Posted April 19, 201411 yr From The Mail On Sunday: It is, perhaps, the best loved game show in Britain’s TV history – fondly remembered by millions for its cheesy catchphrases and conveyor belt of less-than-thrilling prizes. At its peak in the late 1970s, The Generation Game pulled in an astonishing 20 million viewers every Saturday evening, first with Bruce Forsyth at the helm and then Larry Grayson. And now the show is set to make a remarkable return . . . with comedienne Miranda Hart taking on the role of presenter. The BBC plans to screen the new version within a year, and a pilot episode is already taking shape, The Mail on Sunday understands. ‘Everyone is excited about this happening,’ said a BBC source who asked not to be named. ‘Miranda is a great fan of the original show and she has made no secret of her admiration for Sir Bruce Forsyth, the show’s very first host. Miranda and The Generation Game could be a match made in telly heaven.’ Hart, 41, who has established herself as one of the most popular family entertainers in Britain with her sitcom Miranda and her role in hit drama Call The Midwife, will become the first female host of The Generation Game. BBC bosses say the idea is at the early stages and nothing has been formally confirmed, but they believe the combination of the show’s format and Hart’s family-friendly persona will prove ratings gold. The star herself is a huge fan of the show and sang its praises in an interview she did with Forsyth last year. She said: ‘Bruce is too modest to say this but I am going to say it for him. During the 1970s the Generation Game was getting over 20 million viewers every week and my family were among them. I loved it. It is one of the greatest game shows ever.’ She even defended the programme when Forsyth himself said it might now be considered ‘old hat’. Edited April 19, 201411 yr by Common Sense
April 19, 201411 yr Author I'm not sure about this as I don't like Miranda Hart but many people do. I'm old enough to remember the original series with Bruce Forsyth and the conveyor belt. Edited April 19, 201411 yr by Common Sense
April 19, 201411 yr I'm not sure about this as I don't like Miranda Hart but many people do. I'm old enough to remember the original series with Bruce Forsyth and the conveyor belt. Me neither i'm not a big Miranda Hart fan but this just doesn't suit her at all.
May 14, 201411 yr I'm not a big fan of the Generation Games (although loved it when I was a kid), but I think Miranda Hart's hilarious so she could bring a new lease of life to the show. I just hope it doesn't detract from her other work. I think she's a brilliant writer of her own material and hope she has a hand in any GG script she's given.
May 19, 201411 yr BBC light entertainment bosses seem to be trying to trying to recapture the 70s/80s classics of late but with current and universally popular hosts. Look at Rob Brydon presenting what is basically Blankety Blank at the moment. I loved the old shows - the Generation Game with Bruce (2nd time around) was must-viewing...far less so when Jim Davidson took over...and I'd probably watch Britain's Got Talent if it changed to adopt the 3-2-1 format. Anyway, we'll see. Got to be better than "Epic Win", the wall dodging game with Anton Du Beke and that weird show about not scaring the hare.
May 19, 201411 yr she'll be good, the real stars are the public, and Miranda's a people person, affable and likeable, and will have fun without belittling them or being cruel. She's also very good with off the cuff remarks and knows her TV history. Yay!
May 19, 201411 yr knows her TV history. Yay! She certainly does - I love how they reinstated the Croft / Perry-era "you have been watching" to the Miranda series.
May 19, 201411 yr Hole In The Wall presented by Dale Winton was comedy GOLD. Anton du Smugface ruined it sadly and then it (rightly) got cancelled.
May 19, 201411 yr Talking of Dale Winton, I miss Supermarket Sweep and tuning in each week to see how fluorescent orange Dale was this week!

May 19, 201411 yr You can always tell the early one's as Dale is a normal colour rather than radioactive orange.
May 19, 201411 yr You can always tell the early one's as Dale is a normal colour rather than radioactive orange. Similarly, you can date episodes of Pointless by the size of Alexander Armstrong's bald patch
