Even I don't like that Kodak Black song oops (Travis' part is decent but the rest nah). Why is he stealing 6ix9ine's future song titles xx

May have been a bit hasty saying LM will have done enough for #1, especially as they're off #1 on iTunes already. Still a pretty good start for them though.

It really is a poor start for Little Mix considering how big their fanbase is... really is telling that Dave can debut higher than them now with less hype.

I don't think a #5 debut is poor for anybody, it's actually very good! Particularly as Little Mix don't generally appeal to the Spotify demographic quite as much (almost all of their singles have performed less well on Spotify than on iTunes). Dave simply fits the demographic better - Funky Friday came out of the blue in a way very similar to Post Malone's rockstar, the latest single following a slow-burning smash. They aren't really comparable but Dave is much more suited to the Spotify audience than Little Mix really.

I dunno their last era was pretty Spotify friendly definitely touch and power

Very few songs debut at number 1 anymore so a top 10 debut would still be a fantastic result

Yeah, but tbf that doesn’t mean much when download sales are so low. Every LM single from Glory Days has the vast majority of its sales from streaming and SOTME, Touch and Power were big streaming hits. It’s not a bad start at all for WLM but I think they’d have expected more definitely. Watch me be proved wrong when it goes to #1 with a 300k lead x

I don't think the level of download sales actually matters much here - obviously most songs have more sales from streams than downloads these days, I think it goes without saying! However, even if sales were higher, their peaks on the sales-only chart wouldn't be different and it's worth nothing the differences. Notably, No More Sad Songs peaked at #7 on sales but only #23 on streams! Only You was #3 on sales and #22 on streams. A smaller difference but Reggaetón Lento got to #2 on sales, while only #7 on streams. They certainly aren't streaming flops, but their sales chart runs are notably more impressive than their streaming chart runs.

Maybe Little Mix are not the force that they once were a few years ago and are has beens now?

 sure, jan.

They're doing great. Like Joseph said (apart from SOTME which had a unique release strategy) they've never been instant hitters on Spotify/streaming. They're doing not only good for themselves, but great for a pop act of their ilk in general.

The video hasn't even premiered yet. Airplay is yet to properly get going amd I'm confident it's streaming numbers are yet to hit it's peak.

pop songs do well on Spotify but always in the long term, it's nearly impossible for a pop song to start at >500k unless you're ed sheeran, while many urban acts can do it with relative ease, pop songs depend much more on playlist placing

one solution would be if HH placed songs at #1 from release date, well thats why they did with Taylor and Sam smith and it worked, basically they bought themselves the #1 ;)

but at least the UK is not as bad as the US, many times the Spotify top 20 is all 100% urban with zero pop or dance tracks

I am sensing a turn in the US too though, Shallow reached top 20 there with relative "ease" (without any airplay that is) and also Marshmello, Benny Blanco, Halsey and Ariana Grande are top 20 staples. It's just the top 5 that's very difficult to pop acts at the moment.

Urban tracks seem to debut with very high numbers but might never beat the first day.

don't think it has either

cos the big US airplay hits are pop hits and the ones doing well on Spotify are urban, right now this Kodak Black and Lil Baby

also in the US, airplay is even slower than in the UK, airplay and streaming hardly ever synchronise cos Spotify is very fast and airplay very slow

I would not say airplay has no effect on streaming at all? It doesn't have the kind of instant iTunes-like boosts but I'd say it was a contributing factor in what does well.
not sure, look at Olly for instance

His song just isn't that popular I don't think. Not every song with airplay benefits on iTunes either.

Is there any tangible evidence though?

I've seen loads of tracks that have got heavy commercial airplay, done really well on iTunes but can't even dent the Spotify top 200 without any playlisting on there.

maybe the new Olly sucks, I agree, but You don't know love, for instance, that was huge on airplay and iTunes but did nothing on Spotify

same with Paloma and Crybaby
