October 27, 201410 yr Partly that, yes. But also because back in those days, people would still buy a CD single even if they already had the song on the album, for remixes, B-sides or just to have the singles collection or whatever. These days, if you've already downloaded the album, it makes no sense whatsoever to download a single from it. That's klnida what I mean by fanbase purchases. They were being purchased by fans wanting the extra stuff.
October 27, 201410 yr Author As impressive as it is for any post-album single to get to #1, it actually happened quite a lot in the 80s and 90s. It's really only the last few years that it's become such a rarity, due to the digital age. So arguably 'Thinking Out Loud' being a post-album #1 is far more impressive than, for example, '2 Become 1' or 'Don't Look Back In Anger'. Should we limit the list to the last 5 years or something? I see your point and although they were genuine No1s post album singles by bands like Oasis & The Spice Girls got to No1 due to the fanatical nature of their fans. We are getting into a messy subject here though as their fans will obv argue that point. But yeah Songs like Pokerface, I Gotta Feeling & hopefully Thinking Out Loud are the perfecte examples because they got their due to genuine love of the song.
October 27, 201410 yr Poker Face and I Gotta Feeling were from albums that hadn't sold that much when they hit no.1. Pretty much these songs are what caused the high album sales so they shouldn't count either.
October 27, 201410 yr B.o.B - Airplanes is one of my favourites. Also Timbaland - The Way I Are (I think this might have been the first ever post-album #1 in the digital age?)
October 27, 201410 yr B.o.B - Airplanes is one of my favourites. Also Timbaland - The Way I Are (I think this might have been the first ever post-album #1 in the digital age?) Off the top of my head, Shine by Take That got there months before and that was post album.
October 27, 201410 yr Domino for Jessie J was for the repackage of Who You Are so that really doesn't count.
October 27, 201410 yr "Counting Stars"? Surely that was months after Native was released. I remover being on another forum and everyone was in a rampage because it was already #1 in the UK and wasn't getting a US release at the time. It was kinda funny to watch, actually.
October 27, 201410 yr Domino for Jessie J was for the repackage of Who You Are so that really doesn't count. Exactly, that's like saying Ellie Goulding's Burn should count.
October 27, 201410 yr Exactly, that's like saying Ellie Goulding's Burn should count. Well to be fair 'Burn' was released before 'Halcyon Days' whereas the re-release of 'Who You Are' was a little while before 'Domino' got pushed as a single. It was a pretty low-key re-release though so I doubt many people owned 'Domino' on the album prior to it charting.
October 27, 201410 yr Author I would count Domino in this case because of the nature of the album re-release over the Xmas period as bre stated where it got swamped by other new albums but the fact it got released and played by radio to build on the success of the artist just after her massive first album. Look at how the song rose up the chart in the kind of way very popular hits did over the years - Entered -31/12/2011 54-34-8-{1}-1-3-4-4-6-6-10-11-11-14-13-11-15-25-27-31-38-42-46-50-32-44-43-45-38-29-31-52-75R(52)-66->34
October 27, 201410 yr I think the ideal test would be to compare how much the parent album had sold when the song in question got to No. 1. Although clearly no-one has the time to go digging for those kinds of stats  Edited October 27, 201410 yr by Mango
October 27, 201410 yr Domino doesn't seem as big as it did :o But yeah I remember Telephone jumping from 12 to 1 which was a post-release and was hovering between 60-70 for a while before peaking
October 27, 201410 yr 2005 was the last year we had quite a lot of these. Eminem, U2, Nelly, Oasis, Gorillaz and Pussycat Dolls all getting there once the album was out. I guess the former three don't count as downloads weren't incorporated yet and maybe none of them do as they were only counted with a physical copy available. I still remember Gorillaz trying to get round the silly rule by leaking a few hundred copies and charting for a month on downloads alone. :D
October 27, 201410 yr Surely some of Westlife's number 1's were post-album? Hoping someone knows as I really cba to check  I Have A Dream / Seasons In The Sun & Fool Again were all #1 after the album was released. I might be wrong but every UK single from their debut may have gone in at #1? That could be another interesting topic, most #1's from one album, excluding compilations.

It was kinda funny to watch, actually.'Counting Stars' was the lead/first single in the UK I think! 'If I Lose Myself' was the second single/it was pushed properly as the 2nd single. (Could be wrong though - I think they just released the album at the same time as the US release)

(Could be wrong though - I think they just released the album at the same time as the US release) 'If I Lose Myself' was the first UK single, it just did nothing the first time around. 'Counting Stars' was the second single and after its success 'If I Lose Myself' was re-released.
October 28, 201410 yr I Have A Dream / Seasons In The Sun & Fool Again were all #1 after the album was released. I might be wrong but every UK single from their debut may have gone in at #1? That could be another interesting topic, most #1's from one album, excluding compilations. Yeah, all five singles from their debut album went straight in at #1. In fact their first seven singles went straight in at #1. No matter what you think of Westlife, that's an impressive achievement!

(Could be wrong though - I think they just released the album at the same time as the US release) Native was released in the UK on March 25, 2013 according to Wikipedia and first hit the charts (at no. 35) on April 6, 2013 while Counting Stars reached its' peak on October 12, 2013 so I think it definitely fits the bill with ease.
October 28, 201410 yr How did we all forget 'Someone Like You'?! Edited October 28, 201410 yr by Mango
