Even if Beck doesn't sell a single copy the rest of the week, he still ended up selling a lot more copies than I thought he would. I hope he can hold on to the top 5 at least, hopefully sail through to 10k on the way.

I answered the question that was posed :D

Noahspike was drawing the comparison.

Wait, what?! I made no mention of 'Blurred Lines' :).

I guess 'Happy' is technically crossing the million mark at #2. But the fact that it's the #1 selling song at the exact time it makes its million sale (ie: #1 in the midweeks) could be seen by some as even more impressive than the 'Blurred Lines' situation, whose #1 status was slightly outdated. This is so pedantic though!

So Happy on 993(ish)k as of last night then - could the OCC announce the millionth sale tomorrow?

WOW!!!! Blurred did 190,572 - 198,856 - 193,783 - 123,052 in its 1st 4 weeks

Amazing!!!

Yeah I'm not sure but it was released 3 weeks early as it's hype was nicely building & I think it got some kind of tv promo in week 2?!

I'm surprised no one has asked this (they probably have but I've missed it) but how many records have returned to Number 1 twice in the same chart run (i.e. three separate stints at Number 1)? And is 'Happy' breaking a record by returning to Number 1 six weeks after it was last Number 1? I know 'Three Lions' had a five week gap, but I can't think of any others that had longer.

There will be more in Sunday's commentary but it will be only the third song to have three runs at the top and the first since the 1950s. I haven't yet checked the gap between spells at the top but from memory The Beatles' She Loves You had a fairly long gap between spells at number one.

Wow, that's quite some record then! Just checked the chart run for 'She Loves You' and that had an 8 week gap between its spells at Number 1.

'Three Lions' also had 3 runs at #1 but I can understand why that might not be counted since one of the runs was with the '98 version. (The sales of the two are combined though so I count it as the same song and hence a third/fourth song with 3 runs at #1).

It wasn't the same chart run and that's what I'm counting.

Oh yes, in that case 'Happy' is definitely the third :P But I'd bet the OCC probably won't even mention 'Three Lions' when they make the inevitable news story about 'Happy' returning to #1 again.

If you're going to count "Three Lions" it's only a small step then to link the "Do They Know It's Christmas" versions together...

(Okay so it's probably a medium sized step)

The OCC doesn't combine the sales of those. And they're by different artists.

Midweek Charts update: Pharrell scores third million seller

Pharrell Williams' Happy has become his third UK million-selling single within the space of just eight months.

The RCA-issued track, which is expected to return to No 1 this Sunday, reached seven figures this week, according to Official Charts Company data, and follows Daft Punk's Get Lucky and Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines (also featuring TI) all reaching the same landmark in 2013.

The achievement makes Williams only the second act in history after The Beatles to be part of the main line-up of an act to achieve more than two million-selling singles in the UK, although the likes of George Michael have managed it if multi-artist singles appearances such as Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas on which he featured are counted.

Equally remarkable is the speed in which Williams has managed this feat. Get Lucky reached a million at the end of last June and only eight months later two more singles involving Williams have followed suit.

Happy is presently around 14,000 sales in front in the midweek chart with Capitol act Sam Smith dropping 1-2 with Money On My Mind, Atlantic-signed Clean Bandit's Rather Be featuring Jess Glynne holding at No 3, Katy Perry's Dark Horse with Juicy J rising 6-4 and fellow Virgin release Redlights by Tiesto new at 5. There are also brand new entries to the Top 10 from Sign Of The Times/Epic's Foxes and RCA's Paloma Faith.

Virgin's Bastille are narrowly in front at the top of the artist albums market with Bad Blood, having returned there post-Brits last Sunday. However, the gap is only around 800 sales with Beck's newly-issued EMI album Morning Phase at No 2 and about 1,000 copies with Domino-signed Arctic Monkeys' AM, which drops 2-3. Ellie Goulding's Polydor album Halcyon holds at 4 in the week to date as Beyonce's self-titled RCA-handled set rises 7-5. Brand new to the Top 10 is Domino-signed Wild Beats' Present Tense. - Source: MW by, Paul Williams

What about Rihanna?

Luckily, Neneh Cherry is holding onto her number 34 position, i really want her to stay top 40, its a fantastic album.

err MW we have Rihanna? She'll have 4 in a matter of weeks so will keep ahead anyway ;P within 8 months is quite something though its all "featured artist" crap in hits now, makes chart histories so spotty which annoys the pedantic part of my brain!

Beck down to 5 (or lower?) by Sunday then. Low no1 sales I fear in albums
