I honestly don't know. It sort of got overshadowed at the time by the mass media hype around Ed's album etc didn't it so maybe that was a factor. I'm listening to it now and I still think it is one of the most perfect pop songs released in a very very long time.

But then again most of the indie pop girls end up underperforming really don't they - Marina for example and the vocal delivery on Green Light is quite Marina/Kate Bush quirkiness at times so maybe that is partly why.

I think Lorde is not for everybody and the song is a bit unorthodox in structure too

but that said Royals was a #1

I think it was due to lack of streaming? Pretty sure it didn't get very good support on playlists and such. Plus it may have been a little ahead of its time? I love the song more now than when it was originally released.
It's a platinum single though, and I think it actually did reasonably well considering nothing outside of 'Royals' really did anything here for her previously.
It actually did better than I expected it to, I didn't think she was ever likely to be a big singles artist again after 'Royals'. The album on the other hand did pretty disappointingly.

I agree the album could have done better

the songs were certainly there but I blame the label for that, they did a messy job

I feel like Billie Eilish has jacked Lorde's sound somewhat, so I don't really get why she's smashing on streaming in a way that the more well known Lorde wasn't.

This was released the same week as his album, no? I remember it peaking lower because of his album tracks, and then didn't really recover.

'Bury a Friend' is as out of place on the radio as 'Green Light' was, so yes, it's surprising to me not to see that struggle at all. I suppose she has all the hype of a big new artist though.

It really does seem much bigger than the middling chart success would suggest and I haven't experienced anything like this live before. A behemoth.

it's curious it performed nearly identical in the UK & US, #19 in US, #20 in UK

They messed up the single releases so that's why the album ended up under-performing.

I still have no idea why they left out Supercut, easily one of the best on the album. If it's left to me, it would've been a buzz/lead single, then release the massive Green Light shortly afterwards.

Green Light was the perfect lead and is a perfect pop song. I genuinely believe it could have been much bigger in different circumstances.

I think we underestimate how much hype Ed Sheeran stole by releasing his album on the same day - it clogged up the charts worldwide. I don't think they expected that. She wasn't exactly a hit machine outside of Royals, so it was a hard sell either way.

Wasn't Homemade Dynamite supposed to be released in April but was cancelled because of Manchester?

Really? It's the 2nd best on the album, totally single material, only problem is the title and connotations, they should have known better and write something else
