I heard this song for the first time in years recently and I wondered if this has ever been in the top 1500?

Things have honestly changed a lot in the past couple of years when it comes to race in mainstream music. For example, it used to be rare to see a white person having a hit with an R&B, hip hop or soul song, but in 2013 and 2014 it's become very common (to the point where it almost seems more common for white people to get hits in these genres now).

That's not quite what I meant. What I'm suggesting is that if a record label had a choice between a white and a black rapper/singer of equal talent, they would probably choose the white one because they are more "marketable". Its generally a UK thing, since the majority of the population is white.

Your point about white people dominating black music genres is too true. Some of these cases are marketability over talent :(

#163? LMAO

I meant has it appeared in the iTunes top 1500 at all? because every now and then we get some random re-entries for rap songs so I wondered if this was one of them.

GooglePlay have the following 99p albums as a 24 hour deal

Coldplay - Ghost Stories

Sam Smith - In The Lonely Hour

One direction - FOUR

All the Xmas classics (bar Mariah's highest version at #92) have now left the top 100 but Band Aid 30 are still as high as #36!

Wondering if the 1D fans are keeping it that high with their gift cards?

Leona stay quite high last yr until new year perhaps it's due to its new Xmas release status in comparison to the old favs but OMS is the only comparison we really have in the download era.

I think Bang Bang is the definition of a gift-card-beneficiary having three acts all with fanbases containing tweens/teens who will purchase the song with their gift cards (Ariana the most out of three, but still the combined effort of all of their fanbases is the reason for it being so high!) The same goes for Bo$$, with Fifth Harmony having a tween/teen fanbase that may not have their own debit card yet and have to rely on gift cards to purchase their songs!

such a shame about Gorgon City falling so fast :( was inevitable really but it was holding up well until a few days ago (one of the JOYS of the gift card effect :mansoncheer:)
Tom Odell plummeting too :( But The Vamps getting a huge boost with Oh Cecilia *.* Cannot complain about that!

I think it'll pick up again once the gift card effect dies down and the new year comes into play. It was really picking up on streaming too, but then it got passed by a lot of Christmas songs. Once they die down in the next few days or so, it should rise quite nicely on streaming. It was #15 on iTunes Christmas eve, so hopefully it'll remain top 40 on Sunday's chart.

To be fair, before Emimem and even years after the idea of a white person in his genre was laughable. White boys cant rap. It was black artists like Pharrell giving white american artists some legitimacy in the genre in the mid 00s urban domination that started this trend.

Yeah you can't deny Eminem's legacy. When artists like Plan B, Professor Green, Devlin and even Mike Skinner first broke through, they were all sold as the "British Eminem". It was almost like the only reference point

I suppose you can credit Timbaland with that too, although I can only think of Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado that fit your criteria

The Beastie Boys say hi.

I know they were initially promoted as a novelty act but they were genuine talents and were having big hits and critical success before "Emimem" was famous.

I think actually there's a subtly different thing going on, where black acts - or at least black men - are more likely to be perceived as "urban". Imagine if George Ezra sounded exactly the same way he does but looked different, for example. I don't think there's a lack of record company support from MNEK, he seems to hget quite a lot of investment after his failures as a solo act, but the media probably regard him differently.

Oddly, the effect seems to be different with women, nobody seems to have any trouble accepting Emeli Sande or Lianne La Havas as MOR singers.

'Listen To The Man' NEEDS to go Top 40 this week!

If it hasn't gone T40 on weeks when it's been higher, I doubt it'll make it this week - if anything it might fall with all the Christmas songs that'll still be T40 officially. Fingers crossed for next week though, it's too good a track to miss out on the T40; and it'd be funny to see a third British male solo artist have 3 songs simultaneously in the T40!

I know but I'm hoping streaming will help it - I haven't actually checked how it's doing in the streaming charts but I'm hoping it's picked up over the last few weeks. Yeah it would be great to see Sam, Ed and George all have three songs simltaneously in the Top 40!

EDIT: Just checked and it's actually performing pretty poorly on streaming so you're right it'll have no chance of being Top 40 this week :(
