The Troye/Ariana track is the biggest mystery to me, having Ariana on board and still totally flopping

and it's a great song, best in the top 10 so far

04. FISHER ~ Losing It

Year charted: 2019

Official chart peak: #60

Sales chart peak: #33

Points scored in final: 186

Group position: 1st

Points scored in group: 114

Fisher's breakthrough single became one of the biggest dance songs of recent times, being a huge club hit in 2018 and eventually crossing over to the lower reaches of the chart as well as getting R1 playlisted, though unfortunately that wasn't enough for it to go top 40.

03. The Chemical Brothers ~ Go

Year charted: 2015

Official chart peak: #46

Sales chart peak: #32

Points scored in final: 197

Group position: 1st

Points scored in group: 127

'Go' saw The Chemical Brothers and Q-Tip back together after the brilliant 'Galvanize' from 10 years earlier, giving them their first chart hit in many years (and probably their last ever given how uncommercial their new material is) but just missing the top 40.

It's between Arcade Fire and Duke Dumont for the #1 spot then, all will be revealed just before 6pm as we soon head over to the First Look chart.

the Christine & The Queens track is ok-ish, not a patch on Tilted or the better tracks of her debut

the Rihanna track is nice enough

02. Arcade Fire ~ Everything Now

Year charted: 2017

Official chart peak: #50

Sales chart peak: #24

Points scored in final: 214

Group position: 1st

Points scored in group: 131

'Everything Now' saw Arcade Fire get an unlikely hit in the streaming era, doing very well to reach #50 but it really deserved even better, being their best song by some distance for me anyway.

01. Duke Dumont ~ Ocean Drive

Year charted: 2015

Official chart peak: #42

Sales chart peak: #27

Points scored in final: 245

Group position: 1st

Points scored in group: 134

Which leaves 'Ocean Drive' as your favourite 'casualty of streaming'! The song gave Duke Dumont his biggest hit across Europe but was very unlucky to underperform in his home country. Not my fave song of his actually but it definitely deserved a bigger peak, a great winner anyhow!

Thank God the top 2 is amazing.

Also liked Losing It in the top 10, but I could change all the rest of the top 10 tbh.

Aww at Kygo 'winning' that shameful position. :(

Also gutted to see Purple Disco Machine just missing out on top 40 thanks to break-tie criteria. :(

Thanks for doing this Dan, much apprecisted! :D

haha until the very end I thought Lana - Love was gonna be #1 :D :D :D

not crazy about the results tbh quite disappointing

only really like Troye/Ariana in that top 10

Yeah the way the votes were going I thought Ocean Drive was going to take this. It had one of the longer runs in the top 100 of the songs here so it's a worthy winner.

Fun Fact: The old man in the Listen To The Man music video was played by Ian McKellen (who also played the role of a vampire in the music video to the Pet Shop Boys' Heart)

I love the idea of the top 40! A solid top 5 (pleased/somewhat surprised to see Losing It so high here) but I love all of #6-#10 (omg Carly not winning with a ROTD winner track :o ). Happy to see high placings for Baby (I'd never realised how stark the sales peak vs. official peak was, deserved better tbh), Half the World Away, Loud Places, +1, Stay, Hope There's Someone, Lost on You (! that this never officially charted), Gold, Heartbeat Loud, All for You, Best Behaviour and The Way among others  Didn't expect Lana to miss top 40 with both songs & poor Rollin placing last :P

Thanks Dan for this game, a fantastic idea (particularly love seeing the sales peaks which I'd never looked into myself)

40. Flume feat. Tove Lo ~ Say It

Flume briefly made the sales chart with 'Say It' thanks to the release of a Clean Bandit remix, although the original sold better in the long-term. It still remains his highest charting song to date as both it and 'Never Be Like You' were truly robbed of being hit singles despite R1 support.

Ah that's why! I always remember its international success for the massively long time it spent in the 50s on global Spotify, never managing to get across the line back when the top 50 effect was very significant: 101-100-101-121-121-71-58-55-56-53-55-52-52-52-54-55-55-55-56-55-56-57-57-58-60-64-64-67-82-134-155-193-196. Yep, the dramatic fall was when it was removed from Today's Top Hits (on which track 1 was, that day, "Barack Obama - Today's Top Hits Intro From The President"), killing it in pretty much every country except Australia & NZ. Coincidentally, that's right around when it got its week in the UK chart.

37. Ferreck Dawn & Redondo ~ Love Too Deep

Year charted: 2014

I totally forgot this was from 2014! I think it was one of those songs I heard of but never heard at the time, and when listening to it for this game, Spotify said it was from 2016 and I believed it.

35. Just Us ~ Cloudbusting

30. Andy C & Fiora ~ Heartbeat Loud

29. Kiiara ~ Gold

Great to see these make the top 40

23. Antony & The Johnsons ~ Hope There's Someone

This song, which was also covered on Avicii's debut album 'True', was briefly brought back to the chart following a performance by The Voice contestants, having peaked at #44 upon its original release.

Thank you! I had no idea what this was doing having charted since 2014. Didn't know it charted originally either, I think I'd only heard of it from being one of Pitchfork's year-end #1s.

22. Henry Krinkle ~ Stay
I always remember that, the one time #41 was worth playing, I missed it :(

Finally an interesting #41 and I was too late  But yay Henry Krinkle, such a great song.
Glad it finally made the top 40 in something :cheer:

20. Martin Solveig feat. Sam White ~ « +1 »
Their bid to get votes paid off :basil:

17. CHVRCHES ~ Get Away

Serving as the comeback for CHVRCHES for their second era, streaming wasn't kind to them especially for the time (29-52 being one of the biggest drops for 2014). They finally got a proper hit this year however by collabing with Marshmello.

I think this was just for the 'Drive' soundtrack? Not the original one 'Nightcall' and 'A Real Hero' came from of course but some 2014 rework. Ouch at it charting 50+ spots higher than everything from their 2nd album though.

Sigma still had hits in 2016 (Cry and Find Me), I think those are the last DnB hits (if Find Me even counts as DnB).
that Take That collab possibly being the last D&B top 40 hit is the most cursed statistic possible (oh coi already said basically the same thing )

11. Vampire Weekend ~ This Life
Wow this almost making the top 10! :o

...and I'm gonna slide into a new post because I maxed out the allowed number of quotes lmao

08. Carly Rae Jepsen ~ Run Away With Me
Now this not being near #1 is a surprise, maybe fatigue from winning everything?

06. The Avener & Phoebe Killdeer ~ Fade Out Lines
!!!!!! I just, as I saw 'Run Away With Me', remembered 'Fade Out Lines' was still in the running and was shocked it was so high... and then realised it had probably missed out. Or not! :o My +25, a true classic for me. I remember it and 'I'm An Albatraoz' feeling like big 'lost hits' in terms of the UK at the time, in that they were big in Europe (and even both made the top 10 in Australia!) but seemed to be going nowhere and getting little to no radio support in the UK ahead of their long-delayed releases. I recall 'Fade Out Lines' having a really chopped-up UK radio edit like 'Jubel' too. Though I completely forgot 'I'm An Albatraoz' actually did eventually reach #25 until checking just now.

05. The 1975 ~ Somebody Else
It tends to feel like this underperforms in ROTD to me, so it's great to see it top 5 here  I think of it as their definitive/most popular song, whether or not that's actually the case (it does have their highest Spotify plays). My favourite of theirs, up there with 'Sex' and 'Give Yourself A Try'.

03. The Chemical Brothers ~ Go
I did not see this being so high! :o

01. Duke Dumont ~ Ocean Drive
!! Wow, an excellent result - my 2nd favourite behind 'Fade Out Lines', and my favourite song of his. Right after making the ROTD AQ section too! 'Ocean Drive' is coming... for something. I love how its slow-burning success, particularly in eastern Europe I think (?) as well as Australia, turned it into possibly his biggest hit overall (it's his biggest on Spotify and YouTube, approaching 500 million views on the latter).

41 91 Purple Disco Machine ~ Dished (Male Stripper)

43 88 John Gibbons & Franklin feat. Nina Nesbitt ~ A Spaceman Came Travelling

Poor them just missing the top 40, but I'm very glad to see 'A Spaceman Came Travelling' narrowly beat 'P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)'. Wouldn't have expected Kylie to miss the top 40! Particularly as I recall her leading in the poll stage did we get AF Idol-inspired single-artist voters?... and 'Side Effects' too for that matter. Also thought some of the older songs ('Changes', 'Tiny Dancer') would've done better since they seemed to do very well in the earlier rounds, not that I really mind because I felt like few of the old ones in the game were ones I cared for. I like how the list was curated well enough that every song got at least 40 points.

Thanks for running this, a very creative idea and I enjoyed reading the countdown.

PERFECT winner *.* also pleasantly surprised to see 'Go' and 'Dance To This' so high. On the contrary, I can't quite believe that Carly is only #8 with 'Run Away With Me' :o if I had to name songs that are huge BuzzJack favourites then that'd be one of them. Wow, perhaps fatigue indeed as Rush suggested.

Thanks for this!

Even Ariana at her peak couldn't give Troye Sivan a hit with this surprisingly falling well short of the top 40, though in this contest it easily out-performs the rest of Ariana's entries.

But funnily Lauv could :D

Seriously though Dance to This should've been big, but was never really pushed (from what I can remember). Didn't it come not long after Bloom - which was pushed more, but didn't do anything. Still it went top 10 on i-tunes... shame it was never pushed by radio/ on Spotify.

Actually a very good Top 2! Buzzjack showing taste for once *.*

Disappointed at Viola Beach being so low down the rankings as it's a great song but I guess it was lucky to make the final.

Ended up with a fine top 3 there I think, especially surprised/happy for Chem Bros/Q-Tip to get so high

Thanks for running this DanG over the last few weeks!
