The #1 predictions for Silly Boy were hilarious  I think it was because it's a song from a then unknown act like Lady Gaga who seemed to have a strong image and the song on a level with Just Dance, people thought maybe that would happen again. Evidently not, but admittedly I thought it would have done more than #148 or whatever its ridiculous peak was :(
I definitely thought Owl City would be huge! If you remember how much Justin Bieber became a superstar with a massive internet fanbase over the course of 2010, that's precisely what I thought would instead happen to Owl City. Not even close!

Their album sampler was E V E R Y T H I N G.

I wanted that album so bad. :( Still do.

I knew it'd never happen after what happened to 'I Wish' though.

A fair few good ones have been suggested so far. Clare Maguire's debut, for example, was fantastic, so I hope the second album can somehow do something. I'd liken her to Laura Mvula now, who interestingly enough is releasing an orchestral version of her album soon - R1 will hopefully jump on board.

All these singer/songwriters are a bit of cloudy territory - Michael Kiwanuka, Tom Odell, James Vincent McMorrow, Ben Howard and Vance Joy were/are just lucky to have had support, I wouldn't say that any of them not achieving #1s surprises me though.

Pretty incredible to think that as recently as summer 2010 you could have put Adele in this thread.

For them, having a top 20 single and some other chart hits is huge success. But agree, I think Kiwanuka and JVM won't ever touch top 40 again and their albums will be relative flops.

The world made a huge mistake. :( But seriously, I thought even after his follow-up singles to Fireflies did nothing that his next album coming out only a year after would be pretty big in terms of hits, and that was even WORSE for those somehow despite sounding like it was full of smashes (Good Time's album was the next one after that). I get the impression he's still very well known in internet circles but that just doesn't seem to translate into sales.

Many internet 'superstars' following in the footsteps of Justin Bieber could probably fall into this category, might be a bit early to start talking about the likes of Elyar Fox here but his hype seemed huge at the beginning of the year and that came to basically nothing with Do It All Over Again, although he probably has a second single in the works so we'll see.

I thought Carly Rae Jepsen would become a big popstar especially after Good Time brought Owl City another hit. I think it might have happened though if she'd gone down the route of Call Me Maybe rather than working with RedFoo and if she didn't release the incredibly basic This Kiss.

On a much smaller scale, Delilah seemed to be on the route of success after Go came out of nowhere and became a moderate hit since it was an unknown artist releasing OA/OS. I think the timing of Love You So's release damaged her career though, it should have been released in late Jan/Feb rather than during the Christmas rush.

Did anybody actually think Amelia Lily would be huge though? It seemed pretty evident to me that she was going to struggle to have another hit after You Give Me Joy.
I was shocked she even had one hit. She always seemed like a total overhyped non-entity on the show (I agreed with the decision to throw her out in the first week, if only it could have remained that way!) and 'You Bring Me Joy' was infuriatingly basic.
Of course "Somebody That I Used To Know" would always be tough to follow up but I thought that both Gotye and/or Kimbra would be able to chalk at least one more remotely significant hit.

VS: Really thought they'd be bigger than they were with their material (at least Big Brovaz "big"). Especially as their debut 'Love You Like Mad' went to #7 and it all started off so promising for them. 'Call U Sexy' failed to replicate its top 10 success and peaked at #11 and then 'Make It Hot' peaked at #29 which stopped all momentum going into their final single, a cover of 'If You Leave Me Now' (which was a popular song to cover at the time, by being on "the advert with the singing cherry"), and not making the top 75 at all, despite having various promo slots on all the kids favourite weekend TV shows like Cd:UK/TOTP Saturday etc..

(Marvin then went on to be in JLS)

Keisha White: I thought she'd be huge. 'Don't Care Who Knows' was the top 20 smash that never was and her cover of 'The Weakness In Me' is one of those songs that would probably peak at number 4 with a ridiculous 'Jar Of Hearts' sort of top 10 run if it was to be released now (instead of 5 weeks tops 75 with a #17 peak). I liked her last two singles too, 'Don't Mistake Me' & 'I Choose Life'. Poor girl. I think some serious money was thrown into her too, so that makes her floppage even more bizarre! :(

The 411: Two top 5 hits and it all started off so promising. Then after their biggest hit, they completely miss the top 20 with 'Teardrops' which peaked at number 23 and spent one week top 40 (5 top 75 though!)! It was a shame though, their first two singles were BRILLIANT but the album release was pushed back numerous times and I don't think it was ever released! They really were the Stooshe of the noughties!

I think 'If You Leave Me Now" was cancelled altogether?

I was a really big fan of The 411 at the time, and I didn't recall their album being a "pushed back numerous times" scenario! I did a bit of research on ukmix.org and looked back at some old release schedules. Their album didn't appear in the new release schedules at all until 16th August 2004, a week before they released 'Dumb'. At this point the album was supposedly due for an October release, and its title was listed as 'Dumb'. However, in the 13th September schedule, the title 'Between The Sheets' was confirmed and a release date of November 22nd was given - which is the date it actually ended up being released on. So relatively speaking it all went to plan with them in terms of scheduling... it just flopped hard, unfortunately. :(
