To be fair, we have only had one song get to #1 because of the rules so far. Even Feels is not set in stone yet, and then that would only make it two.

I think people are getting a bit carried away over nothing at this point. People seem to be getting more worked up over the potential impact these changes can have on the chart, rather than what has actually happened so far.

Really rooting for Dua at this point. Forgot what the last solo female number 1 we had was.

Well we've only had the new rules for a month and if we get 2 'fake' #1s by the end of this week that's... not exactly a great start for them.

What annoys me most is that #1s could potentially come completely out of luck in terms of timing. Say for instance Despacito had just started taking off when Wild Thoughts was released then the latter would never have gotten a sniff, it was only because Despacito was tailing off in sales then the new rules came into affect when Wild Thoughts was still ripe. It seems to me it won't be long before labels hold back songs again - as say if a HUGE song blows up & hogs the top for say 8 weeks everyone will be like "well just wait for it to decline in sales for 3 weeks THEN release". Farcical really.

Technially speaking ever since they introduced streaming at all, none of the #1s have been accurate necessarily because they weren't going by the previously-set-in-stone metric of the song that sold the most in the country that week, and the most sold and most sold + streaming boost haven't necessarily correlated.
I suspect Glen Campbell will go top ten and top five the week after with probably a lot of tribute shows on BBC4 etc

Given how low Sales are this week I think there is a chance it could make top five this week (and possibly edge Dua Lipa down to #6).

It is currently Amazon's Best Seller selling at £10.12 (earlier in the day it was £4.99, I can understand an increase but more than 100% seems a bit unnecessary).

the thing is, we may all have problems with so-called 'fake' #1s like Wild Thoughts/Feels, but is it really that much different to back in the day when certain songs would only make #1 due to being held back for ages?

exactly, there's always been some questionable rules/tactics in the chart which cause calls of 'manipulation', but that's the way it is and that's the way it has been ever since the internet became a thing... and it won't change so we might as well get used to having supposed 'fake #1's'

agree, we have to relax and enjoy instead of complaining 24/7

charts have never been 100% true,

- counting a few "selected" stores and then using multipliers

- in the beginning, downloads did not count until the song was released physically

- preorders on iTunes, also grats counting towards the charts

the acr is a bit unfair and caps would have been better

but rather that than nothing... I mean, would Despacito be #1 if there were a cap

on Spotify? how many people have streamed for the first time this week vs. how many

are on the 276th time? :)

this basically.

obviously there are going to be a few questionable #1's from now but at least it speeds up the #1 turnover, and it makes the charts a bit more interesting. i'd MUCH rather have the charts we have now than the ones we were getting this time last year. at least we'll actually get some movement at the top more often.

Is that even a serious comparison?

Is that even a serious comparison?

I think so. The #1 used to just be the best-selling new single that happened to be released that week. It wasn't necessarily genuinely the most popular real hit of the moment. It could be argued that a song that wasn't out yet was more popular - or last week's #1 that had only dipped to #2 because some boyband with a dedicated fanbase had come along.

I don't agree with that comparison. One was a chart tactic that most artists used, that had potential to givethem the most sales of that week, but it didn't work for everyone - You'd have held back releases charting at #1, #4, #9, #16 in the same week. It's no different from CD singles being held back for weeks after being on the radio and music channels for decades. They were still the most bought songs that week. The issue here is that the most popular/bought/streamed song is not always going to #1 . I'm not complaining too much because I want Feels as #1, but it still strikes me as odd.

That's just it though - the chart has never truly reflected what was the most popular song that week, because of the reasons I just gave.

When it was all about sales it was reasonable that it should just always be the most sold. But now streams are added, you can't just add streams as if they are the same thing as sales, because they're not. So adding in rules to make the chart work seems fair enough.

Having said that, I'm undecided over whether they should have implemented the rule only once a single has left the top 10 or something. It did seem a bit unfair when Despasito was knocked off #1 - especially as it was the best-selling single as well.

I think the problem with the rule if it has to be there is that it's all so sudden. It should be staggered, i.e. falling from 150:1 to 200:1 then to 250:1 and so on up until say, 500:1 if it has continued decreasing.
we're never going to have a chart that's 100% reflective of the most popular songs, but it's as good as we're going to get so we might as well just get used to the new rules

I do agree with this, I wasn't saying the new rules are perfect because they aren't, just saying that we've been having songs go to #1 that perhaps didn't really deserve it for years.

I wouldn't say people are 'carried away', but on a chart forum it's fine to be confused and annoyed at a chart rule that distorts what #1 is, we may have only had one but I'm sure we'll have many many more.

'Hello' is the answer to your last question, so yeah, it's been a while.

I think carried away is justified based off of some of comments I have been seeing on here since the new rules were put in place. People calling it the death of the chart & saying it should be scrapped etc. This is definitely the minority of people on here, but still there are obvious cases.

As far as the general public are concerned that don't follow these things to the same degree as most of us, I doubt many have even noticed.

Thanks for the answer, clearly we are well overdue a solo female #1. I am guessing the next we will have is Taylor, though dua would be a great surprise.

Oh, absolutely. I don't disagree with that.
