Theres alot of talk about this in the itunes thread this week due to Ed Sheeran Thinking Out Loud storming to No1 currently with single 3 from his 750k selling album!

Anyone want to put a definate list in this topic and the reasons why it got to No1 - e.g Massive popularity, X Factor performance, Re-Release etc

I will start things off with Labrinth - Beneath Your Beautiful - Single 6 off the album released in April 2012, stormed to No1 from outside the top 40 after an X Factor performance with Emeli Sande

20/10/2012 Labrinth Featuring Emeli Sande Beneath Your Beautiful 1 71-{1}R(2)-2-2-4-4-4-4-8-11-10-10-15-20-27-32-32-30-35-40-42-45-58-71-69R(8)->25

The Lazy Song could also be put under Video Effect, I remember everyone talking about it at the time!

What was the lead single of the album Toxic was on?

Coldplay - Paradise (X factor performance)

The XF performance only got it to #2. It reached #1 due to the gift card effect 2 weeks later.

Also 'Meet Me Halfway' was the BEP #1 that got there via XF, not 'I Gotta Feeling'.

Spice Girls - 2 Become 1

Spice Girls - Mama/Who Do You Think You Are

Spice Girls - Too Much

Spice Girls - Viva Forever

Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling (X factor performance?)

Black Eyed Peas - Meet Me Halfway

'Meet Me Halfway' was boosted by an X Factor performance actually, not 'I Gotta Feeling'. I think that was just a hugely popular song that had it's video released before the album was released IIRC, so it just naturally sold a lot from the get-go of the album being released. The album mustn't have sold an awful lot by the time 'I Gotta Feeling' reached #1 anyway...

'Poker Face' was technically post-album also, tho it had remixes it out in December 2008 it was only pushed as a single in April 2009, The Fame was released in January 2009

DWMT was pre-album but didn't go #1 until after the release if that counts :P I always forget it wasn't post album though

What was the lead single of the album Toxic was on?

Me Against The Music with Madonna. Bit of a misfire, good song but it probably wouldn't have even been a single (let alone the lead) without Madonna on it.

Hips Don't Lie was only available on a re-release of Oral Fixation 2 as far as I can recall. It couldn't be obtained prior to the CD single/download release.
Surely some of Westlife's number 1's were post-album? Hoping someone knows as I really cba to check
Don't Look Back in Anger - it sold a considerable amount of these on the basis that Oasis fans wanted the b-sides as well as owning the parent album

Britney had another one in 'Born To Make You Happy'! The 4th (!!) Single from a million selling album! (Singles 2 & 3 failed to top the chart - but managed top 5).

Atomic Kitten - Whole Again is another single that went to number 1, after the first 4 failed to go anywhere near! (Top 20 for the single before WA!)

Madonna had two from True Blue. The title track and La Isla Bonita, the third and fifth singles respectively.
As impressive as it is for any post-album single to get to #1, it actually happened quite a lot in the 80s and 90s. It's really only the last few years that it's become such a rarity, due to the digital age. So arguably 'Thinking Out Loud' being a post-album #1 is far more impressive than, for example, '2 Become 1' or 'Don't Look Back In Anger'. Should we limit the list to the last 5 years or something?

Is that because 2 Become 1 and Don't Look Back in Anger were fan based purchases by bands that had huge fan bases?
Partly that, yes. But also because back in those days, people would still buy a CD single even if they already had the song on the album, for remixes, B-sides or just to have the singles collection or whatever. These days, if you've already downloaded the album, it makes no sense whatsoever to download a single from it.

Razorlight - America

Robbie Williams - She's The One - the fourth single from 'I've Been Expecting You'

Christina Aguilera - Beautiful

U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
