Album rank overall: 08/10! Do not get the hate at all It is a great album. Samey in some places but it is more cohesive than Prism and Teenage Dream.

I've not had the time to listen in full yet but I have heard the opening two tracks and, I have to say, despite not necessarily being a particularly exciting song, I do find 'Hey Hey Hey' quite the earworm. Probably not single-worthy but I can pick up in parts that it's trying to sound like 'E.T' or 'Dark Horse'. Has the potential to be a grower.
Hey Hey Hey is growing on me a fair bit, at least it's memorable so it's been in my head whereas I've forgotten what a lot of the others sound like
Do you ever have anything positive to say about any pop star bar one?

The title track and Deja Vu are the big standouts for me, both incredible *.* Actually shocked at the reception so far.

He is right - it is tripe. Purposeful poop!

Great review, Ultra!! :cheer: Amma do one!!

I've listened to 75% of the album now and not particularly impressed. The first half is particularly weak. Many of the songs are quite bland and don't stand out. Highlights are chained to the rhythm, bon appetite, miss you more, bigger than me and pendulum. It might grow on me more but I don't have high hopes for this album. I think its a major step back compared to prism and teenage dream - the later was packed with hits but she will be lucky to get another major hit from this album.

Finally got around to taking time out to listen to this!

First listen ratings are:

08.0 Witness

07.0 Hey Hey Hey

07.5 Roulette

09.0 Swish Swish

06.0 Deja Vu

06.0 Power

06.5 Mind Maze

07.0 Miss You More > This reminds me of 'Unconditionally', except less powerful/impactful. Still good though! <

10.0 Chained To The Rhythm

06.0 Tsunami

11.0 Bon Appetit

09.0 Bigger Than Me > This is wonderful. MORE LOVE PLEASE! <

09.0 Save As Draft > HOLY HELL. THIS IS STUNNING. OMG. <

07.5 Pendulum

08.5 Into Me You See > The title is 'If U Seek Amy' teas. Lol. Lovely album closer! <

That run from 'Bon Appetit' to the end though... *.* 'Pendulum' is also very good, I just think the production could be slightly stronger (i.e. the chorus could be more distinct), but YAS at gospel vibes <3

Overall, really not as bad people say it is. A lot of the tracks sound fillery, sure, but they're not abysmal or anywhere near to being so. I feel like a few of them would sound better on their own, away from the album.

No one talking about the Big Brother style live stream she has going on for the next few days then?? :o
First impressions: Am I a little disappointed? Yes I am, I'd be lying to say otherwise, it's all very album track and little else. But, contrary to what other people have said here, I think the production is the saviour for a lot of these tracks. It's all a lot more intricate and abrasive than I'm used to with her, production wise, but it's a shame a lot of the songs as a whole didn't live up to that whole feeling. Roulette is a definite stand out, with Tsunami, Miss You More and Hey Hey Hey also standing out to me. It's a cohesive album for sure though and I feel like a lot of thought has gone into this even if it hasn't necessarily paid off as a risk for her and it's definitely got moments I'd want to go back for, a grower quite possibly.

I went in optimistically after reading some pretty dismal reviews about this on various sites and I have to say that I feel the general consensus is right.

It was always going to be a risk when your brand is 'big bright pop choruses' but this really jumped the shark. There's probably 4 good choruses/hooks across the whole thing.

Really quite shocked to see how heavily involved Max Martin was because he usually gets it so, so right but, to his merit, the production is the best thing about the album.

I know that lyrics have never been one of Katy's strong points but she's really missed the mark lyrically on practically every track. The verses are either very wordy and jarring or slender and drawn out.

Cohesiveness isn't always a good thing if you haven't got the material to back up the idea. Personally, I'd rather it be incohesive and have some stormers.

I'm sure it'll grow though, I do like a fair few songs they're just not what I wanted/expected.

I haven't listened to the whole album yet but I kind of liked what I heard so far (track 1-6, 8, 9, 11, 14 and 15). I think it's a little too samey for now but that's probably 'cause it needs room to grow.

It's s a bold risk that, by the public response, is not paying off but for me personally it's definitely more interesting than her other albums.

I really rather like the album, it's a tiny bit bloated in places - I think I'd have personally left off Power, Mind Maze and Bigger Than Me, which feel like filler, to make for a stronger 12-track package.

But there are lots of great moments elsewhere - Chained To The Rhythm is still one of my favourite songs of the year, Bon Appetit is way better than a lot of people give it credit for and Swish Swish is quickly growing on me.

Outside the singles, Witness is a strong opener, Hey Hey Hey is memorable and I don't get the mass hate, Roulette is absolutely brilliant and pedals that same Europop throwback sound as the Alan Walker remix of Sia's Move Your Body that I love, Miss You More, Save As Draft and particularly Intimacy are enjoyable slower moments, Deja Vu and Tsunami seem quite strong and Pendulum is really melodic and uplifting, a great pop/gospel sort of atmosphere that I wasn't expecting to hear on this album.

I really don't think it's very much worse than Prism personally - maybe the highs were higher on that album but I'm pretty happy with this album overall!

Roulette's production is LUSH!!! what does it sample???? (needs more vocal power tho)

No sample apparently - have bought the CD and am just reading the credits. It does sound familiar, but must just be heavily inspired by something.

The songs on Prism had tunes and choruses. Prism is a world apart from this dirge.
