5 years ago I genuinely thought she'd be the sort of once in a lifetime popstar that remains at the top of their game for 20 years but this era just hasn't done anything at all.

Lots of people used to think that, but I can't understand why. Especially so early on in her career when Poker Face was a hit people were speaking like this. The songs are just typical pop songs (they sound out of place today, but back in 2008 that was the kind of music that was popular). I don't know why people expected so much from her just because she had two big chart hits close together.

I think a huge part of it is that people like Katy Perry and Rihanna have a lot more variety in their discographies, so people won't get tired of them so quickly. Rihanna didn't decide to release a dozen Umbrella clones, for example. When a style of music dominates, you can take the easy route and release songs of that style as singles again and again, but that hurts you in the long run since you get type-cast as that genre and you can't pull off anything else. Lady Gaga wouldn't be able to pull off a California King Bed or an Unconditionally. Lady Gaga wouldn't be able to pull off a Pour It Up or a Dark Horse. Not to mention, her fans wouldn't want songs like those from her, since she's ended up with a fanbase mainly consisting of pure pop fans. Look how disappointed most of them were when she released You and I as a single. They only want dance-pop from her.

The best thing for Lady Gaga to do now would be to take a break and come back at the end of the decade when pop music is dominating again. People like Pharrell and Justin Timberlake went on breaks when R&B music wasn't doing so well, and it worked out fine for them in the end. At least for people like Chris Brown, J-Lo, etc. they have another kind of music to fall back on from earlier in their careers, but Lady Gaga doesn't have that.

pre-order update

178. German Whip (feat. Big H & JME) - Meridian Dan

This song doing so well is still a bit surreal to me. It's not even been made commercial or anything, it really sounds just like it could be an "underground" grime song.

I think people have moved on to dance music in a big way and other aspects of dance genre, there are some unknown dance acts reaching #1 these days, that you wouldn't think they would have had a #1 for instance Storm Queen, Duke Dumont have scored 2 #1s in a year practically, dance music has really been ahead of other genres for the past 18 months or less. And other dance acts breaking through Mr. Probz, Sigma etc etc. It feels like fans are not following their favourite acts as much unless its a new artist is breaking out.

I think with Lady Gaga, she was a breath of fresh air when she first cracked the market with her first single and album, and now people are aware of her, hence why her singles and albums are not reaching strong sales, that's the way I see it. Some acts have been in the music industry for a long time and now they struggle unless your name is Daft Punk or Pharrell.

Sorry for going off topic, I just thought I throw that in, in reply to the above response. :P

Pardon? One chart hit officially doesn't mind you have an omnipresent presence with lots of different songs.

Katy Perry couldn't pull off an 'Unconditionally' either to be fair.

It would have taken a very gifted artist to pull off roping a six-syllable, unmusical, cacophonous word like 'unconditionally' into the explosive chorus and main hook of a mid-tempo power ballad.....so yeah, Katy Perry definitely wasn't the best person for the job.

Pharrell back in the top 5 again. Looks like he has a good chance of matching Gotye's 18 weeks top 10 (as tomorrow will be his 17th week and there are probably only 3 or 4 songs likely to make the top 10 from next week's releases).

John Martin is already down to #10, I can see this song having a very short chart run.

199. Meridian Dan - German Whip (feat. Big H & JME)

This has done really well today, Meridian Dan's appearance on Soccer AM this morning obviously must have played a big part. It would be a TRULY historic and unbelievable moment in music if this somehow got to #1 (of course we all know that it wont).

675. Lena - Stardust

1483. Lena - Stardust

:(

 21. Can't Rely On You - Paloma Faith

Looks like The Voice has benefited her a lot... last I saw it was somewhere in the 100s.

Strange that Paloma didn't perform 'Only Love Can Hurt Like This' as planned. Must have been a last minute change as she said on Twitter this morning that she'd perform her new single (although that's somewhat ambiguous).

Pre-orders released tonight:

26. Sigma - Nobody to Love

80. Iggy Azalea - Fancy (feat. Charli XCX)

107. The Vamps - Last Night

275. David Guetta & Showtek - Bad (feat. Vassy) [Radio Edit]

707. Jakwob - Somebody New (feat. Tiffani Juno)

744. Tich - Breathe in Breathe Out

796. The Saturdays - Not Giving Up (Radio Mix)

968. John Newman - Out of My Head (Club Edit)

1432. The Vamps - Last Night (Connor's Version)

Gwon Paloma. The true winner of The Voice clearly.

Kaiser Chiefs  to #22, I wonder if it's possible for them to scrape into tomorrow's top 40? (Probably not but it will be top 50 at least, rather an improvement on the #179 peak of their last lead single )

EDIT: Paloma now up to #10!

The Voice finalists:

35. Dear Darlin' - Sally Barker

39. And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going - Jermain Jackman

60. I Can't Make You Love Me - Jamie Johnson

79. From Both Sides Now - Sally Barker

90. To Love Somebody - Sally Barker

107. Whole of the Moon - Sally Barker

117. Everlong - Christina Marie

121. Bang Bang - Christina Marie

122. Without You - Jermain Jackman

195. Treasure - Jermain Jackman

196. Sex On Fire - Jamie Johnson

260. A Thousand Miles - Jamie Johnson

1336. Sleepy Eyes - Sally Barker

1490. Another Train - Sally Barker

Lol at Jermain not even having the highest song. Looks like he's going to do even worse than Leanne... (I assume 'And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going' is meant to be his 'winner's single'?)

I wonder why Sally seems to have more songs on iTunes than any of the others  Unless the others have other tracks on sale that are just outside the top 1,500 somehow.

Sally has other songs on iTunes from before The Voice

But her 4 highest songs are all from The Voice aren't they? While the rest only have 2 or 3.
