July 1, 20204 yr I've had a listen to this album today and, honestly, I felt bored halfway through. :( I loved their debut album but I think they're just not for me anymore.
July 2, 20204 yr Have just given this album a listen now - I think the best, or at least most instant, songs are largely the ones that were already released so major highlights from the album tracks are a little thin on the ground but it's still an enjoyable listen overall (Jessie Ware definitely has the better of the two big albums released this week though). Having said that I do get the sense that most of the songs on here would probably be growers, this was my second listen of 'Gasoline' as I already gave it one listen when voting in WhoOdyssey's Track of the Week poll the other day and it's already sounded quite a bit better on second listen, would rank that as one of the main highlights of the album tracks alongside 'Los Angeles' and 'Leaning On You' on first listen. Even 'The Steps' is finally growing on me a little more now too. I will make sure to give the album another full listenthrough and hopefully that'll help at least another couple of songs to click with me more ~ The main disappointment here for me is that 'I Know Alone' ended up being quite an outlier sonically as that was and still is my favourite song on the album - appreciating the diversity of styles from track to track throughout this but I hoped they'd have at least one other song further exploring the garage / electronic tinged sound of that song! Also, much like the Jessie Ware album, found that the last few songs (excluding the bonus tracks obviously) kind of dipped into inessential / forgettable territory, I've only just finished the album and I don't really remember any distinct qualities about any of tracks 10-13 oops (I think one of them had a pretty good guitar part towards the end but I've forgotten which song it was!! 'All That Ever Mattered' I think?)
July 2, 20204 yr I just can't get into this unfortunately. Still I hope they claim that #1 album tomorrow! The girls deserve it and I love I've Been Down.
July 3, 20204 yr Stick with it all Bré! I've found myself listening to this every day this week and I love everything on it now, it's definitely my favourite of theirs to date. It helps that I really enjoy Sheryl Crow and Joni Mitchell etc so the sound is quite up my street.
July 3, 20204 yr haha a friend of mine was telling me the same, that I like the Haim album cos I like Sheryl Crow :D
September 14, 20204 yr 'Up from a Dream' has become a recent favourite of mine, and I think the album has to be one of the best of the year. All killer, no filler. Edited September 14, 20204 yr by blacksquare
October 7, 20204 yr I'm a little late as I'm finally catching up with 2020 albums I should've listened to earlier - I agree that this is easily their best album, it's so diverse and there's so little filler on there, I said it earlier (much earlier lol) but this was the artistic progression I really wanted from them that they didn't quite achieve last era. I particularly love their lyrics and how they really exemplify what life is like for women in the industry and in life (that song above lyrically is definitely one of the best, those scenarios really do speak volumes). I do wish all the singles weren't just tacked on as bonus tracks though, they're all still wonderful.
October 18, 20204 yr The video for 'Man From The Magazine' has definitely helped the song click with me a lot more, a powerful visual/concept (I didn't even remember if the song was one I liked when I first heard the album as most of the album tracks blur into one in my memory but looking back at my post here I see it was one of the songs that I said had no distinct memorable qualities to it :kink:) - I never did get around to relistening to this album but maybe I finally will one of these days...
October 18, 20204 yr Man From the Magazine is great, it's very much like a Joni Mitchell tribute but I think they really pull it off. This album remains one of my favourites of the year, I've already listened to it waaayyyy more often than any of their others.
October 21, 20204 yr Yeh I give it a spin at least once a week since July and it’s pretty decent although sone of it does pass me by!
October 23, 20204 yr I miss the effortless and timelessly breezy joys of their early singles but I do like some of this album. Nothing gets me massively in the feels though. Although also big fan of "but you don't know how it feels to be the (REDACTED)". Didn't see that coming! What's with people relegating most or all the singles that whet our appetites to 'bonus tracks'? The albums should be built around them surely. I do admire the whole "indie-rock En Vogue" vibe I get from them especially on this album even though I keep forgetting what the album tracks go like. Edited October 24, 20204 yr by HiyaWeen
February 4, 20214 yr Author Rumours going around that a remix of Gasoline will be released featuring Taylor Swift :cheeseblock:
February 4, 20214 yr Re-issue of the album out February 19, including the aforementioned new version of "Gasoline" featuring Taylor Swift and "3am" featuring Thundercat.
February 4, 20214 yr When is the single out? Could be great if they managed to get a belated hit for this album
February 4, 20214 yr I hope Taylor is just a background vocalist as payback for how little HAIM actually appeared in 'no body, no crime' :basil: Seriously though that's cool of Taylor to pay back the favour and 'Gasoline' was one of my favourite album tracks.
