It's depressing that this is being seen as a win, when (whilst obviously welcome) it's the bare minimum and actually pretty squalid reactionary politics, basically taking the position on what will 'play well' rather than what is morally the right thing to do. Why not actually lead the debate, make the case/argument and bring the country with you instead of being tossed around in the violent seas of public opinion?

Parts of the bill have always been terrible, but this Labour Party are now so afraid of upsetting the GAMMONS that they are happy to cave and accept any conditions the Tories want to impose on us.

About time. Hope voting against a government bill isn't seen as 'acting as a protest group'.

I really did fear that this post was them doubling down on the decision to abstain or something like that, that's how little trust I have in them to stand up for what's right these days.

I HATE that argument that seems to come up more and more for Labour - if you argue against something in opposition your somehow a protest group. (Btw I know you don’t push that!)

Are the rumours that the shadow chancellor is getting sacked true?

His front bench are pretty awful, so it wouldn't surprise me. Probably good politicians and good speakers but can't ever see them connecting with the general public. Such a shame the majority of good Labour politicians are in cushy Mayoral positions or seemingly have no interest in returning to the front bench after 2015-2016.

Dodds is nondescript but far from a problem.

Very few people who are cut out to be chancellor in the Labour party though. There's McDonnell, who obviously won't be asked, there's perhaps... Yvette Cooper or Ed Miliband, both of which will harken back to the milquetoast Labour of 2010-2015, I've seen Rachel Reeves' name around a bit but she has a dodgy history too. And like, I don't even know if removing Dodds as shadow chancellor would make much of a difference aside from more eyes on the fact that Labour just don't have a good team especially if the replacement is underwhelming.

What dodgy about Reeves? Not that I’m a fan she’s hugely right wing but has a financial background so will likely be appointed if Dodds goes!

You do know who the front bench are under Johnson?

To be fair I've seen more left rhetoric from her recently (she would be an improvement in that she's more outspoken) but her old stance on benefits as well as her praising of Nancy Astor will get dragged up. Benefits being the more important one, Labour needs to be trusted among the poorer classes to improve their situation.

Yeh she’s in a northern working class seat so likely needed to be tough esp under Milliband circa 2013!

The Tories front bench is largely awful- mostly overpromoted and they lack any experience. But they're in Government and can do what with an 80+ majority. Unfortunately they are also far connected in the media so can connect with the general public more.

Dodds has the problem that she was made Shadow Chancellor during a pandemic, so of course she's not going to have built up a profile over the past few months, so have no idea why people suddenly think that she's the problem. When things return to near normality, if she has the same issues that I could understand, but for now seems a bit of a nothing burger.

To be fair to them, most of the Shadow Cabinet haven't had much of a chance to shine. A new leader is always going to want to make a lot of the key announcements (whether new policies or opposition to the government) himself in order to establish himself. The pandemic has made it even more difficult.

Given the number of mistakes made by disgraced former Defence secretary Gavin Williamson, the worst performer is arguably Kate Green, his shadow.

If Yvette Cooper is promoted to Chancellor, I'd think she would steal some of Kier Starmer's thunder as she is far more talented at exposing the Tory lies and corruption.
She’s been around since 1997 and yet I couldn’t tell you what she believes in....

Very intrigued to see what people think about this. I often forget just how ingrained traveller prejudice is.

I note she has now claimed not to have realised that the word "incursion" might be seen as a negative term. Hmm...

And now, justified, outrage over Starmer platforming a church that advocates for homophobic conversion therapy. Out of all the possible churches he could have picked.

Continual unforced errors, a party whose leadership is apparently unable to do even basic research into the language they use or who they associate with.

I don’t think that’s fair Iz. The Labour Left right now scream outrage at everything, it’s very selective. Yes, a poor choice I completely agree, but I can’t take Owen Jones seriously at the best of times with his selective outrage. I wonder what he will say when Starmer visits a mosque next.

Nothing particular to Jones, I just picked his tweet as just one of a number of voices I respect all saying essentially the same thing, and he had also made the point that May had fallen foul of this church before. And just as we should condemn May for that, we should condemn Starmer for this, for not doing the due diligence of simple research about who they're visiting.

I don't think that's selective at all. First travellers, now the LGBT community, I just find it astonishing how even when they're trying to be as inoffensive as possible they still mess up.
