Well if Corbyn gets in to power the civil service will need to double in size!

I see the Jeremy Corbyn PR exercise to make sure he stays as Labour leader after the election is in full swing!!

If the Tories end up with a majority similar to the one they had before the election, Corbyn will have a good case for being allowed to stay. He may even be able to get some of Labour's bigger hitters to join the front bench. If that does happen, I can still see him going in a couple years' time.

He is going to try and stay regardless. It is the worst Tory leadership that I can remember and the worst Labour leadership that I can remember. I suspect he is holding his rallies in lots of his safe areas to try and increase his voting percentages. He seems a very loyal man so I can't imagine him getting rid of some of his front bench.

I doubt it will double - unless police are civil service jobs like they are in Spain?

If we're re-nationalising a lot of industries (some right, some not needed ie. the damage is already done) and then going through Brexit we are going to need a hell of a lot of civil servants. I don't even think we have enough as it is to deal with the implications of Brexit.

No offence, but...we all work hard for our money. Those on less than average wages like me are just as much (if not more so) stressed and overworked on take home £1500 a month. 80k is an unthinkable fortune to me, I could buy a house in 5 years instead of living and caring for my parents. We can quibble about when higher rates of tax should cut in, but 80k is VERY comfortable. If I earned 80k I would be deliriously happy to donate 40% to the state to help pay for those who are stuck in a poverty trap.

Bear in mind every millionaire also thinks they deserve every penny and work hard for it...

Voluntary tax relies on human nature, and human nature default position is selfishness. You only have to look around the world to see that everywhere throughout the whole of human history. Making proposals like that is the same as saying "the poor should rely on charity not the state" which is the American Republican Party who are quite happy to allow millions of people to die from lack of finance to medical insurance. People are very very good at coming up with "moral" reasons why they shouldn't support the needy - lazy, terrorist supporters, too stupid, dont agree with religion, race, bigotry, bitterness, resentment, or just plain don't give a shit about other people.

Think about it next time you walk past a homeless person, as we all now do in most town centres - never used to be this way. Everyone has the opportunity to "volunteer" assistance, but most don't.

Exactly!!

Yes, because the electorate have a habit of voting against the way most of the press want them to vote

You really have no idea about anything, do you?

I have no idea what you are talking about, if that counts.

What planet are you on? Throughout the referendum campaign the front pages of the Sun, Mail and Express were dominated by anti-EU rubbish. Only one paper regularly had pro-EU headlines on the front page,

Brexit really doesn't fit with this anti-establishment vibe you're going for. Farage is a millionaire ex-stock broker and the charge was lead by people at the heart of the government. Plus the UK has Europes most right wing media and they were firmly pro-Brexit. If anything Brexit was the establishment choice in England and Wales.

The concept that a civil service job is a job for life is woefully outdated.

Tell that to the 'Humphrey Applebys' in the upper ranks...

Given that he's a character from a sitcom that hasn't been on TV since the 80s, probably not the best example.

That's why I put his name in quotes!

However real civil servants in his sort of position are equally immune to losing their jobs.

BTW, who'll be watching the Election coverage on Thursday night, and how long will you stay up?

I usually record it, that way I can watch the actual results, but skip all the politician's platitudes... :)

It's repeated on BBC Parliament all day Saturday.

An update on the "targeted advertising fails" discussion mentioned last week - I just got a sponsored advert from UKIP Nottingham. This is in spite of the fact that a) I have never sat foot in Nottingham or the Greater Nottingham area my whole life b) UKIP aren't just not running a candidate in my constituency, they are not running a candidate in the entirety of Northern Ireland, and c) UKIP.

That's odd, as I have been told in The Lounge many times that it was the 'racist uneducated masses' who voted for Brexit...

Not to mention 3/4's of MP's.

Oh my GOD MPs followed party lines who decided it would be electorally stupid to not go along with Mad May. Do NOT try and use that as propaganda. We are NOT stupid on here and see right through it.

Yes. The people who were brainwashed by the papers and those angry at 'immigrants' etc voted Brexit as COMMANDED BY THE PAPERS AND THE ELITE WHO WOULD BENEFIT FRM MORE CONTROL AND SLACKER LABOUR AND ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS BY BEING OUT. The average man might be impoverised by it and can't afford EU holidays anymore or the expensive flighrs but, hey, the Elite got what they wanted and the brainwashed lot think they made a political opinion of their own!

Having done a postal vote for the 2015 election and last year's referendum, it did always worry me that they may actually be lost after sending it off. I know that's not the case there but that's because it's easier to know if voters haven't actually received their postal ballot, whereas they're can't really be any checks if the completed ballots are received.
Does anyone have the feeling that recent events in the UK might tip the election in Jeremy Corbyn's favour? I think it will be highly embarrassing for Theresa May if she loses this election since it was her idea in the first place and she is refusing to cancel it.
