Rebecca Ferguson - Nothing's Real But Love - Silver

 Happy to see this certified, such a great song. Would be nice to see "I Hope" or "Backtrack" certified in the future as well, although looks like that may be a while before that happens.

'American Idiot' sold just 61k in 2004, meaning 339k since. It's their second best seller, following 'Good Riddance', and I imagine it won't be long until 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' is certified Gold.

Crazy that it sold so little back then was that just it's physical sales or download sales too? What are "Wake Me Up When September Ends" sales like?

Just physicals! 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' had sold 210k as of May 2012 and 'American Idiot' had sold 205k - I imagine both have sold and streamed a similar amount throughout the years which makes me think it too is on the verge of Gold.

'Don't Let Go (Love)' sold 400k in 1997, meaning 200k worth of downloads and streams. Its best year since 1997 was 2011 when it reached the Top 40 twice thanks to Little Mix on The X Factor.

'Wide Awake' sold 302k in 2012, meaning 98k since. It is Katy Perry's 14th best seller, in between 'Part of Me' and 'Waking Up in Vegas'.

'Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)' sold 458k in 1999, meaning 142k in downloads and streams.

Femme Fatale was already confirmed to be on 102k last year, so the BPI have either 'forgotten' until now or their data for the album is faulty in some respect (similarly to how Ceremonials and 18 Months do not have the certifications they require).

Adele  Hoping 'Hometown Glory' finally gets a silver cert next! And :cheer: at Britney finally being updated to Gold.

Next week Rick Astley coming to snatch all weaves with a silver award?!

18 Months does have its certification now. Some guy asked the BPI on Twitter in May and they said there was a glitch. It's 2x Platinum

How much did it sell in downloads in 2004? Lets say it sold 50k for example even though those sales were not included at the time they are now aren't they?

Two more albums with 10 times platinum awards - Adle's 25 and Dirty dancing OST.

I believe download sales are backdated to November 2004. None sold before that are counted.

Wow, thanks for the info

  • 5 weeks later...
Michael Jackson's Number Ones was on 2.35 million by the end of June and has just gone 8x Platinum. That means 50,000 sales in little over a month?

OCC does not include streaming sales in their all-time lists. So less than 50,000 sales in a month.

BEATLES - YELLOW SUBMARINE

Gold Certification (Album) 12 August 2016

UNIVERSAL MUSIC (APPLE CORPS)

Released 09 September 2009

Certification History:

Silver Certification 22 July 2013

So that's 100,000 CDs, vinyl, downloads, streams in 7 years. It was in the Top 100 chart for just one week, no. 89. Is it really selling 275 copies per week?

Or have they included original CD sales from 1994 (when BPI started) to 2009?

OCC does not include streaming sales in their all-time lists. So less than 50,000 sales in a month.

So almost 50,000 streaming sales since last year? Inpressive, even for someone like MJ

Thanks for that. A big update will be coming and I'll try stay on top of it after!

About 60% of the sales of Singles by Maroon 5 must come from streaming as it's never even reached the top 30

Looking at the new issue of UKChartsPlus there's another raft of certifications for Singles. So much so (21 in total this week) that the certification scheme is in danger of becoming meaningless. At one time a certification was meant to be an achievement, now it is fast becoming the norm for tracks that reach the upper echelons of the Singles chart.

In the current top 40 we have 28 tracks which have a certification (including 16 of the top 20) of which two are 2 x Platinum and another 9 that are Platinum. The sales needed to achieve Platinum, Gold and Silver were set back in the days of physical sales (and even then were lowered in 1989 when sales were in decline) but reflected sales in an era where physical copies of a single would at one point be exhausted. This changed with the growth of the digital downloads era but even that has been dwarfed by the streaming era. Does anyone think that perhaps now is the time to raise the sales levels needed to achieve a certification?

It probably should have been done several years ago (or at least in July 2013 when the automatic certifications scheme was introduced) but perhaps the BPI should seriously consider at least restoring the original levels they set in 1973 which required 250,000 sales for Silver, 500,000 for Gold and 1,000,000 for Platinum rather than the levels set in 1989 of 200,000, 400,000 and 600,000 for those same certifications. At the rate streaming is growing almost every single in the top 40 is going to have at the very least a Silver certification award, which would totally dilute the scheme and all but make it meaningless.

If nothing is done to alter the charts, then I'd be happy to see certifications increased. I mean, a part of me really likea continuity and having a difference in how much it takes to reach a certain certification from before said date to after would bug me slightly for a while, but the current marks for certifications are too low and easy to achieve. Plus it would be nice to know exactly when songs pass 1m if that would be the mark for platinum.

So long as ALL songs had to go by the new certifications instead of pre-change songs going by the previous milestones or, worse, being exempt from being certified all together!
