Based on a discussion in the Steps thread, which version of 'Better the Devil You Know' do you prefer? The Kylie original or the Steps cover?

Kylie.

I LOVE Steps but feel they were looking for a way to recreate Heartbeat/Tragedy one year on by releasing a faithful cover of a previous big pop hit as part of a Xmas double a-side. And I don't think it hit the same mark as the original, despite the devil horns becoming a mainstay of their image.

To me the production feels a lot more hollow and uninteresting than Kylie's legendary original and it's always come across quite karaoke to me. They pulled off some fantastic covers of huge hits in their time - Tragedy, Chain Reaction - but this one never hit the same mark for me. I much preferred the a-side Say You'll Be Mine, which the band seem to have disowned, having left it off their last three arena tours

There is no contest here, Kylie;s is classic and a big moment of her career. As a huge Steps fan, it is a song they shouldn't have touched as their version is weak and lacks excitement.

I love both, but admittedly I have more of a connection with the Steps version. I heard theirs first, before I'd ever even heard of Kylie! (My introduction to Kylie was with Spinning Around. I don't think I heard Kylie's original of BTDYK until I received this compilation as a gift in 2002!)

I actually find both versions to be similar to each other, Steps version is very faithful to the original (it is to these ears, at least). I wouldn't ever wish they'd not recorded it, because it's always a stand out moment on their tours!

Kylie easily. It's always been one of my least favourite Steps singles (saved by the glorious Say you'll be mine). I do like Steps version though its quite faithful to the original but just hasn't got that oomph some of their other covers did. Love it live though its a real party moment, and of course the devil horns are classic steps
Say You'll Be Fine is one of Steps best tracks that would have done well without the addition of the Kylie cover.

THIS  Really upsets me they don't perform it on shows anymore, it's the only thing that didn't make their show perfect!

It makes sense that Steps would cover this because it's right up their street and I imagine it is a riot when performed live, but it doesn't hold a candle to Kylie's original. I agree with Gooddelta that the production isn't right and isn't really made their own, whereas covers like 'Tragedy' and 'Chain Reaction' are fantastic and have often been considered better than the originals or even more associated with Steps than the original artists.

Kylie's 'Better the Devil You Know' is one of the very best in her discography. Will never tire of it!

I'd say so! Obviously the Diana Ross version is a classic, as is the Bee Gees' version of 'Tragedy' but, as far as covers of popular songs go, I'd say they were quite well associated with Steps.

I agree too that the production isn’t right on BTDYK but I don’t like their cover of chain reaction neither but tragedy is a fantastic cover version! I think chain reaction suffers in the same way as BTDYK in terms of issues with the production!

Chain Reaction associated with Steps? Stop trippin'

Trickly one. Obviously Diana's version by far the most iconic and respected, but I generally tend to hear the Steps version in gay bars and stuff and never Diana's (not necessarily saying that's the way it should be, but as I've grown up since being a teenager that has been the case).

Despite liking the eurodance production on the steps version I voted for Kylie's version as I prefer the vocal.
