Well it was to be expected and I think most other stores will also close by the end of this week or be forced to close.
I’ve spent over £100 in the online HMV sale - they are a brand that deserve protecting, I’m hoping others have started to use them too seeing as Amazon are not treating entertainment as a priority atm.

My local opening!

Doubt I’ll be going any time soon though, I don’t think I’m personally ready for that but I’ve done well off the website during lockdown!

Great - Belfast store opened, 10:30 - 16:30h.

HMV's flagship Oxford Street store to reopen

The original central London HMV store is to reopen later this year after a four-year absence.

The century-old music shop chain shut its flagship store in 2019 after going into administration. It was then taken over by Sunrise Records.

It said the return to 363 Oxford Street was due to a "dramatic turnaround", with HMV returning to profit in 2022.

The store will have different branding and a new layout.

The store, which first opened in 1921, became a world-famous presence on London's busiest shopping street, hosting some of the biggest acts in the music business, such as the Spice Girls.

In recent years, the retailer has broadened its focus to include merchandise, music technology, more live music and in-store signings, amid falling demand for DVDs and CDs.

HMV said it would bring the new format, called HMV Shop, to 24 new sites and 14 existing stores by the end of 2023.

Doug Putnam, Sunrise Records' owner, said the "new concept" stores were "really working".

He added new stores would also open in Europe in 2023, which would be a "launchpad for an exciting new era for HMV".

Councillor Geoff Barraclough, Westminster City Council's cabinet member for planning and economic development, said: "The return of this famous name is proof that there's a buzz back in the West End."

Several large shops on Oxford street have closed in recent years, including Debenhams, BHS and Top Shop.

So excited by this news - we only have 1 HMV in London at Westfield and a Fopp in Covent Garden so to finally be getting the flagship back is immense, will be going out of my way to support it even if they are more expensive than Amazon etc., as I’ve missed having a huge music store in central (although we are blessed by the magnitude of indie stores).
Brilliant news, Oxford Street really needs a complete overhaul, with all those dodgy American Candy shops, and having HMV there will encourage me to go again.

HMV yeeting the candy shop out of its rightful place *.* (so weird to walk down Oxford Street now and see all of those candy shops)

For someone who goes shopping in London every now and then, HMV was the only thing really pulling me to Oxford Street so I'm delighted it's coming back and a definite indicator that HMV are doing well. They've positioned themselves really well with memorabilia, pop culture and funko pops etc as well as the DVDs and CDs. The one near me in Staines recently moved and was closed for months in the interim, the new store looks SO nice with the new branding.

or to give the candy shops their proper name, money laundering operations :magic:

glad HMV seems to still be on its legs anyhow (not that I ever shop there, mind)

I’m happy! Only got to visit it once in December 2018 (bought Mariah’s Caution and Madonna’s Ray of Light on vinyl ), glad I’ll get to see it again

Love to see their return to glory and it all feels very well planned - getting the UK back to profit before venturing elsewhere
