June 18, 20169 yr Without wishing to sound completely OTT, the next time I'm asked where I'm from I will feel a bit ashamed to say that I'm British, something I've never felt before - the image we're giving to the rest of the Europe (and indeed the world) is not a positive one. As I live in France, a friend once asked me: "Why do the British want to leave the EU? What is it going to bring them?" The emphasis is on "the British". People think all Brits are stupid enough to believe the UK is better off isolated from the rest of the world.
June 18, 20169 yr Killed by a terrorist. Disgusting. It is shameful and shocking and those stoking these flames should be ashamed.
June 18, 20169 yr The horrendous campaign focus on scaremongering has a lot to answer for here and the press and campaign managers should be ashamed of themselves for targeting people's fears as a campaign rather than presenting clear and informed facts. Fully agreed with this - it is not just this campaign that has had dangerous rhetoric however, it is the nationals like the Daily Mail, Express and The Sun - the gutter press that continues to pedal this hate-inciting propaganda as well as our failure (of both government and the people) to build a more inclusive and cohesive society. I felt desperately sad when the news broke on Thursday afternoon and even sadder when I read about Jo Cox, the MP who worked so hard to give a voice to those who most needed it to be heard, and then when the beautifully written statement from her only just bereaved husband was released- it was just too much. It is too early to give an opinion on the motivation for the attack, though it is the first to not be associated with Irish terrorism since Spencer Perceval in 1812 (the only assassination of a British Prime Minister) Somewhere along the line we have taken a wrong turn, lets hope that this is now a huge wake-up call and it is never repeated.
June 18, 20169 yr Very similar to what vidcapper was saying about Cheltenham back in 2000. This has obviously shocked the whole world.
June 19, 20169 yr As I live in France, a friend once asked me: "Why do the British want to leave the EU? What is it going to bring them?" The emphasis is on "the British". People think all Brits are stupid enough to believe the UK is better off isolated from the rest of the world. I would say that if the final result ends up showing a majority or even a number close to the majority of British people wanting to leave the EU, using "the British" here is entirely acceptable. The people who believe the UK is better off without its European neighbours are not just a bunch of randoms, they are millions of people. It is society-wide.
June 20, 20169 yr I saw the parliamentary tributes to Jo Cox this afternoon. It was a very moving and desperately sad occasion with several MPs unable to hold back the tears as they spoke. I'm sure there will be a number of good pieces in tomorrow's papers, but here's one from the Telegraph as a start. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/20...o-cox-in-front/
June 21, 20169 yr I read the Independent's report on yesterday's tributes (published in the i) on the bus this morning and could feel tears welling up, particularly when I got to the last paragraph describing MPs leaving the chamber. High in the far corner, two small pairs of hands flashed against the railing. They were waving, and there on the floor of the house was Stephen Kinnock waving back. The two small pairs of hands belonged to Jo Cox's children :(
June 22, 20169 yr A plane with the banner Vote Leave, Take Control flew over the memorial service on what would have been Jo Cox's 42nd birthday, today, multiple times. Disgusting doesn't even begin to describe it. In better news, should the results be Remain, Ryanair will be having its biggest seat sale, aka discounted seats for flights.

Better not look up the vile facebook page of the organisation quoted by the murderer. The plane is tame in comparison to what that says. Truly evil people. If leave win i would be tempted not return to the uk on saturday - on hols in eu - if i didnt have to look after my parents...
