Kim starts off our points with some serious swag, as her vocals are really easy to warm to and the production is top notch. 02 N DNTN // Charlotte Gainsbourg - Deadly Valentine recent queen of the UK iTunes top 500 Charlotte Gainsbourg is up next with this lovely grower. we feel silly for predicting this to DNQ now but it was just due to its subtlety. we're glad that this 6-minute beauty has caught on as it's instantly relaxing every time due to the soft vocals and equally gentle production. 03 Rolloland // Anathema - Untouchable we expected this almost-12 minute two-parter epic to end up a bit higher in our votes but it was knocked down due to growers. us Jadakissnians loved the passion that shone through the the male vocals, the lush transition to the duet in part 2 and both the heavier instrumentation of part 1 and the soft piano production that came in later on. very standout. 04 Bhangra // RÜFÜS - You Were Right this is like a more accessible version of recent RÜFÜS entry 'Innerbloom' as the length is trimmed quite significantly. that was always going to be hard to top as it was our 18 pointer but this is definitely another good'un from RÜFÜS. 'You Were Right' isn't quite as dreamy as 'Innerbloom' but their general sound was still apparent in the production and we liked this familiarity. a formula needn't always be a bad thing. this is one of Bhangra's best entries since their comeback last year. 05 Caerfyrddia // Jennie Abrhamsson - Into Deep welcome to our voting history for the very first time, Caerfryddia! we have heard good things about this nation from others who have similar taste to us, so we hope you stick around and deliver more gems like this. 'Into Deep' sounds like a Susanne Sundfør song and we have a good track record of stanning a lot of her work. this synthy beauty is so commanding that we're even willing to overlook the slightly annoying title ('in too deep' >>>). we are hoping for big things for this entry, top 10 por favor! 06 Fljótavík // Kölsch - þema fyrir fljótavík now it's time for another #longsongbloc entry 'cause we're just so loyal to the bloc like that, even when our own entry is shy of 4 minutes. although this one takes long song to another level with its 20 minute duration! we didn't feel like this was taking the piss however, because the sounds change quite a bit throughout due to the nature of it being a megamix, so this left us more than satisfied. here we have some absolutely delightful instrumentation (we're suckers for strings always!) and some seriously impressive editing which ensured seamless transitions throughout. a brave 100 statement that has paid off with its spot in the final. 07 Suedeonia // Baxter Drury - Miami (Parrot & Cocker Too Remix) it's time to whip out Etta James - 'At Last' as Suedeonia have finally made it into our votes again, for the first time since 86! the Jadakissnia-Suedeonia points are very lopsided in our voting history (god bless you for being such a regular supporter of ours) but we're finally pushing Suedeonia into double-figure points received from us now! we seriously did not expect this entry to be the one to do it though, what a marvellous surprise it was to see this qualifying. Ian Dury's son Baxter has unleashed this infectious but barmy song rife with expletives on us - just listen to those lyrics - "I'm a salamander"? "I'm the sausage man"? golden stuff. i love the electronic elements of the production, the strings, the weirdness... yes yes yes. i guess the female-vox chorus is the one moment of sanity, i reckon that's why it qualified. seriously standout and another strong #longsongbloc entry. 08 Hendinia // Vanbot - Hold This Moment here is a contender that we can get behind! we shall be cheering loudly as Hendinia most likely receive yet another 3rd place for this one. xx the synthy production and desperately passionate vocal delivery mix together delightfully here <3 'Hold This Moment' sounds incredibly wide-appealing with a chorus that is likely to prick up the ears of pophoes and the synth enthusiasts like me are likely to melt at how divine those are. this is the most points that we have awarded Hendinia since 78 so congrats! 09 Sandebörg // Army Of Lovers - Carry My Urn To Ukraine yes yes yes yes yes. my gosh this is a guilty pleasure and a half *.* i think stanning a Sandebörg entry is becoming a yearly tradition after loving 'Nightclub Nirvana' in 2015, 'Werk Like Beyoncé' in 2016 and now this absolute RIOT in 2017! before we get to the song, can we just appreciate how incredibly unorthodox that title is? i love how much this stands out for being such unadulterated FUN. i adore the accents of all the Army Of Lovers members - which makes me appreciate the delivery of both the verses and the chorus. this has wormed its way into my brain for whatever reason and as a result, there has barely been a moment where 'Carry My Urn To Ukraine' hasn't been stuck in my head this week. we shall "toast magic potion" to Sandebörg no matter where this finishes tonight. so chuffed that this qualified. 10 Persephonia // Life Sim - IDL winner! winner! winner! winner! did we mention that we think this has a strong shot of winning this whole thing? x we're so pleased that our allies have finally unleashed this PC Music gem that they were sitting on for two years! an instant smash if ever i've heard one. PC Music can be a bit hit-and-miss for us but this one really hits the spot with its enthralling build-up! we are a sucker for songs that hit their peak within the last minute or so with a section that is different to what has come before it (see our own song this month too lolz) and IDL really hits a satisfying climax that makes me want to listen to it again right away. a very striking (mostly) instrumental with a cutesy voice reminding us what the title is. remember this title folks as Persephonia shall be crowned the winners of bjsc 100!! here we have a really wide-appealing instrumental with a v. memorable video that manages to illustrate the clichés of Hollywood, but also provides a nostalgic trip through cinematic history that will particularly hit the spot with the film buffs of the site. great stuff. 11 #00274E // OrelSan - Basique we were super excited for this one after Stromae comparisons in the entry showcase stage of the competition, as 'Alors On Danse' is an all-time favourite. thankfully this delivered on my high expectations and then some! we got the Stromae comparison within about 10 seconds with the French delivery and similar production style. my French is pretty rusty now so it wasn't entirely apparent what this was about until i started paying close attention to the video. here we have bold statements about politics and a superb video that illustrates what OrelSan is telling us, even displaying Nazi symbolism. A refrain that mostly comprises of the word 'basique' really works and actually took us back in time to when #00274E sent 'Claque-le', as that has a similarly repetitive but commanding chorus. veryyyyy up our street sonically and really interesting words to go alongside. 12 D'yermak'er // Highasakite - Golden Ticket i like this lmao. i have known 'Golden Ticket' for a couple of years now due to D'yermak'er previously trying to send it but unfortunately getting vetoed. so what a perfect song to use as a 50th anniversary entry! this doesn't quite boast a chorus as obvious as 'Samurai Swords', which packs a punch, but i much prefer this with it's soulful, beautiful and subtle build-up. we hope the "i've got a golden ticket - i'm out" words don't literally ring true and that you don't actually bow out after winning with this! xx although it would be exiting on a high tbh as this is my second favourite D'yermak'er entry after Jessica 6's 'Down Low'. On top of the wonderful vocals, I love the general build up and synth-ridden shimmery production. the video is striking too. top 5 smash please!! TOP 3 13 Espen // Prequell feat. Rae Morris - Part XIV Espen have had a stupendously good year in terms of quality in 2017! they have been no strangers to our points and this includes medal positions, as we awarded ATB our 18 earlier in the year. they're back in the coveted top 3 with this phenomenal offering. we haven't entirely got the hype of Rae Morris in the past, but we're totally on board here with the help of Prequell. my goshhh that instrumental is breathtaking (that kinda mishmash of electronic and classical is something i ALWAYS appreciate!) and she delivers the chorus to perfection with that achey enunciation. it's like the verses slowly build us up and then the chorus gives us absolutely everything at once. this is really special, i hope it can prove to be a smash for Espen tonight. 15 Kluminican Republic // Smile - Butterfly Klum Rep were sooo close to joining our small club of nations that have received more than one 18, but they were sadly pipped during our final listen. Receiving 15 points is still nothing to be sniffed at however! Kluminican Republic are smashing it so much for us lately - this is the THIRD time they've been in our top 2 of the final in 2017! like 'Carry My Urn To Ukraine', this is another huuuge guilty pleasure that never fails to put a smile (lol) on my face! it was a song i knew due to being played on plug.dj a couple of years ago (possibly by Cody?) and because it was interpolated on the iconic top 40 hit 'Enter The Ninja' by Die Antwoord. so we already loved it pre-contest and now we just love it even more! such joyous and cutesy vibes with the silly lyrics and video (that thing in the air totally looks like a fidget spinner #mysticsmile) and the oriental production is a really wonderful layer to it too. we hope this can be a Caramell-esque top 10 guilty pleasure smash! (hopefully sparing you of our 18 means that you won't come 11th at least) 18 Aeroche // TR/ST - Capitol So it is instead Aeroche who join our small club of nations that have received at least 2 18s from us! This follows top marks for 'Angel (Club Mix)' by Polyna in BJSC 84, which went on to be our EOY #1 in 2016.
