I feel like meme songs becoming big hits are the new equivalent of how novelty songs would be big hits in the past.

 

I think 'Freaky Friday' is more a 'novelty song' than a 'meme song' tbh (the latter would be more like 'Black Beatles' or 'Harlem Shake', a song intended to be serious but that only became popular because of an unrelated meme).
