There are plenty of what I think of as classic Xmas songs that I'm surprised don't chart higher, for instance:

I Believe in Father Christmas

Christmas Wrapping (Or is it Rapping?)

 

Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses peaked at 45 in 1982

 

Christmas Rappin' by Kurtis Blow peaked at 30 in 1979-80 (and was the first rap single on a major label, fact fans)

The lyrics aren't bad at all - I understand the screeching comment because of Sias voice.

Having enjoyed the last three Sia albums, I have found a lot of the lyrics too corny for my tastes with the Christmas album. Still enjoying Santa’s Coming For Us, Snowflake, Snowman and Sunshine though.

 

With streaming playlists making such a big difference these days it is opening the charts up to different songs each year. Didn’t notice any real interest in Buble’s holly jolly Christmas in previous years, yet it has done well in 2017 due to being on the right playlists.

 

No reason to say the same might not happen for some of the Sia and Gwen tracks (though the only tracks on hers I care about are last Christmas and you make it feel like Christmas)

Yes it was. I remember having the CD single for that. I’d love for the original to enter the top 40 one year. Saying that, I would also love for Run-DMC - “Christmas In Hollis” to enter the top 40 at Xmas one year too

Last Christmas is great, but I'm surprised December Song (I Dreamed of Christmas) hasn't taken off. For me, it has the edge, and a lovely video too

Is Fairytale Of New York starting to dwindle a little with the public, a few years ago it won itv best christmas song and seemed to be a firm favourite this year on the 30th anniversary it seems to have dropped to no.3 behind Wham!

 

On a music channel countdown of public vote this year it was only voted No.9.

 

I have seen people moaning more about it on forums than I have done before and it just seems to generally not spoken about much this year, with a lot of the other Christmas songs reaching new peaks and Mariah almost getting to No.1 on the OCC chart and Wham! doing well on i-tunes has Fairytale just been more overlooked more this year.?

 

 

Wham obviously gained a lot from the loss of George Michael this year. As for the Pogues, I don’t think it features highly on a lot of streaming playlists but I could be wrong.

Fairytale of New York has always done less well than AIWFCIY on Spotify hasn't it? On downloads both songs seem to be doing similarly to usual. Wham! are doing better than usual for obvious reasons but FONY doesn't seem any less popular to me. It's still doing the best it's done in a long time like most of the Xmas songs!

And its been top 5 all week on Spotify

It's top 20 combined on iTunes, only a few spots behind Mariah...

Perhaps the further into the future we go, the less popular we'll find the tracks that sound more and more dated each year. Slade and Wizzard seem to now be being overtaken by others, for example.

Its overplay as well imo. Pogues and Mariah have been constantly played for 20 years now. Doesn't mean they are less popular tho!
