Posted May 6, 201411 yr Imagine going back in time to January 2010 and telling your younger self the musical delights (and low-lights) of the next four years and more. What revelations would have been the hardest to believe? Here's a couple to start: * Lady Gaga has one more number 1 - Telephone - and never has another #1 ever again. * Dizzee Rascal and Robbie Williams made a song together. It only got to #5 and spent four weeks top 40. * There's a future million-seller sung completely in a foreign language by a 34 year old Korean rapper. And loads more!
May 6, 201411 yr That Pharrell Williams would have spawned 3 of the decade's biggest selling songs. That Girls Aloud - who were massive in 2009, would come back and nobody would care, going out with a whisper That The Saturdays would still be going.
May 6, 201411 yr Paloma Faith would still be successful on her third album Florence + the Machine would have scored a Number 1 single Pitbull would have a million selling single A girl group would have won the X Factor and were not dropped after their first album Adele would have taken over the world Nelly Furtado would return without anyone caring Kaiser Chiefs would have another Top 40 single and a Number 1 album Edited May 6, 201411 yr by Rabbit Heart
May 6, 201411 yr Sophie Ellis-Bextor having a top 5 album that spends 14 weeks in the top 75 Daft Punk have a #1 single that soars past a million. Jennifer Lopez has a huge selling #1 hit (at that point I never thought she'd see the top 10 again) Lady Gaga's career would be over within 4 years Madonna would have two pre-album singles scraping the top 40 and top 75 respectively
May 6, 201411 yr James Blunt achieving two further platinum albums, as well as a consistent selling, #4-peaking radio hit four years later. Olly Murs not only surviving past his debut album but increasing his sales with each release (I did think he'd do better than Joe though). Duffy's rapid career decline. May 6, 201411 yr Daft Punk selling a million is surely the most surprising thing to happen since Kings of Leon sold a million (twice).
May 6, 201411 yr * Florence Welch will team up with Calvin Harris for not one, but TWO number one singles. * Robin Thicke, that guy who had that one #11 hit back in 2007, will have one of the biggest songs of the decade. * U2, Christina Aguilera, Madonna and Britney Spears will all struggle to enter the Top 40 on their own, but Pharrell Williams of "Drop It Like It's Hot" fame will have three million sellers all in the same year. * Disney will release a soundtrack that is a huge seller, especially in the US, and Beyoncé releases an album that catches everyone by surprise yet features a music video for every single song. * Cee-Lo green, half of the duo Gnarls Barkley that released "Crazy" in 2006 will return solo and release a single featuring the F-Word that stays in the UK Top 75 for 34 weeks and 48 weeks on the US Hot 100. * Etta James' "Somethings Got A Hold On Me" from 1962 will be sampled on two hits in the Top 5 at the same time. * Miley Cyrus, the disney star from "Hannah Montana" will become very slutty and sing about drugs.
May 6, 201411 yr * Miley Cyrus, the disney star from "Hannah Montana" will become very slutty and sing about drugs. Because past Disney child stars have always remained so well-behaved!
May 6, 201411 yr considering what the charts were like back in 2009-10, I wouldn't have expected songs like Somebody That I Used To Know or We Are Young to be #1 hits over here just a few years later. Or that 'deep house' music would become somewhat of a chart force a few years after that
May 6, 201411 yr Maroon 5 having a #1 single and an ENORMOUS selling #2 single. Kesha having 2 more #1's JLS' rapid career decline Glee Cast being irrelevant to the chart after the first 2 seasons were so successful
May 6, 201411 yr * Lady Gaga has one more number 1 - Telephone - and never has another #1 ever again. Do you have a crystal ball? Please PM me Saturday's winning lottery numbers! No-one can say that she definitely won't have anoither chart-topper but I too think it's unlikely. Edited May 6, 201411 yr by Common Sense
May 6, 201411 yr as well as the obvious ones (Adele, Pharrell, Maroon 5, Psy etc.) • House music would become a major chart force • 'Gold Dust' would get a vocal remix and give DJ Fresh a big hit, and he would follow that up with 2 number one singles. • Tinchy Stryder and Chipmunk would start to lose relevance in 2011 and be completely forgotten about by 2013 • LMFAO would get 2 massive-selling singles • Two Australian dance acts would get a #1 single by sampling a 50s Italian song • 2013 would give us a UK #1 single which has no more than 8 words in it (we're the f*cking animals… we're the f*cking animals)
May 6, 201411 yr I certainly never expected the third best selling single of the decade to come from two then 'has beens' like Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera, that was one of the most surprising for me. OneRepublic getting a massive selling no.1 would also be up there, and obvs Adele taking over the world as well. Lady Gaga's decline has been really surprisingly rapid too, she was absolutely enormous in 2009 and there were (stupid admittedly) comparisons to Madonna/Beyonce, but just five years on and her status is fast fading. Although to be picky, predicting the future state of music is so unpredictable that it's hard to even have expectations of what will happen, because literally anything can happen, it's kinda why I love it. You could be certain Postman Pat would never have a number 1 single, will it happen? who knows... Edited May 6, 201411 yr by Chez Wombat
May 6, 201411 yr The main thing I can think of is that I'd never have thought the album market would get in such a state that we rejoice at the sight of a #1 album managing 40k+ and more than just the Top 5 selling 10k or that an album could get to #1 with less than 10k. Some points already made in the thread that I agree with is Gaga's decline, the massive success of Adele, and the big returns for the likes of Daft Punk, OneRepublic and Maroon 5. Ooh and Steps getting a #1 album was definitely a shocker, especially with a greatest hits!
May 6, 201411 yr The Saturdays would ever get a #1 Nicki Minaj would have close to a million selling single and sell out by going commercial
May 6, 201411 yr Kaiser Chiefs getting a second #1 album (for 2 weeks and all!) and a top 40 single is definitely the most surprising thing in this thread for me so far. A few others: AC/DC would get a first top 10 hit single (back then it looked like AC/DC's songs would never even be *available* again), a pure rap song with the word 'Niggas' in its title would become a high selling top 10 hit, Westlife's final single would miss the top 30 entirely, a 'fake' version of a song would make the official top 10 (again back then it was implausible that such a song would even make the chart due to them being excluded from the chart at the time).
May 6, 201411 yr The success of Maroon 5 is the obvious one. I NEVER thought they'd chart highly again and then they had that million seller and a no.1. Easily the best thing to happen this decade.
May 6, 201411 yr The success of Maroon 5 is the obvious one. I NEVER thought they'd chart highly again and then they had that million seller and a no.1. Easily the best thing to happen this decade. I can remember being on holiday back in Summer '11 and my parents would always have Radio 2 on in the car and the two songs I would hear all the time (and loved) was this and Mel C's 'Think About It' and I thought to myself that it was such a shame these won't become hits. Seems I was half right! :P As Bre mentioned, a fake song going Top 10 was definitely a shock! I was also amazed by the consistently high sales for 'Blurred Lines' and 'Get Lucky', forgetting the artists or the sound of the songs. It was just unbelievable, especially 'Blurred Lines' selling between 190k-200k for 3 weeks! Not to mention 'Let Her Go' and 'La La La' being massive at the same time - it was like the first third of 2001 with the likes of 'Uptown Girl', 'It Wasn't Me', 'Pure and Simple' and 'Whole Again' selling so much.
