July 17, 201411 yr I swear you work for them or something. :P I do agree that they chose it by brand and by name, and they should have just said that rather than the nonsense about musical merit and judging on a case by case basis...
July 17, 201411 yr Lol I wish I worked on bbc radio would be unreal!! If it is the case then I'm glad they pick rihanna over Nicole as she's more original and her songs are generally better. Sorry for calling these artists brands it just helps me distinguish between them and artists like Sam Smith or Jessie Ware who are more authentic in terms of writing their music etc.
July 18, 201411 yr What annoys me with the Radio 1 playlisting is that they can't admit when they've been wrong about a track. Nicole's single is obviously liked else it wouldn't be number 2 in the midweeks. But if they still refuse to give it airplay, it'll just be a flash in the pan hit. If I was in charge of the playlist meeting, I'd be like 'OK here's a track that's number 2 in the midweeks and still top 10 on iTunes and we're not playing it. Why?'.
July 18, 201411 yr And the rebuttal to that argument, as always, is that that is not what the R1 playlist is solely based on so saying that they're 'wrong' is fundamentally incorrect.
July 18, 201411 yr There have been plenty of times when they've backtracked when something hit #1/2 without their support and they playlisted it for the next week. I can Think of Alexandra Burke - Elephant, The Vamps - Can We Dance, Amelia Lily - Bring Me Joy (Not 100% on that one), 5SOS - She Looks so Perfect
July 18, 201411 yr So they sometimes do 'admit they were wrong' (to use Adam's words) and they sometimes don't. It's almost as if they playlist things based on more than just how well they're doing in the charts ~
July 18, 201411 yr And the rebuttal to that argument, as always, is that that is not what the R1 playlist is solely based on so saying that they're 'wrong' is fundamentally incorrect. Oh I totally understand that their playlist has more industry politics surrounding it. I'm saying that when reviewing the playlist if there's a song like Nicole's which they've previously overlooked that clearly has public interest then why not think about playing it, even if it's just C-List for a week. Surely the biggest radio station in the country should be playing the most popular, current tracks no? There have been plenty of times when they've backtracked when something hit #1/2 without their support and they playlisted it for the next week. I can Think of Alexandra Burke - Elephant, The Vamps - Can We Dance, Amelia Lily - Bring Me Joy (Not 100% on that one), 5SOS - She Looks so Perfect In which case I stand corrected!
July 18, 201411 yr How do you know that they haven't 'thought about' playing it? :P And they DO play the most popular current tracks. People on here always vilify them for ignoring the occasional song (invariably female pop) and ignore the fact that 95% of hits *are* playlisted by Radio 1. They probably support chart music just as much if not more than the likes of Capital (who play 'all the hits' except for anything even vaguely not pop or dance) but also find time to support new artists and different genres. All of that isn't suddenly undone because they aren't giving airtime to the latest single from a well-established name (and when Nicole is getting support from Capital FM which probably has more of an impact on the chart than R1 these days I really don't get why people are so caught up about R1 not playlisting it). Anyway this is the last time I'm going to allow myself to be involved in an argument about this as I'm sure you're all bored of seeing me repeat myself every few weeks. I'll just let you all continue to see mr_aly repeating himself instead :heehee:
July 18, 201411 yr And me lol!! Final point as i said above even if its not playlisted some songs get plays on the review show, Sunday nights teenager show and others! Edited July 18, 201411 yr by steve201
July 19, 201411 yr Radio 1 has a legacy of being up their own arse a little, so the Nicole situation isn't a massive surprise (the song is rather shite but I digress...) As back as 2002, they snubbed anything from the All Around The World dance label (Flip & Fill, Milk Inc etc) as it was considered too naff, despite the big top ten hits they had.
July 19, 201411 yr Which kind of makes what they say in that article about it being on "musical merit" and a "case by case basis" complete rubbish. With pop stars, I agree with you that it does tend to be "all or nothing". A pop star will either get all their songs playlisted or none of their songs. However, with many other artists, it does seem to be on a "case by case" basis. If you look at the playlist history of a lot of rappers or dance producers, they will have a song playlisted, then the follow-up won't be playlisted, then a later single will get playlisted again, and so on. There are a few like Eminem or Calvin Harris which get every song playlisted no matter what, but if you look at other artists like Drake, Pitbull, they get some of their singles playlisted and others not. Even Dizzee Rascal's latest single didn't get playlisted (probably because it was a shitty RedOne production), but I'm sure they'll playlist one of his songs in the future, so it obviously is on a case by case basis for some artists. Also, there is the fact that Nicole's latest songs are things older people would like, so not very useful to Radio 1 who are trying to get more younger listeners and lose older listeners. I know lots of songs actually on the playlist fit into that category too, but still, that's not going to help Nicole. Edited July 19, 201411 yr by Eric_Blob
July 23, 201411 yr Lily Allen doesn't seem to be happy about Radio one's playisting choices. http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/news/a58...~oKQsRbE1xm06Dh Lily Allen has questioned BBC Radio 1 over its playlisting decisions. Speaking about the station's decision to drop her latest single from their main playlist, she said that "the truth is nobody knows what the f**k they're doing". She continued: "They can pretend they've got a formula that works and [that]they 'know' they're exactly in control of the game but they're just not. No-one knows." Allen also spoke about sexism in the music industry, telling PressPLAY: "The music industry is run mainly by elder males… It sits better with them to be able to assert their power and control over something that they see as weak and I think they probably see women as weak." She added: "People don't really like being confronted with the truth very much and I'm not really one of those people that's going to say everything's great. "I don't think our obsession with celebrity culture is very healthy... Maybe some kids will hear what I say and think, 'I want to do something else'."
July 23, 201411 yr Someone complaining about the Radio 1 playlist after they *were* playlisted, that's a new one.
July 23, 201411 yr I have a feeling this may be due to the fact that URL Badman was dropped before getting to the A-List. Honestly, I think she's still lucky to be playlisted currently (as much as I love her)
July 23, 201411 yr Someone complaining about the Radio 1 playlist after they *were* playlisted, that's a new one. Very odd, if it weren't for Radio 1 this era would have been a complete failure for her, they're the only ones who properly supported her. They playlisted ALL her singles, including having two on the A-list at the same time at the end of last year. Yes, it was slightly premature that they took URL Badman off a week earlier than they usually would, but it's not unheard of, and they needed to make way for newer music. In this case she needs to be quiet. I usually agree with most of the sexist and ageist claims of the R1 playlist, but why is she getting herself in trouble with the only major support she has?!
July 23, 201411 yr I don't get why she's complaining. It's no secret that her album and latest singles have really under performed, maybe that's the reason why R1 are dropping you from the playlist prematurely :o It's not R1 being sexist. She should at least be happy that it got on there in the first place. I bet now she's said this R1 will snub her future releases though, that's when she has more of a right to complain. I think she's just looking for someone to blame for her floppage.

Honestly, I think she's still lucky to be playlisted currently (as much as I love her) Same, I bloody love her but she shouldn't complain considering 4454545 singles from this album has been playlisted.

Just saw the interview video online and actually at the end of the interviews she did thank Radio one for all the support they have done for her and things before commenting on Capital and how they haven't really supported her much, so I'm not sure whether it was a joke or not. -k6CT9WETn0 Edited July 23, 201411 yr by Let Go For 2nite

Curses DigitalSpy and their misleading reporting.
July 23, 201411 yr From the actual quotes, she hasn't actually said anything about her music and Radio 1, she's just talking in general. The article just seems to have twisted it to sound like she's complaining because they've dropped her single.
