March 23, 201411 yr SoundGirl I think they were called? Oh yess! I remember them, they had a song with Mann that just about scraped top 40 I think? Or did in midweeks. That came on so much on the music channels! Speaking of their song, Mann as well! Top 10 hit with Buzzin, only for follow up the Mack to go top 40... and then nothing since! March 23, 201411 yr Author Thunderbugs and Hepburn deserved so much more back in 1999 too. I guess the girlband with guitars thing never really caught on but Friends Forever and I Quit were such HUGE tunes! I know they were both being pushed quite hard but they obviously didn't connect. Agnes could have been far more than a one hit wonder if AATW hadn't done their usual '6 month gap' strategy and then farted out one of the album's more unmemorable moments as a second single.
March 23, 201411 yr I wish Deepest Blue had a longer career. Their two top ten hits were brilliant. Not so much their MOR singles though.

Speaking of their song, Mann as well! Top 10 hit with Buzzin, only for follow up the Mack to go top 40... and then nothing since! The SoundGirl/Mann track ('Don't Know Why') peaked at #45. Little Nikki from SoundGirl has gone on to have 2 more minor hits as a solo artist ('Wanna Go' with Maxsta peaked at #43 then her own 'Little Nikki Says' got to #53, still surprised the latter never took off as it was a rather good pop song and was even on an advert IIRC). Mann is actually one I could have said in the other thread, 'Buzzin' always felt like a bit of a random song to take off and Mann seemed like rather a non-entity of a rapper, quite surprised he even managed a second top 40 hit!

March 23, 201411 yr Polyphonic Spree Polyphonic Spree are wonderful but I think they have always been too different to achieve commercial success :(
March 23, 201411 yr Thought Diana Vickers was gonna be really big after X Factor, especially when she got a #1 single and album. But then she disappeared pretty much. I know she had two more top 40 hits after that, and has a second album, but on the whole she's not done as brilliantly as I expected.
March 23, 201411 yr Author I remember 2 other girl groups around that time Masai and Made In London Masai had two #1's in my personal chart  And Dirty Water by Made In London was a stunning pop song!
March 23, 201411 yr Another Marina case because he hasn't done badly at all but Tom Odell. James Arthur and Matt Cardle are another two, it seems to hurt male pop stars more to be associated with such a ready-made launchpad like a talent show or Critics' Choice.

I don't know about that - I think there's always other factors involved that are more influential. I still think James could have had a sustained career if it wasn't for his obnoxious personality, particularly on Twitter. (By the way, 'Get Down' charted at #151 if anyone's interested) Also, Olly is more successful than most females whose career began from a launchpad.

March 23, 201411 yr (By the way, 'Get Down' charted at #151 if anyone's interested) Already has a peak of #96 from cherrypicks though.
March 23, 201411 yr Not really a artist as a whole but I am really surprised how poorly Lily is doing this era, they all sound like hits too so I dont really understand it.
March 24, 201411 yr Not winning definitely helped him there. Possibly. Although, I think he's the kind of act whose appeal doesn't depend on any sort of perception of artistic authenticity. People knew him as an X Factor finalist after all, so I can't see how him winning would have resulted in much of a different outcome. As long as the music was the same/similar, I'd like to think he'd still have been successful. Already has a peak of #96 from cherrypicks though. Forgot about that, thanks. Still a bad showing for the release of a good single (IMO).
