Example would get there at the time.

basically just Spectrum, Feel the Love, and Beneath Your Beautiful. just about everything else was fairly conceivable (well, i didn't expect Gabrielle Aplin to get a #1 hit by the end of the year, despite it being on the JL ad!)

even though 'Somebody That I Used To Know' and 'We Are Young' were obvious hits at the time, i must admit that a year previously i'd have NEVER expected a song like STIUTK to reach #1

Surprised as in "I didn't think this could make it, but I'm glad it did!"

- Icona Pop "I love it"

- The Saturdays "What about us"

Surprised as in "I couldn't see why back then, but now I get it"

- Miley Cyrus "We can't stop"

- Jason Derulo "Talk dirty"

- Duke Dumont "Need U 100%"

Surprised as in "Was it really necessary to take this to #1?"

- PJ & Duncan "Let's get ready to rumble"

Surprised as in "I didn't think this could make it, but I'm glad it did!"

- Florence & The Machine "Spectrum"

- Gabrielle Aplin "The power of love"

Surprised as in "Was it really necessary to take this to #1?"

- Wiley "Heatwave"

- Cover Drive "Twilight"

- Tulisa "Young"

Surprised as in "Really? Where's your music taste, people?"

- Sam And The Womp "Bom bom"

I agree with the majority of comments so far...

Feel The Love - when I first heard this I hoped for top 40 but the more I heard it getting played I was hoping for a top 10 but never number 1, that completely exceeded my expectations!

Spectrum - the fact Calvin Harris remixed this made me think it would be a top 10 hit but getting to number 1 was a big shock but a well deserved result for Florence!

Beneath Your Beautiful - I thought this would do well off the back of his X Factor performance but I never thought this would get to number 1

That and The Power Of Love, I thought that had peaked when it got to number 5 but I was happy this got to number 1

Definetly a good year for shock number ones, I don't think any things really surprised me this year except for the high sales period!

If that's the case, it's the best 5 minutes anyone ever spent.

Agreed! One of the best chart toppers of 2013!!

I think it's got to be Lorde for me, I was expecting James Arthur to beat her just as it was his first proper single!

That and PJ and Duncan coming from out of nowhere and One Republic doing so well! I thought Counting Stars would be one of those low peak long runners that would peak around 13 and hang around forever, I never thought it would get two weeks at number 1

Otherwise, its been a but of a predictable year but the best thing about 2013 was those 12/13 weeks of 100k plus sales for the number 1, I've never seen a run like it before!!

Bom Bom was made to be a one-week one hit wonder :P

Another vote for Feel the Love, one of my friends at uni played it weeks before release and no one knew what it was, I asked her, she said Rudimental and looking them up they didn't even have a Wikipedia page! When it charted in June that week of a Feel the Love/We Are Young/Euphoria felt like one of the best top 3s in years.

Spectrum/Beneath Your Beautiful both feel much less of a surprise now due to one being Calvin Harris and the other Emilé Sande, but they stood out at the time. Gangnam Style too, I remember being amazed it sold so much as I presumed everyone simply just watched it on Youtube!

Cover Drive - "Twilight"

Chris Brown - "Turn Up the Music"

Tulisa - "Young"

Rita Ora featuring Tinie Tempah - "R.I.P."

Gary Barlow and the Commonwealth Band featuring Military Wives - "Sing"

Florence and the Machine - "Spectrum (Say My Name)"

Wiley featuring Ms D - "Heatwave"

Rita Ora - "How We Do (Party)"

Sam and the Womp - "Bom Bom"

Labrinth featuring Emeli Sandé - "Beneath Your Beautiful"

Robbie Williams - "Candy"

Gabrielle Aplin - "The Power of Love"

These were the songs I was surprised took the top spot in 2012. Bold are the biggest shocks. I did not follow the UK hype machine as well in 2012 as I did in 2013.

Feel the Love was quite surprising for me because I'd hardly heard the song before its release.

Spectrum as well, but not THAT surprising since the original had climbed into the top 100 on iTunes before its release week.

Also Little Things by One Direction was surprising given the way it was released.

Beneath Your Beautiful for me. I got Labrinth's album in like March 2012 and then he released Express Yourself and Treatment and I thought there was just no way a sixth single was going to do anything in the charts and yet it was his biggest hit and went to #1. Madness.

If there should be three catogories, shouldn't they be:

1. Didn't expect it to be #1 when you first heard the song.

2. Didn't expect it to be #1 at the beginning of the week it got there.

3. Didn't expect it to be #1 as of the chart show announcement.

But overall some ones I found surprising were Promises (even though sales were low at the top of the charts, I thought JLS would return to #1 at first), Don't Go (I was convinced Heaven would get #1, since it had major airplay on Heart, Capital and some of my local stations, whilst I never heard Don't Go on any of these stations pre-release) and Dance With Me Tonight (I didn't expect it to climb to #1 on its third week).

Promises and Don't Go are two of the best #1s of the year, so it's great that they got there! It's a shame Heaven couldn't be #1 though.

Yes, these are a bit tedious.. But whilst its here, definitely nero - promises. It was the lowest sales in 72 weeks I think. Lucky bast*rds :P

Swagger jagger

And swagger jagger urgh

Promises & Someone Like You.

I remember sales were REALLY low when Nero got there, but i was still surprised it happened. thought with all the hype around Swagger Jagger that it would've held on for a second week. And in a time where 'club bangers' were all over the place, having a song like SLY at #1 was really quite refreshing

I agree. I did recommend the title of the 2012 thread being altered so it could included all years within the 21st century but I think I'll go ahead and change the name myself.
