September 30, 20195 yr If the vocal is putting anyone off, someone's done a cover with a more 'palatable' vocal which I found on Spotify (although I must say I prefer the original). SLi1AYCJh-U
September 30, 20195 yr How I feel about this song changes with each play. It's well-written, very catchy and the production's brilliant. Her voice is offputting though, mainly because it just sounds SO forced. Some days I can tolerate it more than others
September 30, 20195 yr amazed people hate it so much, we've had plenty of awful singers with more irritating singing voices in the charts, Jessie J, James Blunt, Mika, Duffy... Yeah of anyone I would compare Tones and I's voice to Duffy's, and I didn't mind Duffy's voice.... Prediction: I think Tones and I's follow up to Dance Money will be more middle of the road pop and she will probably tone down the affectation in her voice a bit for that one. Kelly/Ozzy - Changes may finally have some competition as worst UK #1 ever x Well i thought Changes was decent enough, my only criticism is that it was a little bit boring by Ozzy Osborne standards. September 30, 20195 yr Her vocals do make the track stand out, but they're not ridiculous or forced imo? There's only bits here and there which are a bit... interesting, but they add to the charm of the track! Sia and Jessie J have been much worse in the past.
September 30, 20195 yr Would she be the first solo Australian female artist to have a UK #1 since Kylie Minogue barring collaborations?
October 1, 20195 yr Her vocals do make the track stand out, but they're not ridiculous or forced imo? There's only bits here and there which are a bit... interesting, but they add to the charm of the track! Sia and Jessie J have been much worse in the past. It has the 'charm' of a laughably bad X Factor audition that's funny for like a minute, but then for some reason people are taking it seriously. I've just relistened to 'Johnny Run Away' because I'm sure I did not remember her voice sounding anywhere near as awful on that song and while... it sounds worse than I remember, it still doesn't sound anywhere near as forced or unnatural as 'Dance Monkey'. It's like she got some praise for the slightly quirky vocal style on that song and decided to make it her entire schtick by playing it way way way overboard. If this can be a legitimate hit then I demand this be one as well because it legitimately falls into the same category in my mind: iq_d8VSM0nw Would she be the first solo Australian female artist to have a UK #1 since Kylie Minogue barring collaborations? The fact that she's getting a #1 with this when Sia never had one (other than a feature) is kind of depressing. Not that Sia is entirely free from sin on the 'how do people listen to these vocals' front. Looking at 'Alive' here. But I think this is worse than even that x (whether it's worse than Jessie J's 'Who You Are' is debatable)
October 1, 20195 yr Please god do not let this be a Chez Wombat fave or I think this song has out-Twilight-Zoned 'Let It Go' xx
October 2, 20195 yr This has tied for the longest running female #1 by a solo Aussie artist in Australia, with Kylie's Locomotion. What's also frustrating is the fact that tonnes of Australian artists like say Jess Mauboy or Samantha Jade have been struggling for support and with getting hits in their homeland, yet here this crock of shite is getting #1 all over the shop :drama: Not bitter, I promise x I can't see how people like it anyway but I'm absolutely BAFFLED by it somehow being so appealing it's gone #1 in so many countries including almost certainly the UK soon. There's songs such as Happy, Uptown Funk and Where Is The Love I personally can't abide that went #1, but I think this has to be the one where I'm most baffled by it going #1 because I just don't know how on earth it's appealed on such a large scale with vocals like that. Like... yes it's catchy enough as a song by itself but so are so many other songs that go totally unnoticed.
October 2, 20195 yr I quite like it! I'm surprised to see SO much hate, she doesn't sound too much different from Sia in her tone imo. It's not the best voice in the world but it's not going to put me off and it's nice to have something different at the top doing well!
October 2, 20195 yr Well I would suggest the affectations are because she is somewhat deliberately attempting to mimic a monkey. It's a long shot I know but the "ooh ah" parts make sense. It's not even that OTT imo. More obvious in the verses but barely at all in the chorus.
October 2, 20195 yr Please god do not let this be a Chez Wombat fave or I think this song has out-Twilight-Zoned 'Let It Go' xx You can read me very well... http://m.quickmeme.com/img/6d/6dd502755af9e008f7c7963d245fdc7d0e062fdcd211f0faa93f0fe28567411d.jpg I must admit I wasn't entirely sure at first, but second listen, yep I can get down to this *. an acquired taste for sure and I'm not sure how well it will hold up, but it's just so distinctive that I have to support this, and it's a damn sight more interesting than pretty much every other UK number 1 this year.
October 2, 20195 yr Also what is this 'surprised to see so much hate' when it's literally like 5 of us fighting against the bizarrely overpowering love for it. xxx
October 2, 20195 yr Author Also what is this 'surprised to see so much hate' when it's literally like 5 of us fighting against the bizarrely overpowering love for it. xxx Because you’re the only 5 people hating on it x
October 2, 20195 yr It's not the monkey affectations for me, it's the fact that her voice sounds so paper thin and like it's about to crack on like EVERY note, she reminds me of Alma more than Sia because Sia has the power and emotion behind her voice whereas Tones and I just sounds like a baby babbling nonsense
October 4, 20195 yr Ok, somehow I hadn’t heard this at all until yesterday... and I’m really liking it on first listen! I don’t find her vocals to be offensive sounding? Quirky for sure, but I think that quality positively adds to what is a thoroughly catchy song. I’m not surprised it’s heading for #1 (even though I’ve somehow been living under a rock regarding it!)
October 4, 20195 yr Well I would suggest the affectations are because she is somewhat deliberately attempting to mimic a monkey. It's a long shot I know but the "ooh ah" parts make sense. That's actually why I like it haha, intentional or not!
