So le Mercuré returns tomorrow morning with another 12 albums of presumed ~high quality~ Does anyone still care? or knew it was happening? either way I still follow it with interest even despite some previous mishaps (if they expect me to forgive that Get To Heaven snub then quite frankly they can GET TO HELL)

a list of potential contenders:

Sampha (dead cert)

Stormzy (dead cert)

Kate Tempest

Laura Marling

The xx

Richard Dawson

Rag'n'Bone Man (they like to have a commercial success or two on there)

Idles

Loyle Carner

Wiley

Bonobo / Kelly Lee Owens (one of the two)

Slowdive

Alfa Mist (the 'jazz pick')

Gorillaz

personal wishlist - Mura Masa (could happen), Glass Animals (maybe?), Jamie T (unlikely), Dutch Uncles (also unlikely), Kero Kero Bonito (about as likely as me winning the buzzrate, but just imagine)

winner announced on September 14th ~

I have Gorillaz, Dutch Uncles, XX, Loyle Carner, Wiley & Stormzy!
Rooting for Laura Marling here, "Semper Femina" is my favourite album she's put out thus far.

alt-j - 'Relaxer'

Blossoms - 'Blossoms'

Dinosaur - 'Together, As One'

Ed Sheeran - '÷'

Glass Animals - 'How to Be a Human Being'

J Hus - 'Common Sense'

Kate Tempest - 'Let Them Eat Chaos'

Loyle Carner - 'Yesterday’s Gone'

Sampha - 'Process'

Stormzy - 'Gang Signs & Prayer'

The Big Moon - 'Love in the 4th Dimension'

The xx - 'I See You'

ED SHEERAN?

UGH, Ed.

All about Sampha for me.

It's a shame to not see Laura Marling on there, will this be her first album to not be on the list? Would've been great to see Mura Masa on there too but I wasn't sure it was that likely.

A Creature I Don't Know from 2011 and Short Movie from 2015 both missed out on the shortlist.

Nice to see xx, Loyle Carner,,Kate Tempest, Big Moon and Glass Animals on there

Ed Sheeran?! Lol!

The xx, Glass Animals and Stormzy's are the albums I enjoy most off the list (of the ones I've heard)

Ah okay! Thanks.

Still, 3 out of 6 is pretty good!

Hopefully this is the year that Public Service Broadcasting is finally recognised for the Mercury. Would love to see Ten Fé, but I doubt they'd be there.

Would've been great to see Mura Masa on there too but I wasn't sure it was that likely.

Is there a time frame that an album has to be released in to be eligible? Just wondering that, because these albums were released in the last couple of weeks, maybe they'll be eligible for next year?

I think it's just the last 12 months from last July, maybe give or take a few weeks from when the shortlist comes out. I remember the Arctic Monkeys being nominated just a few weeks after their album came out.

lol @ Ed Sheeran, I get that it's trying to get a younger audience back on board but still :') Glass Animals up tho <3

Nice to see Blossoms and Glass Animals in this list! Never expected The Big Moon at all but it's a welcome addition. And of course The xx
  • 1 month later...

Bumping this as the result is announced tomorrow! It'll be broadcast on BBC Four from 9pm with BBC Radio 6 Music covering it from 7pm.

I want The xx to snatch this but will be happy with alt-J, Blossoms or Glass Animals too to be honest. Stormzy will be a surprise as I don't expect we will get another grime artist for a second consecutive year!

Thoroughly deserved! By far my favourite of the ones I've heard
