This worked coz they realised there is NO POINT in trying to flog a dead horse.. 'Perfect Illusion' was doing nothing and they used an instant grat to get people invested in the album, which they promoted a lot instead and it's paid off.

So happy for her and this album. Her legs will be a lot stronger for her in the US than UK right now, but come promo time for the UK with MR, I am confident album sales will be great for her! Def got 300k in total at least imo.

Had this on last night in the apartment and it finally came together for me. I liked it when it was released but now I find myself going back to it all the time while I kind of dipped in and out the week it was released.

The bridge and outro to 'Hey Girl' are gorgeous. That's the biggest grower on the album for me. 'Perfect Illusion', 'Joanne', 'A-Yo', 'John Wayne', 'Angel Down' and 'Dancing In Circles' are all standouts. I think the only song I probably won't miss is 'Come To Mama'...

I much prefer this to Artpop, which had a few bangers but was such a mess. This is far more polished.

Her opening American sales are impressive and well done to her, she is far from washed up just yet.
Wow that is a huge drop!!

No that's impressive! It's not going to do over 100k in week 2, she's not Adele.

The album has broken the record for most days for a female on top of the worldwide iTunes album chart (2016).

It flew down the UK charts!!

Like Britne my her career willnlast longer in US Brazil and Mexico.

She's still top 20... this is with NO promo yet... it's doing perfectly fine and as far as 2nd week drops in 2016 go, its holding up fantastically. Now please, shut up. It's actually doing my head in, and I don't want to put you on ignore or avoid this topic, coz I wanna keep up! But it's seriously off putting. Whether you're deliberately trolling or not, it's annoying!

Joanne had a 64% drop compared to a 76% drop for ARTPOP in the UK, so it's holding up better.

I hope there is promo coming this way (or for 'Million Reasons' to slay on radio) otherwise I do fear how the album will perform from this point on.

LADY GAGA’S JOANNE IS A HIT BECAUSE IT’S REAL

This week, Lady Gaga landed her fourth No. 1 album with Joanne, making her the female artist with the most No. 1 albums this decade.

Which is huge! And well-deserved — Joanne has been rightfully lauded by critics and listeners. One of the most interesting things about both the record and Gaga’s newest persona is how the latter is almost nonexistent. For what seems like the first time in nearly 10 years, the singer’s music and performances are simultaneously stripped down, personal, and energetic. Her live shows on the limited-engagement Dive Bar tour were a return to her stomping grounds, with Gaga playing small shows at small venues in the same way she did years ago. Only now we know who she is and what she’s capable of, and that makes her latest incarnation even more special.

As the 2010s have progressed, the flawlessness we once demanded from our pop stars has lost its luster. We’ve clued into the grueling realities of boy-band stardom and reconsidered our investment in solo superstars’ radiant perfection. These days we celebrate humanness in our heroes, whether via the painful honesty of Beyoncé’s Lemonade or through Adele’s recent revelations about her postpartum depression. So it makes sense that watching Lady Gaga rely solely on her talent has resonated in such a profound way. Where she could tour stadiums, spring for special effects, and adorn herself in even more meat, she’s chosen not to (at least for now). Instead, she’s just like us: sweaty, dancing, vulnerable, and alive, celebrating her most personal album by evoking unforced, unfaked emotions.

...

That kind of honesty can be a lot to ask from artists, but it creates real stakes in their work. We crave a deeper connection with musicians, and we pay closer attention to their music when they give us that connection. We want to feel like they’re our friends — even if we’ll never really know if said realness is part of a larger, less obviously stagey persona. Although, for the record, whether it’s sorta sensationalized or completely legit, I’m totally down to be friends with Joanne.

I love Joanne don't get me wrong, it's my second favourite album of hers behind Born This Way. The album is superb and her most cohesive work since the TFM; my only problem is the bonus tracks. The Work Tapes as raw and emotional as they are, are sonically fine but I just think they would have worked better as B-Sides. Whilst 'Just Another Day' screams oldschool 'Second Time Around/Again Again/Vanity' Gaga demos to me and overall brings the quality of the album down for me personally. I think a simple 12 Track affair with only one standard edition (like below) would have been much more effective & complementary.

01. Diamond Heart

02. Ayo

03. Perfect Illusion

04. John Wayne

05. Sinner's Prayer

06. Dancin' in Circles

07. Hey Girl ft. Florence Welch

08. Come to Mama

09. Grigio Girls

10. Million Reasons

11. Angel Down

12. Joanne

...with 4/5 singles?? Preferably (and in this order): Million Reasons, Hey Girl, Dancin' in Circles, Come to Mama and Diamond Heart ...either way she's added twelve remarkable songs to her already impressive repertoire and for that I'm grateful. Can't wait for the MR video coming later this month!
