Biography

Ellie Goulding is a British vocalist whose music finds the balance between electro-pop and indie folk. Born in Hereford, England, she later moved to the country's east coast to study drama at the University of Kent. Goulding had developed a love for folk music as a teenager, and her time at University also exposed her to electronica. After two years, she took a break from her studies and moved to West London, where she pursued a career as an alternative singer/songwriter and befriended producers like Starsmith and Frankmusik, who gave her songs an electro-pop twist. In 2009, Goulding began building an audience via the internet, where early tracks like "Starry Eyed" and a cover of Sam Sparro's "Black & Gold" were posted on taste-making MP3 blogs such as Discodust. Goulding soon graduated from the blogosphere to print media, gaining praise from mainstream publications like The Guardian and fielding offers from record labels. She ultimately signed a major-label deal with Polydor Records and began making preparations to release her debut album. In the meantime, she penned songs for Diana Vickers, Gabriella Climi, and others.

 

During the final weeks of 2009, Goulding topped the BBC's "Sound of 2010," a poll conducted by British music critics and industry insiders to identify new talent. Building on that momentum, she released Lights — a sparkling debut album that splashed Goulding's vocal flutter across a landscape of acoustic and synthesized instruments — in March 2010. Lights topped the U.K. charts during its first week and spun off a Top Five single, "Starry Eyed," which also charted well in Ireland and New Zealand. Later that year, the album was re-released as Bright Lights, featuring seven new recordings (including a cover of Elton John's "Your Song," which peaked at number two). In 2012, Goulding returned with her sophomore album, Halcyon, which showcased an even more sonically adventurous, electro-pop-infused sound. Oh was this not only early twenties last week? That drop :(

Last week for HLWILY please

Don't understand why this has flopped so bad for 1D here - It's been huge in all the other countries it's been released in, And reached #12 in the States.

Where has it been huge? It has a bunch of high peaks due to being an instant grat, but I don't know of anywhere where it's a proper hit.

Ouch at the drop for HLWILY this week, but it does need to die now.

This has taken quite a dip from last week, next week to be the first Ellie Goulding free chart in quite a while then!

My love for this song as started very late. Although it's wearing off very fast! Good to see "Goodness Gracious" back ahead (I think anyway).

I hope Goodness Gracious is still in, its her best from this era

I know pride is a big thing for the Welsh but this is going a bit too far.

That has to be the worst single One Direction have ever released - I don't mind the verses but Louis' bit is annoying and the chorus is poor and weak. There is far better on the album, why they went for that I'll never know.

It's had no more than 4 weeks on any official charts other than the UK and Ireland (and is currently charting only in the UK, Ireland, Bulgaria, Portugal and Australia, nowhere higher than #34 in any of those countries) :lol: As Rush said, it has a lot of high peaks due to its instant grat sales but it's decidedly not been 'huge' anywhere.
