Posted March 3, 201411 yr Last week I had asked if radio airplay was a beneficial part of a success to an artist's single, however I'm now wondering whether you guys think tv airplay, radio airplay or both are beneficial to promoting a song. I'd say they are the same as radio airplay allows millions of people to hear to song, whilst TV airplay allows people browsing on tv to come across songs in video form, but what do you think?
March 3, 201411 yr It's best to have both, but if you could only have one, then radio airplay is the best choice.
March 3, 201411 yr I'd say radio as it's a lot more universal and accessible to all, TV is obvs very important as well, particularly for connecting with a younger audience. Edited March 3, 201411 yr by Chez Wombat
March 3, 201411 yr I think it depends on what music channel or radio station - which is the most popular/has a wider audience - although like Eric says, if you had to choose one then generally radio would be better.
March 3, 201411 yr Both are advantageous, but Radio Airplay is generally more important as it reaches a larger audience. Youtube views should probably be considered too as demonstrated by the likes of PSY and Baauer...
March 4, 201411 yr You have more chance of radio airplay as it's designed for that medium...but, if you can get your song played anywhere on TV (adverts, trailers, over the top of a montage) and there's some kind of association with that e.g. "as heard in the latest Dr Who" then that will translate into a lot more sales I would think. Remember back in the 80s and early 90s when to appear in a Levi's advert instantly meant a number one single? (Unless you were T. Rex of course...)
March 4, 201411 yr Author I think tv airplay is becoming more important these days as people have more free time and won't be in cars to listen to radio as often
March 4, 201411 yr I think it depends on an artist / song / video. Let's say if the video is interesting the video play will be more important for it than it would be with the average video. And some songs do work better with the video. I remember 'Gold Dust' by DJ Fresh not being playlisted by anyone on its initial release but it did get a respectable peak and quite massive sales and longevity based only on TV airplay. But in most cases the Radio play is still more prominent.
March 4, 201411 yr I don't understand why you would put "Both" as a possible answer to "What is better?", because : - it's a grammatically incorrect answer, you can't say "both are better", - yes we know "both are important blablabla" but that's a pretty bland/obious answer, the question is which one has the biggest impact. Back to the topic, I'd say radio airplay is far more important. I don't think that many people watch videos on TV nowadays, most of us watch videos on Youtube and the rest of the population don't really care for music channels.

I said they are the same, I never had the option both as they are both better so it's not grammatically incorrect, you've just perceived it differently ;)
March 4, 201411 yr I think both are as important to get a big hit, missing one could be the difference between getting a top 10 or a top 40 hit. Though I would say radio is the key to getting exposure as TV can be more restricted and may only appeal to a certain audience whereas radio there is more choice and more variety in the playlists, except for Capital FM obviously :)

ISTM that music videos are the least effective form of TV promo - the music channels get a few tens of thousands watching them at peak times, whereas chat shows, and especially 'talent' shows, have audiences of millions...
March 6, 201411 yr I agree with Radio Airplay being better as more people can listen to the artist's music, but TV Airplay is becoming more important as it gets more viewers
March 6, 201411 yr I think that radio airplay is more significant, you always see songs getting boosts/maintaining longevity on iTunes after being playlisted on major radio stations. Obviously TV airplay is important as well, but I think that radio plays will reach more people than TV plays.
