90. CARRY YOU- Union J (49,784) #6

And in the same week as Fuse ODG debuted at No 7 these lot piled into the No 6 position. Union J have never recorded a better opening tally even though they came much closer to No 1 with “You Got It All” that December which did make No 1 on sales only but conceded the top spot to Ed Sheeran once those pesky streams were added.

89. LEGO HOUSE- Ed Sheeran (49,800) #5

LegoHouse.jpg

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2011

Not the last time we’ll meet Sheeran in this thread, “Lego House” became the singer’s third top 10 single helped no doubt by a promo featuring Rupert Grint. It was only 17k off topping the charts despite that No 5 peak.

It will be interesting to see how many of these climbed to their peak like 'Lego House' did, compared to the majority which were held-back releases. Although I can think of at least one which was held back and also climbed to its peak.

Also just noticed, was this supposed to start at #99 rather than #100??

DROP LIKE AN EARTHQUAKE *.* The two DJ Fresh collabs here are some of the best things he's done, they did very well to make the Top 5!

That Iyaz song is awful  sounded just like all the other boring r&b fluff at the time. I assumed it'd be quite a big hit, but looks like it actually dropped off pretty fast which is nice

I think i kinda disliked Antenna at first but i came around to it soon enough (Dangerous Love is still his best though)

The best of this bunch are 'Starry Eyed', 'Carry You' and 'Lego House'. The first two were both great top 40 introductions to the artists in question ~ though this is the only Union J song I enjoyed with the follow-ups being dire, whilst Ellie has a lot of great songs under her belt. 'Lego House' is a gorgeous one from Ed Sheeran and would have been a great chart topper for him.

'Replay' was a bit of a jam but 'Solo' was such a forgettable and bland follow-up, so I'm glad that didn't quite make it. 'Earthquake' is HORRENDOUS so I'm even more glad that one didn't top the chart.

Antenna is a 2010's classic!

When the likes of 1Xtra and Kiss start including 2010's songs in their 'Old School' sections, I'm sure Antenna will be a stable! Much lived, still hear it regularly (along with Azonto) and so joyous.

No it was meant to but I made an error further up the countdown (something peaked at No 2 and I thought it was No 3) so everything has moved up one place! :D

Can't wait to see where Janet is with Together Again !

I begin to wonder if Dannii features ?

Oops just read it's only from 2010

88. I WON’T LET YOU GO- James Morrison (49,994) #5

When you’re up against the might of “Moves Like Jagger” and the mighty Dappy perhaps it’s no surprise that you end up at No 5 but this was still a return to form for Morrison. He’d been absent for 2 years when this became his fifth top 10 single though admittedly the second release from the album featured Jessie J and pretty much ended the album campaign. Odd.

With vocals and lyrics courtesy of a certain Pharrell the vocal was intended for a different track which SHF altered to fit the melody of “One”. Some have said the video is a dig at Guetta for creating a track called “50 Degrees” which uses the synth line from “One” or at least a very similar one!

86. I LIKE IT- Enrique Iglesias Featuring Pitbull (50,019) #4

I rather shamefully loved this at the time, RedOne at the height of his powers along with rent-a-rapper Pitbull and an 80s sample all in the mix- what’s not to like? His follow up “Heartbeat” was his last great single but I’d rather liked this to have become his second chart topper.

James Morrison has seen virtually no success since dueting with Jessie J, NEED I SAY MORE?

85. COOLER THAN ME- Mike Posner (50,025) #5

It took him another 6 years to grab a chart topper as an artist, but his first hit back in 2010 almost did the trick for Posner. The original mix featured a rap by Big Sean but he disappeared on the single mix for some reason, anyway 50k for No 5 isn’t too shabby at all.

84. IF WE EVER MEET AGAIN- Timbaland Featuring Katy Perry (50,028) #3

In the same week as Helping Haiti sold a mind blowing 453k (in February!!) this trick was lingering at No 3, maybe people picked up a copy whilst they were on i-Tunes? Anyway Timbaland and Perry’s first new release of the decade did sell enough to make the top in a couple of weeks during the year had they timed it better. It is apparently Timbaland’s attempt to make something like “I Gotta Feeling”- the rap at the end of the track is performed by Timbaland’s brother- though he’s uncredited.

83. JUST CAN’T GET ENOUGH- Black Eyed Peas (50,166) #3

And talking of the BEP here’s their 2011 offering and final (to date) top 10 single, it’s also one of the few that I can bear to hear. The promo was shot in Japan just before the earthquake struck, not long afterwards they all went their separate ways though some may feature on other tracks to come in this list.
