Yess, mines still there.

Not surprised at Oxford Street going, it’s often been labelled as unprofitable - even when they last went into administration. I think it remained for prestigious purposes.

Last time they moved it to a smaller shop though

Pleased it's been saved. Wonder how long it will take the new releases and releases of the last few weeks to start arriving again.

Glad Bromley has been saved as I live 15 minutes walk from it, but sad to see Oxford Street closing. Makes sense though if it's unprofitable. And Fopp isn't too far away I suppose.

Odd Oxford street isn't having a closing down sale I guess all stock will be sent to other stores or a warehouse.

I wonder what the plan is though, I mean how will they make it profitable? I know losing the 27 biggest liability stores will help but if that was the answer the previous owners would have just done that surely.

These are the locations HMV is closing with immediate effect:

Ayr

Bath

Bluewater

Bristol Cribbs

Chichester

Exeter Princesshay

FOPP Bristol

FOPP Glasgow Byres

FOPP Manchester

FOPP Oxford

Glasgow Braehead

Guernsey

Hereford

Manchester Trafford

Merry Hill

Oxford Street

Peterborough Queensgate

Plymouth Drake Circus

Reading

Sheffield Meadowhall

Southport

Thurrock

Tunbridge Wells

Uxbridge

Watford

Westfield London

Wimbledon

A shame about FOPP in Manchester but not surprising, had a lovely independent feel about it :(

Happy that Arndale has survived!

At least the ones in Birmingham Bullring, Shrewsbury and Telford aren’t closing as they’re my nearest ones

They guy buying HMV has made a success of the Canadian stores he purchased from them but I wonder how it will work in the UK? Majority of London stores have gone presumably to high rents - the OS store used to generate a lot of money from labels wanting to do album launches there plus they paid for advertising on the front of the store, doesn’t quite have the same appeal launching an album in HMV Scunthorpe :P

Apart from online with all my nearest London stores closing I can’t support them even if I wanted too now - having worked for HMV previously I’ve always been a big supporter and spender with them but until if/when they get a London presence again I can’t.

Relieved to see Chelmsford and Colchester are safe. Oxford Street I'm sad to see go though, I met Olly Murs there twice for the 'Never Been Better' launches of the original and special edition releases so I have fond memories of that place. Likewise the Westfield branch when I met him there for the launch of '24 HRS'.

I've never been to FOPP before, but a lot of people have said it's good. Is their product range substantially different from that of HMV?

did Fopp Covent Garden shut down as well??

and when is HMV Oxford closing down?

No, Fopp Covent Garden is safe. They, and the Kingston and Bromley branches of HMV are the only London ones left now.

Hilco weren't interested in HMV's long-term prospects. They just wanted to make some quick money.

All my local ones have survived :cheer:. Great news, the only closure I'm really bothered about is the Bristol FOPP.

I believe the Oxford Street branch was closed immediately :(

As others have said, the rent would have been a major issue. I suspect the rent on the Oxford Street premises wouldn't have been terribly different from the amount Amazon pay for a massive warehouse in an out-of-town location.

Thank god Chester is still there. Will go this weekend to celebrate.

Nice to see the Cardiff one will still be there when I visit at the end of this month.

I think they will start selling more vhnyl to get more profit, the only physical format where sales are on the rise.

It says in the news that they will be increasing their vinyl stock.

Absolutely gutted mine’s closing (Peterborough) :( It’s such a huge shop as well so I do wonder what will replace it! It was previously Zavvi/Virgin so it’s always had an entertainment shop of some sort there.
