Posted July 10, 201410 yr http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/christian-..._b_5571478.html Interesting article in the Huffington Post - I actually agree with most of the comments. Ten Reasons Why Kylie's Career Has Gone Wrong! It says something when the fiercest most loyal fans start to question their icon's actions. But sadly, that's exactly what pop superstar Kylie Minogue - my all time favourite icon - is currently experiencing, as her 27 year pop career lurches toward disaster following the poor performance of her latest album Kiss Me Once. So what's gone so sensationally wrong? Why can't Kylie produce hits like she used to anymore? Why has the nation fallen out of love with her? Has her new management team Roc Nation royally messed up her career? Should Kylie merely kick off her disco stillies and put her feet up once and for all? Here are my ten reasons why I think Kylie's career is in trouble! 1) The music has lost its way. While there have been numerous classic corkers like All the Lovers, Spinning Around, In Your Eyes, Slow and of course Can't Get You Out Of My Head, most of her recent albums have had more dodgy fillers than Katie Price and Chloe Sims put together. 2) Kylie is producing records that are too young for her. That's not to say that Kylie can't belt out a corking disco stomper, but realistically, the kids who hang off the every word of Ellie Goulding, Rita Ora or the ghastly Jessie J aren't going to buy into a 40something singing about love and sex. Meanwhile, her devoted fans of 27 years are non-plussed by the generic bland pop numbers. 3) Can't Get You Out Of My Head was the BEST and WORST thing to happen to Kylie's career. CGYOOMH was without a doubt one of those sensational global smash dance tracks that every artist dreams of. But this was also the beginning of the end. Believing Kylie was now a dancefloor diva, her record company decided that dancefloor stompers were the way to go, not understanding that that one classic track was a one off. And while In Your Eyes and Love At First Sight were ace, the dreary Come In To My World and the rest of the Fever album and subsequent albums were wishy washy time wasters. 4) Disastrous release strategy When Into The Blue was played on the radio for the first time back in January, fans practically combusted with joy. But instead of an instant release, fans had to wait three torturous months, which meant that by the time it was available on iTunes, most of the fans had already downloaded the track illegally. The outcome? A dodgy number 12. Same story with her non-album track Crystallise, which was released two weeks after it was premiered online, peaking at a deadly dull 60. 5) Releasing an album sampler ahead of release. If the album had been sensational, this would have been one of the greatest ideas in the world. But as we all heard for ourselves, Kiss Me Once should've been renamed Played It Once. 6) Poorly chosen album tracks. Normally the best tunes make the final tracklist, so why was stand out track Sleeping With The Enemy only on the deluxe version when it should have actually been a single, while her brilliant charity track Crystallise didn't even make the cut. Utter madness! 7) The Sexercise Debacle. Loathed universally by the fans, the label insanely decided that this turgid track was the perfect vehicle to promote the album. Yikes! Worst still, the video featuring Kylie writhing embarrassingly on a gym ball surrounded by a bunch of sweaty girls half her age, look liked soft core porn. Unsurprisingly, it neither appealed to teenage boys who don't fancy their mum's mates or gays who'd have preferred to see buff studs. 8) I Was Gonna Cancel. A so-so album track, this was unleashed as a single after co-writer Pharrell Williams' Happy and Sing, collab with Ed Sheeran topped the charts! Sadly, his Midas touch was missing and the song bombed at 59. Don't even get us started on the dreadful promo clip. 9) Management just don't know what to do with her. Kylie signed to Jay Z's Roc Nation after almost 30 years with Terry Blamey. The first fruit of their labour was a tuneless dance teaser called Skirt, which featured dirty lyrics about her skirt, er, coming down. Not the kind of track we want to hear from out Disney Princess of Pop Kylie. Oh no, it was far better suited to crotch flashing shock-popper Madonna or grubby Rihanna! Bottom line. Kylie will always be loved by the gays and yet her record label still try to alienate her core fanbase. And fans will NEVER forgive Parlophone for not releasing Your Disco Needs You because it was 'too gay'! Er, hello? 10) Kylie has too many fingers in pies. Since Kylie joined Parlophone, she has been redeveloped as a brand with a home furnishings range, a kids book (er, who's her audience again?) and coffee table books about her fashions! Kylie, spend more time finding good songs and leave the money-making spin offs to The Saturdays! Edited July 10, 201410 yr by Regina
July 10, 201410 yr I gave the OP a tidy since it looked really messy before. Anyway; This is basically just a "let's bash Kylie" article then with hardly anything being true. Releasing Head ruining her career? Really? Also; Most artists release album samplers though In what planet is Kylie a Disney Princess of Pop? she is hardly Giselle singing while doing the washing up. Kylie as a brand is hardly a bad thing, it's not like she is hand sewing all the bedding or printing all the books.
July 10, 201410 yr 7) The Sexercise Debacle. Loathed universally by the fans, the label insanely decided that this turgid track was the perfect vehicle to promote the album. Yikes! "Loathed universally by fans" - this person's been around a fair bit then if he knows every single Kylie fan has voiced their [negative] opinion of the song on an internet forum / blog / website. :o (the song is fabulous though, so...) "writhing embarrassingly on a gym ball" - lol, okay. "or gays who'd have preferred to see buff studs" - probably one of the most ill-informed points of the whole article: 4VPCprF3K1k
July 10, 201410 yr I do agree with a some points here, and there's some where I don't necessarily agree with but can see where they are coming from, but the whole of point 7 about 'Sexercize' is just WRONG, and 'Skirt' was great! I particularly agree with points 4, 5 and 6 - we all know how badly managed the single releases were; the album sample, like I mentioned earlier today, didn't really get me excited; and it is odd that 'Sleeping with the Enemy' and 'Crystallize' didn't get on the standard tracking list when they do sound better than quite a few songs that were on there).
July 10, 201410 yr The writer is correct in places, but there's way too much exaggeration in pretty much every point! I understand it's a writing technique to get your point across but there's such a thing as too much.
July 10, 201410 yr Releasing Head ruining her career? Really? I see what they are trying to say here - that Parlophone think they can get another massive success if they try to recreate 'Head' with every release (and according to the article, failing to make anything any good) - but to be honest I don't think anything else released since has sounded much like 'Head' and in fact there's been several songs that I believe are a lot better than it. So I get the point, I just really don't agree! :P
July 11, 201410 yr I do not agree with the cant get you out of my head point but many of the others are true, especially in relation to the Kiss Me Once era.
July 12, 201410 yr In fairness, the second video for 'Sexercise' is horrendously cringetastic and borderline creepy. If a Kylie fan wants to see buff guys there are better things to watch
July 12, 201410 yr I do agree with some of those points like the poorly chosen album tracks, especially on X with dire tracks like "Nu-Di-Ty", "Cosmic" and "Sensitized" should have all stayed in the vaults and in their place should be "White Diamond", "Cherry Bomb", "Come Down" and "Magnetic Electric" and "Rippin Up The Disco" should have not being bonus tracks and should have been on the standards. Even on the Ultimate Kylie "Giving You Up" should have been taken off and "Made Of Glass" should have been on there and released as a single instead. And I don't agree about the "Fever" album, I thought that it was brilliant but I do agree about releasing that dreary "Come Into My World" as a single, the title track or even the bonus track "Tightrope" would have been a million times better. And I do agree with "Crystalize" and "Into The Blue" they both should been instantly released and therefore could have done a lot better. "I Was Gonna Cancel" I don't think it's a terrible song, but the video did ruin it though, if it had a better video and remixed it a bit, then it could have done wonders. I don't agree about the "Sexercise" as I thought she looked great in the video, okay the song isn't brilliant, but not awful. I think she needs for the next album to do more personal stuff, instead of singing songs too young for her, maybe something a bit more grown up and maybe something to help her vocals shine a bit more better, coz songs like "Flower" she sounded beautiful.
July 12, 201410 yr The problem is the music just isn't as good as it should be, both her latest studio albums are a bunch of average retreads of the 'Kylie sound' with no originality, excitement or joy surrounded by a handful (and that's being generous) of great pop songs. I think Aphrodite burnt people a lot, 'X' was mishandled from the off (2 Hearts wasted all the good will towards her comeback post cancer) but at least the album had some pop stonkers on it and the whole thing felt like a vibrant popstar (despite the botox face), Aphrodite and Kiss Me Once just feel so lazy and boring, like she's going through the motions as much anything.
July 13, 201410 yr To cut all the bullshit, in the commercial sense she was fucked whatever she did from the outset anyway. Radio won't play her, casual music purchasers do not care, she's a popstar from last generation.
July 13, 201410 yr I loved Come Into My World :( I thought Fever was an excellent album on the whole too. I think Body Language is where it started to unravel personally, to follow up to such a strong era with a collection of b-sides was not an ideal move. For it to only get to No.6 and sell 300k or whatever after the massive Fever was a big comedown so she managed to recover quite well with Ultimate Kylie all things considered. But Aly's right, short of a miracle, once in a lifetime sort of song like Cher's Believe (I believe Kylie has already had this 'moment' with CGYOOMH), she's not going to experience much chart success again. She has little appeal to teens, who dictate the singles chart.

She has little appeal to teens, who dictate the singles chart. I agree with your comments that it all started to go wrong with body language. After the mass appeal of Fever, Body Language just didn't strike the same cord although I personally think its a good album. It felt like an attempt to appeal more to the American market rather than doing what she does best. Ultimate did well but then X was weird mix-mash of stuff - similar to kiss me once. She did redeem herself with Aphrodite but sadly it may have been too late. I think the only way she can have some kind of recovery is to leave Parlophone and start a fresh with a new label. She is unlikely to have the same level of success as in the past due to other factors which go against her now like age and radio stations not supporting her but part of the problem is highlighted well in the article - she needs to release something more relevant to her age rather than trying to keep sounding like a 20 yo old again. Stuff like sexercise was weird, very embarrassing and desperate - Kylie seems to have lost sight of her way in my view.
July 23, 201410 yr I believe the point about CGYOOMH is basically that while the song took her career to new heights, by being such a huge hit it also doomed her to spend the rest of her career attempting to replicate it. I don't think it's really true... CGYOOMH isn't something I think she's been trying to cling onto at all. She definitely recognises it as her most iconic song (see her performing the Abbey Roads version on X Factor) but if anything the "gay disco diva Kylie" template was set with 'Spinning Around' and later on, 'I Believe In You'. I would really struggle to connect any material post-Body Language with CGYOOMH.
July 24, 201410 yr I dont think she ever tried to replicate Cant Get You Out Of My Head, multiple artists get that mega huge hit but fade away shortly after,Kylie may not have had a hit that size again she has had many many hits since including a number 1 single. All the Lovers which was 8-9 years after cgyoomh it ended up one of high on her list of her best selling singles.
