I know that Boris voted against May's deal but he's come up with a perfectly good plan now and Varadkar has put the kibosh on it. Am sure if he'd agreed the rest of the EU would. Doubt Varadkar will be very popular with Boris from now on.

I'm sure the man that is performing what is clearly in his country's own interests will be gutted he's no longer in favour from a man that is doing anything but that right now.

I just hope most people don't see this bullshit that the tabloids will inevitably push and think 'aww he tried, it's THEM who are being unreasonable!11' and that leads to a majority...

I hope Boris gets a thumping great overall majority.

The ignorance of Brexit supporters is mind-numbing. Bonnie Greer's statements on the BBC last night is what the Irish government (and the EU) have been saying for years. Ireland does not need to compromise. After all these years do you really think Ireland is going to turn around and do the UK government a favour? Brexit is the UK's problem and it's not up to Ireland to fix. Despite Trump's support for Boris, the UK are very much on their own in this mess and Boris will be hard pushed to find any type of substantial trade deal with the US if there's No Deal. Pelosi will not let that happen. The GFA is a legally binding international treaty lodged with the United Nations and cannot just be rewritten or disregarded by the UK, a co-signatory. The people on the island of Ireland know what the GFA means and voted for it overwhelmingly (71% in NI and 94%(!) in the Republic).

Arlene Foster and the DUP need to be flushed and should not hold so much power when they're not even in power in the North. Let's not forget the DUP voted AGAINST the GFA so they're talking pure shite when they say they don't want a hard border. The vast majority of people in the North want to stay in the EU and/or the Customs Union. The latter is easily achievable and needs to be the way this is dealt with. If NI is dragged out of the EU by the DUP and the Conservatives with a hard border then Reunification will be sooner rather than later. Add that with Scotland about to leave and all that's left is England and, at a push, Wales. You know it's an absolute mess when Wales are like "wait, what???".

I hope Boris gets a thumping great overall majority.

You'll be back in work this time next year if he does.

Very very unlikely. I think the next election which will probably be later this year, will be very interesting. No-one can predict the result. If Labour and Lib-Dem joined forces and agreed not to oppose each other in certain constituencies they could beat some big Tory names such as IDS and Theresa Villiers. Labour could surprise many and get a small majority or so could the Tories. The national polls are all over the place, and as has been said tonight on DS, don't reflect local pictures. Brexit may poll well but get no seats. Can't see them getting a single seat myself.

Unless there is an election called pretty shortly I can't see their being one until 2020. It's what - 6 weeks of planning and we're coming up to winter. Have we ever had a winter election? We'd probably see the lowest voting turnout ever.

Lib Dems and Labour will oppose each other right now. I think if any tactical voting happens it's more likely to be Greens, Change, Lib Dems making a pact.

The most recent equivalent was in October 1974. The earliest date for an election is now mid-November. My suspicion is now that will probably not have an election this year.

I agree, I think if we have an election it will be late February/March at the earliest. I can't see either of the main parties wanting it before unless they are mad. Imagine if we have a VoNC then any temporary government would just be that for 6 months.

What does Boris have to do to lose your support?

ISTM it's not so much who is the leader of the Tories, but Labour. As long as Corbyn's around, *whoever* loads the Tories is likely to be seen as the lesser of two evils.

How can anyone be more evil than Boris?

Propaganda's really done a number on some in this country.

Corbyn is never the greater of two evils, he doesn't threaten people's lives, he is astonishingly principled (unlike our dear de Pfeffel, who says whatever gains him power) and he's always been on the side of the worker. On economy, the Tories are right now crashing the pound, so any 'we will become Venezuela' talk just doesn't fly. And while I am in principle a revocateur, if he gets the power to do it (which I think he hasn't done very well but IF he's in), then his strategy to sort out Brexit is sensible and far more statesmanlike than the current clownery Johnson is trying on.

and let's be honest, the minute he goes, every shill of the right-wing will just say the same about whoever else is Labour leader.

Brexit may poll well but get no seats. Can't see them getting a single seat myself.

The Brexit Party came within 683 votes of taking Peterborough in June, they could very easily pick up a few seats if their support holds through a GE.

I thought Labour were going to table a motion of no confidence as soon as Boris sends the extension letter though, meaning a late Nov/Dec election?

Yes, there was a December GE in 1923! It was the first ever Labour government (propped up by the Liberals). :D
