Posted March 22, 201411 yr In the light of Aloe Blacc about to rack up a third hit and Christina Perri having just scored hers, I wonder who else people thought would be one hit wonders, but in fact they went on to have a few more, or even a long career after their debut smash. I'm not ashamed to admit that I even suspected that Katy Perry might have been one after I Kissed A Girl. And after Rihanna's second single didn't even make the top 10 I sort of expected her to go the way of Lumidee  Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen are definitely two others too, the wonders of a brilliant pop collaboration.
March 22, 201411 yr Definitely Katy Perry at first, but I took that back on the first llisten of Hot N Cold.
March 22, 201411 yr Macklemore & Ryan Lewis definitely, never thought they'd get another two big hits and one middling hit :o
March 22, 201411 yr Duke Dumont is another rather obvious one here! Basically all previously unknown dance acts who went on to have follow-up hits - Rudimental are another big one, I expected them to vanish into obscurity after 'Feel The Love' but they ended up having another MASSIVE #1 single and even a big #1 album.
March 22, 201411 yr I didn't expect Jason Mraz to get another long running hit after I'm Yours. Looks like he has that ubiquitous title of two hit wonder under his belt now. Christina Perri seemed to be heading the same way, but now Human's changed that. Owl City's a good one, although I do wonder if anything he does by himself will ever do anything like that.
March 22, 201411 yr To be topical, many people thought Kate Bush would disappear into obscurity as a one hit wonder after Wuthering Heights.
March 22, 201411 yr PSY This was my first thought too. fun. is another one, I knew 'We Are Young' would be massive but I didn't think they'd follow it up with another top 10 smash (and of course the lead singer went on to duet with Pink and get a massive hit) When 'Love Don't Let Me Go (Walking Away)' got big I thought David Guetta would be another one of those random dance acts who either have one small follow up or never see the charts again. How wrong was I?
March 22, 201411 yr Author I definitely thought it of Katy Perry and Rihanna. Robyn too. What, after Show Me Love hit the top 10 in 1998? In my mind that was one of THE great chart comebacks, although Blondie and Take That would also qualify for that, along with many others.
March 22, 201411 yr I don't think anyone expected Sia to have a second chart life post "Taken For Granted" (even though "Breathe Me" also had a life of its own, it was never a sizable chart hit).
March 22, 201411 yr Rihanna springs to mind, Pon De Replay was quirky and dance-hall and had she kept with that sound no doubt she'd have bombed with her 2nd album and never be seen again. Glad she adapted her sound as some of the best songs of the last 10 years have come from it.
March 22, 201411 yr Glad it wasn't just me with Katy Perry, probably the wrongest I've got any such prediction.
March 22, 201411 yr Definitely Katy Perry. I remember seeing the 'I Kissed A Girl' video and thinking she seemed completely normal looking/had no star quality and just got lucky with an attention-seeking viral hit-type of song. I wouldn't have been surprised if it had turned out to be a Rebecca Black situation where her family paid some company to make a music video for her and her friends or something. It's weird, I still think she looks like a different person in that video compared to all the others that followed. Got similar vibes from Carly Rae Jepson. But she turned out to be what, a three hit wonder? (so far anyway) Already mentioned as well but nobody screamed one hit wonder more than Psy IMO. Edited March 22, 201411 yr by Noahspike
March 22, 201411 yr Author Eurovision acts don't usually last beyond one hit if they've not been established before so I guess a lot of people can't have expected much more from Gina G and Precious, but they both achieved a few more hits! It's an odd platform to launch a new 'big' girlband if the latter were planned to be something bigger. I agree with the dance acts thing, how did DJ Sammy bag himself four top ten hits exactly? Also didn't expect Madison Avenue to have another top ten hit and tATu to have two more! Sara Bareilles is sadly still in one hit wonder territory but Brave is just waiting to smash, lingering outside the top 100 on iTunes. A TV slot or Heart playlisting would be all it would need to take off, but it doesn't seem to be on the horizon so it will likely just fade away.
March 22, 201411 yr To be topical, many people thought Kate Bush would disappear into obscurity as a one hit wonder after Wuthering Heights. Too right my room mate at uni was of the opinion she would have trouble following up Wuthering heights and I wasn't. I got Kylie wrong though - one off tv spinoff novelty act I thought. Then I became a fan 2 years later...
March 22, 201411 yr Going back a bit first, can't say I generally thought these as I either wasn't born or barely born but others might: * Nick Berry had a novelty #1 in 1986 on the back of being in EastEnders, almost certainly intended as a one-hit wonder but then he hits #2 out of nowhere in 1992 with the theme tune to Heartbeat. * The Prodigy started out doing a silly (if pretty epic) comedy rave tune sampling a 70s advert. I've seen at least one newsgroup post from the time calling them another example of a faceless rave act who'll never be heard of again. * Aqua! Everything about Barbie Girl screamed one-hit wonder. To get two more #1s and a host of other top 10 hits must have been very unexpected. * Anyone back in 1998 expected the Vengaboys to ever chart again after the fairly instrumental 'Up & Down'? * Oxide & Neutrino actually had a fairly sizeable hit career after their initial sampling-Casualty #1. And now for the ones I genuinely did think: * Darius (four more top 10 hits) * The Cheeky Girls (two more years worth of hits including two #3s) * Fast Food Rockers (two more hits!!) * Katy Perry (as mentioned lots already) *PSY And while it doesn't technically count, I thought Avicii scored his all-time biggest ever hit with 'Levels' and would probably sink back into obscurity afterwards - particularly as over the next year he only charted as high as #22. Then came 2013, and, erm, wow.
March 23, 201411 yr I'm going to say Train. Who'd have thought they'd come back and have a successful Top 40 hit with 'Hey Soul Sister' nine years after 'Drop Of Jupiter' went Top 10. Whilst 'Hey Soul Sister' never went Top 10, it spent quite a while in the Top 40 and of course they managed to get another Top 10 hit in 2012 with 'Drive By'.

I feared that Birdy would be a one-hit wonder, but fortunately not.
