August 15, 20168 yr no we won't be seeing any Gorillaz entries in this. Not even Feel Good Inc? :o That's quite surprising for the short chart success they had. Edited August 15, 20168 yr by awardinary
August 15, 20168 yr Not even Feel Good Inc? :o That's quite surprising for the short chart success they had. Feel Good Inc is surely the least dance of their big hits? Clint Eastwood and Dare are quite trip hop so could have a case but FGI is straight up rock-rap. (it has been a while since I commented about the songs that were ACTUALLY appearing, apologies but 2001 is quite a blind spot for me even though I know 2000 very well)
August 15, 20168 yr I'd agree that Feel Good Inc definitely isn't dance... I'd say that the version of Clint Eastwood that was actually played on the radio etc in the UK was the most dance they got and I'd probably have included that. A9q7XAcdUfA Edited August 15, 20168 yr by dandy*
August 15, 20168 yr That Chocolate Puma song took AGES for me to get but nowadays I am fully on board!

August 15, 20168 yr Mini catch up! 'Touch Me' marks a fantastic start to 2001. Love the introduction, the way it progresses and the vocals. Really good driving song! 'Chase the Sun' is a song I recently re-discovered after having the hook stuck in my head for some reason for months and months. Was such a relief to actually put a title to it! Gorgeously chilled out song that has been soundtracking my summer. 'All Man's Land' played straight afterwards on Spotify and that too sounds great and something I'd want to listen to again. None of the other songs have made an impression on me, but thankfully there's a few other songs to come that I love (a #2 from September and a #2 from November particularly).
August 15, 20168 yr Right then time for a catch up :magic: Operation Blade (Bass In The Place): Absolute banger :music: those trancey elements reminiscent of a lot of Scooter's early discography. Not massive on the spoken word parts but the overall massive production more than makes up for it. Another one of a selection that was always played in a club at Uni each week! No Good 4 Me: Can't say I remember this one :o a No Good (Start The Dance) sample! I do like this though, back when garage was everywhere but the wobbly bass in this makes it a little more standout from its peers. Bound will always be their highlight but I'm tempted to give all their hits a listen after finding out they amassed as many as 6 top 20s! Touch Me: Oh yes this is heavenly  one of the finest #1s of the decade for sure. The vocals are lush in this & perfectly complement the production, it's always a track for me that tends to go under the radar but every time I hear it I'm right there again. Amazed this was a #1 compared to some of the tracks from the previous year that weren't but I guess releasing in the quiet January period paid dividends! Chase The Sun: Well as a HUGE darts fan this is right up in my good books. Aside from that, as a song itself I wouldn't put in right up there with the best but it's always a pleasant listen with those dreamy vocals carrying the track. It has a strikingly similar bassy production to Moloko's big hits but I do prefer this to them. American Dream: So was this a brief & short-lived laidback style dance period for the UK with this & the previous track? This is a rather lovely number though if not among my top picks for the year, the production kinda reminds me of Robert Miles in a way although the refrains aren't quite as strong. Good use of the Thomas Newman sample! It's a track I wouldn't choose to play but wouldn't mind coming on during shuffle for example. My Vision is superior to this also... Think About Me: Wow who knew Artful Dodger had so many hits? I literally thought he was a two-hit wonder  this one doesn't really do anything for me, a bit repetitive, no real climax to the song & just doesn't go anywhere, next... I Wanna Be U: This is AMAZING  looking back it sounds so out of place back then but that just makes its success all the more impressive! It's near impossible for me to listen to this without wanting to break into a crazy dance (which translates to subtly bobbing my head when the former isn't possible ) I'm also a big fan of the Nigel & Marvin sample the following year, the very good type of novelty! Just like to say fantastic effort so far guys, appreciate the arduous task keeping this ticking along must be but you're all doing a stellar job :cheer: Edit: Just found out we won't be seeing the almighty Played A-Live in this thread :( I can't begrudge the song it lost out to at all but shame it couldn't sneak 1 week in as it's probably in my top 5 songs of all time  Edited August 15, 20168 yr by Ðøßßø
August 16, 20168 yr Author M&S presents The Girl Next Door - Salsoul Nugget (If U Wanna) http://img2-ak.lst.fm/i/u/300x300/28d0825ed02b493db940f2cc1a1229e2.jpg Date 18th Mar 2001 2 Weeks Official Chart Run 6-10-18-25-26-36-44-51-61-66-69-73-69-x (13 weeks) uQk2bz0e-cU M&S, not to be confused with High Street retailer Marks & Spencer and indeed they have nothing to do with them (despite our constant 'group named after a shop' references), were a London DJ duo consisting of Ricky Morrison and Fran Sidoli. They had been going since 1994 having known each other from going to the same school and by 1996 established their own label '1001 Records'. The release of 'Salsoul Nugget' would however be on London Records, and it would be their only hit single - and also one of the "true" one hit wonders of this thread as they did not do anything else noteworthy afterwards. At least this song and M&S have a wikipedia article, even if it short, which cannot be said of the next entry in this rundown (I'm sure Ethan will find something to say about it anyway but I'm just glad it's not me who has to write it - indeed the next batch of songs range from relatively to extremely forgotten/obscure) The song is a funky house tune with disco influence, sampling Double Exposure's "Everyman" and Loleatta Holloway's "Hit and Run". The song's vocals were done by former model Natasha Bryce who we would also not hear from again.
August 16, 20168 yr Love how funky the instrumental of 'Salsoul Nugget (If U Wanna)' is! One of many discoveries through Kisstory.
August 16, 20168 yr Fantastic tune. This is my favourite so far. Salsoul Nugget is rightly a classic. I like house music like this that retains the funkiness and disco influence of early house hits like 'The Only Way is Up' by Yazz in the late 1980s. There will be a few of these kinds of disco house songs with funky instrumentals in the 2004 to 2006 period of the thread. :) However Salsoul Nugget is different from most of the dance music at the time it was released, you could call it ahead of its time as it was more than 3 years ahead of the main period of this time of dance music. There is not much dance music like Salsoul Nugget in the charts this decade sadly. I suppose Clean Bandit's later material (Stronger, Tears is most similar) although Calvin Harris' Pray to God had the funky instrumental with disco strings too. Disco strings are underused in dance music now imo. :( Edited August 16, 20168 yr by TheSnake
August 16, 20168 yr Salsoul Nugget is certainly a forgotten tune as far as I'm concerned, haven't played it in years, but hearing it just now reminds me how refreshing it still is some 15 years later. :)

Looking forward to some "What?!" reactions but I love them both! (...and in the case of Das Glockenspiel, I'm pretty sure it's the Tiesto remix that charted here rather than the original - Youtube link 3uQrBOXdizc) But back to 'Salsoul Nugget' for now - surprised to hear the woman in the video actually sang some of it, I assumed it was the usual case of sampling all the vocals and getting a model to lipsync the lot, but it looks like she did at least the verses - the opening few lines are Loleatta Holloway, and the looped chorus is cut and sped up from Double Exposure's Everyman...and it's actually a guy singing that bit! Check the start of Everyman to hear the original! Definitely a forgotten gem along with Chocolate Puma, I remember a music blog from the time suggesting it had underperformed somewhat and should have been a #1 in the way Don't Call Me Baby was. Could have easily been done it but #6 isn't bad going. Edited August 16, 20168 yr by BillyH
August 16, 20168 yr Author well seeing as it had to compete with two humugous smashes (HearSay 'Pure and Simple' and Shaggy 'It Wasn't Me') I would've doubted it going to #1. A bit disappointing that it lost a top five position to Westlife though (they were at #5 with 'Uptown Girl' on its 4th week)
August 16, 20168 yr The opening few lines are Loleatta Holloway Great one from 2006 that also samples her: h26MtNfxTAY Youtube link: It only just made top 40 and won't be appearing here, but I actually prefer it to Ride On Time as it has more lyrics in it. About the M&S song, i don't remember it much at the time sadly, given that I like it. Never seen the video for it, but it is very similar to a video for another disco influenced song that will be appearing on the thread for August 2005 and the singer in the video is the real singer for that one too. :) Edited August 16, 20168 yr by TheSnake
August 16, 20168 yr Yes BillyH that Underdog Project song was originally a UK Garage song before all the whistles (it sounded like a referee was hired for the song)and a house beat appeared in it. Aka "Fiesta" by Sunclub rj5pk59zyKo
August 16, 20168 yr I see the term "funky house" being misused. "Touch Me" aint funky house, it actually is more deep house and strongly influenced by trance. "Think About Me" will always remind me of that MTV Base intro, anyone else remember that? "Salsoul Nugget", now this is the kind of house music I can get behind, unlike much of today's crap. Yes stuff like Tieks - Sunshine and MK and Becky Hill - Piece Of Me is much too flat I think with its piano based instrumental. Put some disco strings into it like Salsoul Nugget and it would be much more lively. Also I find the instrumental of that new Disciples song Daylight to be really flat and dull with just a bassline and a beat to it. Same with David Zowie's House Every Weekend, Keisza's Hideaway and Calvin Harris and Disciples' How Deep is Your Love. Edited August 16, 20168 yr by TheSnake
August 16, 20168 yr (...and in the case of Das Glockenspiel, I'm pretty sure it's the Tiesto remix that charted here rather than the original - Youtube link 3uQrBOXdizc) Yep, definitely the Tiesto remix that charted, I bought it on CD single at the time <3 To be fair I bought most of these on CD single at the time, that's where all my money went growing up... August 16, 20168 yr Author I also agree that 'Touch Me' is in no way funky house, soz TheSnake. I like 'Salsoul Nugget' but there are quite a few funky house songs I prefer to it, bit of a jam tho.
