Yes but Britney had major success in 1999....those first 5 singles probably shifted 2.5 million.

Even the singles from In The Zone would have sold over a million combined. And she will have sold plenty of downloads up to 2013.

Gaga being so high up is impressive...her chart beating reign coincided with a time when download sales were at their peak....what do we think her Fame and Fame Monster singles shifted? 5 million plus combined? Would have to be if she is over 8 million.

Britney was, above anything, consistently successful in the UK, far more so than in the US where she released a lot of tracks that stalled in the charts.

The same for Katy Perry I would say. I wouldn'tve expected her to be as high as she finally made it.

Gaga is more like Beyonce (right now) having had one flash in the pan period of being absolutely huge but more niche success since. Singles-wise, at least, which seems to continue to be how we judge pop success levels. Beyonce's just unlucky that hers came at a time when sales across the board were comparatively lower. (and more expensive? than downloads)

Each artist remaining on the list has had a huge career, full of ups and downs but have lasted the test of time.

Rihanna, is the one i feel wont be remembered as much as the others in the future. Rihanna has had the hits but as a person i find her reasonably forgettable, that said i know so many will differ on this opinion.

Britney, music material is very hit and miss, her earlier material was her best and she peaked in that era. Britney in comparision to the others peaked and never fully reached her peak again, it was her personal life that often kept her in the public eye more than her music.

Madonna and Kylie are the two i feel peaked, faded (Kylie to a larger extent) came back and had just as much success all over again and that is what i enjoyed about their career, you could never fully write them off.

BIGGEST HIT: POKER FACE

Who can forget the impact of Gaga through the 09/10 period, marrying electro pop to arresting visuals immediately prompted those Madonna comparisons with which we’re so familiar. Perhaps over familiarity bred a little contempt with each subsequent era have a lesser impact than the last though the tunes continued to come and it’s now been 4 years since her last top 10 single but she did score 4 No 1 hits in just over a year back in the day- quite an achievement.

Gosh gaga really was massive for those 2 years wasn't she! She finished way higher than I would have expected her to, would never have thought she would be ahead of the likes of Whitney.

Rihanna is the only one of the top 8 who can still score a huge hit, she had 3 million selling singles last year alone. She is the only one who is having continued success and has effortlessly become a streaming force too.

To which the time frame on this is a bit misleading, because those last 4 years and the induction of streaming has completely transformed the charts and Rihanna is the only one who has moved with it.

Rihanna doesn't need to be remembered as she is very much the present still unlike most other artists in this thread.

The time frame is not "Misleading" it is clearly stated in the title and my explanation as to why this is the time frame is contained in the first post. I don't want to reopen the "streaming VS sales" debate because the whole thread was designed to avoid it but we need to compare like for like.

I don't dispute that Rihanna can still produce big hit singles probably more than any other act in the top 10 at least, but everyone is "selling"less than before because sales are nosediving including hers though as you note she has successfully made the transition to streaming whilst others struggle.

Has she sold more than any other female act to date? yes is the almost definitely the answer but I don't know the breakdown of her most recent hits so that's why I avoided the last 3.5 years. Did she do enough to pass Madonna by 2013 we'll see by the weekend.

My prediction;

1. Rihanna ☹️

2. Madonna

3. Kylie

4. Britney

Rihanna has sold a lot of singles in last 10 years so would expect she has now overtaken Madonna although Madge is far more worthy of winning the title. Kylie is likely to be 3 followed by Britney.

Well I think the cut off point is designed to make sure Rihanna is 2 behind Madonna. But we shall see.

I think is possible. IIRC in 2012, Madonna was around 6 million sales ahead of Rhianna, so I'm not sure whether in just over a year she could have caught up...

Kylie definitely top 3, can't see her being number 1. Fingers crossed Madonna beats Rihanna then I'll be happy.

Yes I know you do. You've stated that before. My reason is stated in the first post so I'm sorry if you feel that it has all been orchestrated to deny an act the top spot which you clearly like.

If there was some way of definitively separating sales from streaming yet I STILL used 2013 as the cut off and things panned out the way you anticipate then your argument would have merit. If you know of a way then please let me know.

2013 is the best cut off point. After that, it's difficult to separate streams from sales and streaming gives way too much of an advantage to newer artists and it must be difficult to measure any streaming for most of the women in this countdown. Personally I hope Rihanna isn't no.1 because I don't like her and find a lot of her music forgettable. I don't like Madonna either but she is more memorable to me.

BIGGEST HIT: BABY ONE MORE TIME

As debuts go “Baby One More Time” must count as one of the more memorable, schoolgirl lust raised a few eyebrows at the time but it wasted little time shifting 1.4 million at the time. Her career can be seen in two parts, firstly as pop princess 99-04 where only 2 singles missed the top 10 and she racked up 16 top 10 hits with 5 chart toppers then the 07- present which might be more varied but with just 7 top 10 singles and a No 1 (in tandem with Will.i.am) in between of course she was in the paper’s for all the wrong reasons with a rollercoaster private life.

This thread is just a feature to document the sales between a period that Gezza can be certain about as a resource. Who cares if Madonna or Rihanna is #1 or #2? Even if Gezza had, for some bizarre untold reason, decided to commit this atrocious hate crime to all Rihanna fans then it doesn't really make the slightest difference, her sales and streams after 2013 still exist.

Britneys discography was interesting...I completely forgot Pretty Girls with Iggy Azalea was ever a thing...that was a weird time for pop music.

Kylie up next perhaps?

And on that point, I wonder how high Rihanna would end up if her features didn't count. Getting her on so many was genius by her management for getting her name and voice out there in lots of different genres.
